Choosing the right transportation can save both time and money when exploring Aomori in summer.

For long-distance travel, the JR East Pass is one of the best options. It offers five consecutive days of unlimited travel on JR trains and Shinkansen services, and often pays for itself with a single round trip between Tokyo and Aomori.

For local sightseeing, renting a car is highly recommended. While cities like Aomori City, Hirosaki, and Hachinohe are easy to reach by train, scenic spots such as Lake Towada, Moya Hills, and Mount Osore are much easier to access by car.

A practical strategy is to use the JR East Pass to reach Shin-Aomori Station or Hachinohe Station, then pick up a rental car for exploring the region's countryside.

Inakadate’s famous rice paddy art remains on display through the first half of October, with September bringing a different look as the rice begins taking on its richer late season colors. The enormous pictures are created entirely from varieties of rice with naturally different colors, planted so that the complete designs emerge when viewed from the observation decks above.

The two viewing sites feature separate works. The first venue presents Maruyama Okyo’s ghost painting Hankonko no Zualongside Chihiro Ishizuka’s contemporary Reiwa Hankonko no Zu, while the second features Aomori idol group Ringo Musume. A nearby stone art installation depicting author Osamu Dazai adds another work to see at the second venue.

September falls right in the middle of apple harvest season at Hirosaki Apple Park, where visitors can head into the orchard and pick apples under the guidance of park staff. The varieties available change as different apples ripen, making the experience a particularly fitting addition to an autumn visit to one of Japan’s best known apple growing regions.

Individual visitors can register on the day, and the roughly 30 minute experience includes guidance on harvesting the fruit. Apples are weighed and purchased afterward, so visitors can take home what they pick.

The Nishimeya Dam Lake Tour combines sightseeing through the Shirakami foothills with an unusual ride straight into Tsugaru Shirakami Lake aboard an amphibious bus. Each standard trip spends part of the journey traveling through Nishimeya by road before the bus enters the lake for a cruise surrounded by mountains and forest.

Four departures are offered on regular operating days through late September. A special extended tour is also scheduled during the season, adding areas connected with Tsugaru Dam that are not part of the standard sightseeing course.

Coffee lovers can make a stop at Roadside Station Namioka Apple Hill during its autumn coffee festival, when 15 coffee shops from Aomori and beyond gather at the outdoor Event Plaza. Apple Hill also prepares festival limited collaboration products, adding the roadside station’s apple and food specialties to the mix. Its location between Aomori City and Hirosaki makes the festival an easy stop for travelers exploring the Tsugaru area by car.

Towada City Autumn Festival fills the center of town with elaborate floats, mikoshi, festival music, and large group dances over three days. Its daytime processions show off the floats in detail along Sanbongi Odori, while the Saturday evening program gives visitors another view as the decorated floats take to the streets after dark.

The festival has roots stretching back to the development of the Sanbongi plain and remains one of Towada’s major traditional events. Food stalls and other festival activities are also set up around the central streets throughout the weekend.

Gonohe Festival brings together the annual observances of Hachiman Shrine, Inari Shrine, and Shinmei Shrine in a three day celebration centered on the town’s ornate festival floats. Built around scenes from myths and legends, the floats combine sculpted figures with rocks, waves, autumn leaves, and other elaborate scenery before being hauled through Gonohe’s famously steep streets.

The weekend includes shrine and float processions, festival music competitions, traditional Gonohe Kouta dancing, illuminated nighttime floats, and Oshu Yosakoi. The mix of daytime processions and after dark performances gives visitors several different ways to experience the festival.

Yosakoi Tsugaru celebrates its 25th edition by turning part of central Hirosaki’s Dote-machi shopping district into an open air performance space. Teams take to the street in colorful costumes with their own choreography and music, allowing spectators to watch the routines at close range as they move through the city center.

The event is held on the same day as Hirosaki’s Culture Road program, making September 20 an especially lively day for exploring the downtown area. The 2026 participating team list will be published once finalized.

Shichinohe Autumn Festival welcomes the start of fall with three days of handmade floats, mikoshi, taiko, and traditional street festivities in the center of town. Neighborhood groups construct elaborate ema furyu floats inspired by picture scrolls, folktales, historical scenes, and other narrative subjects, with each group producing its own large moving display.

The festival begins with an eve celebration on Friday before the main weekend programs. The floats are joined by shrine processions, drumming, and flowing dance performances as the festivities spread through central Shichinohe.

SHIROFES. returns to Hirosaki Park for three days of street dance, music, traditional culture, sports, and art. Dance remains at the heart of the festival, with battles covering numerous styles alongside performances, workshops, Double Dutch, music, and live art in the castle park setting.

Much of the outdoor festival can be enjoyed for free, while selected programs inside Hirosaki Civic Hall require a viewing ticket. That setup makes it easy to stop by casually while sightseeing in Hirosaki Park or spend a full day following the competitive dance program.

Hirosaki Apple Park becomes a two day outdoor music venue for RINGO MUSIC FES., the free festival launched by Aomori based entertainment company RINGO MUSIC. With the stages surrounded by apple orchards during harvest season, the setting gives the festival a distinctly Hirosaki character.

The 2026 lineup combines Aomori performers with nationally known artists. Ringo Musume, Riceball, nobodyknows+, Sunplaza Nakano kun and Pappara Kawai, MONKEY MAJIK, Negicco, SCOOBIE DO, Uchikubi Gokumon Dokokai, and others are scheduled across the weekend. Admission to the festival grounds is free.

SUI SUI SUP offers guided stand up paddleboarding on Lake Towada from early summer through mid October. Rather than following one fixed route, guides choose the course according to the day’s weather, wind, water conditions, and participants, whether that means paddling beneath trees along the shore, heading farther out onto calm open water, or exploring a protected inlet.

Beginners are welcome, and the necessary board, paddle, life jacket, wetsuit or dry suit, and marine footwear are included in the participation fee. Visitors should bring clothes suitable for getting wet, a towel, and a change of clothes.

September gives football fans four chances to see ReinMeer Aomori at home, with matches split between the New Aomori Prefectural Sports Park Ball Field and Kakuhiro Group Athletic Stadium. The schedule includes afternoon and evening kickoffs, making a match easy to work into either a daytime or evening itinerary. The home run begins against J Lease FC on September 6, followed by Okinawa SV, Honda FC, and Yokogawa Musashino FC over the remainder of the month.

September is the final month for Aomori Museum of Art’s 20th anniversary exhibition, an ambitious survey of ornament and decorative culture across Europe and Asia. The exhibition moves from Celtic illuminated manuscripts and Jomon pottery and figurines to Ainu and Nanai clothing and jewelry, Shiko Munakata’s prints, and the powerful visual language of Aomori Nebuta. The museum also stays open until 8 PM for its September Night Museum date on September 19.

Kazama has used subjects including modernization, nuclear energy, education, and the Olympics, often approaching them through parody and dark humor.

The Hirosaki exhibition also introduces new oil paintings, including a swan series and landscapes inspired by places such as Gappo Park and the Asadokoro Coast. History, local legends, and literature are layered into these Aomori scenes, giving the exhibition a strong connection to the region hosting it.

Collection Exhibition 2026
Hirosaki Museum of Contemporary Art’s 2026 collection exhibition focuses on works connected with the converted brick warehouse and the surrounding region. The former warehouse began as a sake brewery in the Meiji and Taisho eras and was later used as a cider factory before architect Tsuyoshi Tane redesigned it as the Hirosaki Museum of Contemporary Art, which opened in 2020.

The half hour tour introduces architectural details preserved or reinterpreted during the renovation, including the “Cider Gold” roof and the distinctive brickwork used around the entrance. No advance reservation is required.

Sannai-Maruyama Site Center marks the fifth anniversary of the Jomon Sites of Hokkaido and Northern Tohoku becoming a World Heritage Site with a special exhibition that places northern Jomon culture in a wider Asian context. Archaeological objects and recent research explore everyday life, ritual, and the movement of people and ideas between the Japanese archipelago and the Asian continent.

The exhibition is held at Sannai-Maruyama itself, allowing visitors to see the artifacts before heading outside to explore the reconstructed buildings and excavated remains of one of Japan’s most important Jomon settlements.

The show is held inside the special exhibition room at one of Aomori’s most important archaeological sites, so visitors can see the exhibition and then walk through the reconstructed and excavated settlement areas outside. September hours run until 6 PM, one hour later than the October schedule.

September is the final month of Hachinohe Art Museum’s major exhibition devoted to contemporary artist Katsuhiko Hibino. Beginning with his early cardboard works of the 1980s, the exhibition traces how Hibino’s practice expanded into projects built around communication, communities, welfare, medicine, and other forms of social connection.

The final days also coincide with the KAIKON Project Harvest Festival from September 20 to 23. Talks, artwork research, guided tours, and other programs look back at the collaborative project carried out over the preceding eight months, with Hibino appearing for several of the events.

There will also be several related events held in conjunction with the exhibit, including unveiling artworks to the public, gallery talks, and even a talk featuring the artist Katsuhiko Hibino himself.

October is the final chance to see Inakadate’s 2026 rice paddy art before both viewing sites close on October 12. By this point in the season, the rice has matured far beyond its summer green, giving the enormous planted images a distinctly autumnal palette while preserving the designs created from different varieties of colored rice.

The first venue features Maruyama Okyo’s Hankonko no Zu alongside Chihiro Ishizuka’s Reiwa Hankonko no Zu, while the second presents Aomori idol group Ringo Musume and a nearby stone artwork of author Osamu Dazai. Handmade Village Risokyo shifts into its late season colors in October, when around 50,000 yellow and orange cosmos fill roughly 4,000 square meters of the countryside garden. The flowers remain on display through October 18, making this one of the final seasonal flower events before the attraction closes for winter.

The last day also brings a special food event built around Risokyo’s newly harvested buckwheat. Visitors can sit inside the traditional thatched roof Risotei restaurant and try freshly ground, freshly made, and freshly boiled soba prepared from buckwheat grown at the venue itself. Advance reservations are required for the soba event.

The meal is served between 11 AM and 2 PM on October 18 and costs 1,100 yen per person. Advance reservations are required, so this is one to book before heading out to the countryside rather than treating it as a walk in lunch stop.

Visitors can walk the garden during regular opening hours and also stop at Risotei, the old house restaurant on the grounds, or look around the waterwheel and displays of traditional farm tools. Nambu Night Market brings an autumn evening market to the countryside around Bade Park, with local food, specialty products, kitchen cars, shopping, and hands-on booths gathered in the parking area beside the complex. Organized by the youth division of the Nambu Town Chamber of Commerce, the event is designed around showing off a different side of the agricultural town after dark.

The October edition also includes a Halloween themed promotion, while a shuttle bus connects the venue with the former Fukuchi Elementary School parking area to help ease congestion.

Hirosaki Park enters one of its most colorful periods of the year at the end of October, when around 1,000 maple trees and 2,600 cherry trees turn red and gold around the castle grounds. The Hirosaki Castle Botanical Garden serves as the festival’s main venue, with chrysanthemum displays, floral art, and seasonal installations adding another layer of color to the historic park.

The experience continues after sunset, when selected areas of Hirosaki Park are illuminated until 9 PM. Visitors can also see the autumn scenery from the water aboard the Middle Moat sightseeing boat, which runs daily during the festival on a roughly 20 minute route past the Tatsumi Turret and surrounding foliage.

Saruka Park is scheduled to host Hirakawa’s autumn foliage festival from late October into early November as part of the official Aomori Kokuspo cultural program. The park is one of Hirakawa’s main seasonal sightseeing spots, with its ponds, shrine landscape, and surrounding trees taking on their autumn colors during the festival period.

The planned program includes a food and craft market, hands-on activities, and other small events around the park. The organizers have confirmed the 2026 festival period and free admission, but exact dates and hours have not yet been published, so please check the official website for the latest updates before your trip.

Takko Town celebrates its two signature foods at one of its biggest annual events, bringing Takko beef and the town’s famous garlic together at Soyumura 229 Ski Land. The centerpiece is the barbecue area, where visitors can cook a set of Takko beef, vegetables, and extra garlic themselves, while the festival also sells whole roasted Takko beef, garlic products, local specialties, and other food from around the area.

Stage events add to the weekend, including the festival’s characteristically named World Garlic Throwing Championship alongside music and entertainment. The barbecue sets are limited, so visitors who specifically want one are encouraged to buy an advance exchange ticket.

Aomori hosts Japan’s 80th National Sports Festival this October, bringing athletes from across the country to venues throughout the prefecture. The main competition period runs from October 10 to 20, with sports in Aomori City including athletics, tennis, volleyball, table tennis, baseball, rugby, sport climbing, and soft tennis. Earlier October competition dates also begin before the official opening ceremony.

For travelers, many competitions can be watched free of charge, with host city spectator pages generally directing visitors to arrive at the venue without advance registration, subject to capacity. The opening and closing ceremonies themselves are not open to general spectators because seating at Maeda Arena is reserved for invited participants and officials. Television and online coverage are planned for people unable to attend.

There is also a paid Sports Hospitality Program on October 12 for visitors who want a more curated experience. The package combines Aomori cultural sightseeing, a lunch reception at Nebuta House WA RASSE, networking, and special viewing of the sport climbing competition at Mori Transport Arena.

October is the final month for this guided trek into the Shirakami Mountains, with the route combining the World Heritage beech forest trail and the Anmon Valley area during the autumn season. Starting from Aqua Green Village ANMON, participants walk roughly six kilometers with a certified guide while learning about the beech forest and following the river toward Anmon Falls.

The route takes around two and a half hours and includes terrain treated more like a mountain hike than a casual park walk, with helmets provided for participants. Access to individual falls can change depending on trail and weather conditions, so the guide may alter the course on the day.

October is the final month of the camping season at Moya Hills, a highland campground at the northern entrance to the Hakkoda area overlooking Aomori City and Mutsu Bay. Clear days bring wide views toward the bay, while the elevated setting also makes the campground a good place for city lights and stargazing after dark.

Visitors can choose between powered auto camping sites and inexpensive open tent sites, with cabins also available for those who want more shelter as autumn temperatures drop. A substantial rental menu covers tents, tarps, sleeping bags, lanterns, tables, chairs, fire pits, barbecue grills, and cooking utensils, which makes the campground practical even for travelers without their own equipment.

Travelers who miss Hirosaki Neputa Festival season can still get an introduction to the tradition at Tsugaruhan Neputa Village, located just outside Hirosaki Park. The paid exhibition area contains full size Hirosaki Neputa floats, festival music demonstrations, Tsugaru shamisen performances, traditional craft workshops, and a Japanese garden, bringing several parts of Tsugaru culture together in one stop.

The shopping and restaurant areas can be entered without paying museum admission, so it also works as a convenient stop for local food and souvenirs while sightseeing around Hirosaki Castle.

WA RASSE: Nebuta Hayashi Performance & Haneto Experience
WA RASSE keeps the energy of Aomori Nebuta Festival going long after August, with full size prize winning floats displayed inside its Nebuta Hall and daily programs that introduce the music and movement of the festival. Staff perform the distinctive Nebuta hayashi rhythms before visitors are invited to try parts of the festival experience themselves, including haneto dancing and musical instruments.

Large screen films of the actual festival also play throughout the day, making the museum one of the easiest ways to understand how the huge illuminated floats, musicians, and dancers come together during Aomori’s biggest summer event.

November brings the final stretch of apple picking at Hirosaki Apple Park, with the regular harvest experience expected to continue through around the middle of the month. The varieties available depend on what is still ripening in the orchard, so late season visitors may find a different selection from those who came earlier in fall.

Individual visitors can still register on the day and join a roughly 30 minute guided picking session, with staff directing participants to the apples ready for harvest. Since the season can shift according to growing and picking conditions, it is worth checking the park’s latest update before making a late November trip.

Fukaura’s enormous Kita-Kanegasawa ginkgo becomes one of Aomori’s most dramatic late autumn sights when its canopy turns gold in November. Estimated to be more than 1,000 years old, the nationally designated Natural Monument stands around 31 meters tall with a trunk circumference of about 22 meters, making it one of Japan’s largest ginkgo trees.

The peak color period usually falls from mid to late November, when the tree is illuminated each evening as “Big Yellow.” Against the darkness of the surrounding countryside, the huge golden canopy becomes especially striking after sunset. The site is about a 10 minute walk from JR Kita-Kanegasawa Station, making it possible to visit without a car, although November nights along the Sea of Japan coast can be very cold.

Hachinohe’s enormous Sunday morning market continues throughout November, with around 300 stalls stretching roughly 800 meters along Tatehana Wharf. Seafood and farm produce share the market with an unusually broad breakfast lineup, including grilled fish, noodles, fried foods, bread, sweets, coffee, prepared dishes, and regional specialties from across northern Tohoku.

The November dates fall on every Sunday of the month. The market starts around sunrise and vendors begin packing up as products sell out, so arriving early gives you the best selection and the liveliest atmosphere.

Asamushi Aquarium’s indoor dolphin performance makes a good November option when the weather turns colder, with powerful jumps and synchronized routines staged in one of Japan’s relatively unusual indoor dolphin pools. The current show, Our Shining Memories, includes a roulette element that changes part of the performance each time, so repeat visitors may not see exactly the same program.

There is plenty to see beyond the show as well, including the large tunnel aquarium, displays of marine life from Aomori and the surrounding seas, penguins, seals, and other feeding and animal programs scheduled throughout the day. Visitors who want a closer view of the dolphins can also purchase a special trainer side seat for one of the performances.

The Hirosaki Castle Chrysanthemum and Autumn Leaves Festival continues through November 8, giving early month visitors the full combination of seasonal flowers and autumn color around Hirosaki Park. The Botanical Garden forms the main festival area, while the wider castle grounds are filled with the red and gold leaves of the park’s maples and cherry trees.

One of the best ways to see the scenery is from the Middle Moat sightseeing boat, which follows a roughly 20 minute route past the Tatsumi Turret and the tree lined moat. A separate sightseeing rickshaw also operates around the park, offering a short ride from the Otemon Gate area toward the castle grounds.

Hirakawa’s autumn foliage festival is also scheduled to continue into early November at Saruka Park. The park’s ponds, shrine landscape, and tree lined grounds give the event a scenic backdrop, while the planned program adds a food and craft market, hands-on workshops, and other small attractions during the foliage season.

Farmers and producers sell and promote local crops and processed foods, while businesses introduce products made in the city, giving visitors an easy way to browse a broad cross section of what the region produces.

Tsugaru City’s preservation festa brings several regional folk performing arts together for an afternoon stage program at Matsunoyakata. Members of the Tsugaru City Traditional Performing Arts Preservation Association perform traditions that have been handed down within local communities, giving visitors a concentrated introduction to the area’s music, dance, and festival culture.

The planned program includes Tozan and Gezan festival music, Hohai Bushi, Yasaburo Bushi, Kizukuri Jinku, and Denosato Shishi Odori. Admission is free, with the performance scheduled to begin at 1:30 PM once the final November date is confirmed.

The Mutsu Bay Rogaining Ride reaches its final days in November, giving cyclists until November 5 to complete an approximately 220 kilometer circuit around Mutsu Bay. The route links the Tsugaru and Shimokita peninsulas using the Mutsu Bay Ferry, with nine designated checkpoints encouraging riders to stop at coastal communities and sightseeing areas along the way.

There is no fixed race start or stopwatch. Participants complete the route at their own pace, document the required checkpoints online, and can receive a completion certificate and commemorative tenugui after finishing. Entry itself is free, although ferry fares, accommodation, meals, and other travel expenses are paid separately.

ReinMeer Aomori has three November home fixtures: November 8 against Briobecca Urayasu Ichikawa, November 15 against Azul Claro Numazu, and November 28 against VONDS Ichihara. All three kick off at 1 PM at Kakuhiro Group Athletic Stadium.

Aomori Wat’s play five home games across three parts of the prefecture in November, giving basketball fans options in Mutsu, Aomori City, and Hirosaki. The month opens with the second game of a two day series against Tachikawa Dice in Mutsu, followed by consecutive home games against Yamagata Wyverns at Maeda Arena and a later weekend against Koshigaya Alphas at Aomori Prefectural Budokan in Hirosaki.

Kazama Sachiko: Clairvoyance in a 9m2 room
November 15 is the final day of Sachiko Kazama’s first major solo exhibition in Tohoku, giving visitors one last chance to see her dense black and white woodcuts alongside the new oil paintings created for the Hirosaki presentation. Her work moves between modern history, social commentary, parody, and imagined scenes, with subjects ranging from industrialization and education to nuclear power and mass events. Since admission includes the museum’s Collection Exhibition 2026, both displays can be seen on the same ticket.

Hirosaki Museum of Contemporary Art’s collection exhibition also closes on November 15. The display brings together works acquired for or closely connected with the museum and its converted brick warehouse, including Tsuyoshi Ozawa’s The Return of S.T., centered on Hirosaki born poet, playwright, and filmmaker Shuji Terayama.

Works by Yoshitomo Nara, Naoya Hatakeyama and Kazunari Hattori, Shinji Ohmaki, Jean-Michel Othoniel, Navin Rawanchaikul, Rei Saito, Tomoko Sato, and others round out the exhibition. Admission is included with the Sachiko Kazama show, so there is no need for a separate ticket.

Tsugaruhan Neputa Village
By November, Hirosaki’s summer Neputa Festival is long over, but Tsugaruhan Neputa Village provides an easy way to experience the tradition year round. Full size Hirosaki Neputa floats are displayed inside the paid exhibition area, where visitors can also hear festival music, watch Tsugaru shamisen performances, and see demonstrations of traditional Tsugaru crafts.

Hands-on workshops make the experience more than a museum visit, with options such as painting a miniature goldfish neputa to take home. The attraction sits beside Hirosaki Park, making it great for travelers visiting the castle area during late autumn.

WA RASSE: Nebuta Hayashi Performance & Haneto Experience
November visitors can also experience Aomori Nebuta culture indoors at WA RASSE, where several full size prize winning floats are displayed only steps from Aomori Station. Daily programs introduce the characteristic rhythm of Nebuta hayashi before visitors are invited to try parts of the festival themselves, including haneto dancing and instruments.

Large screen films of the actual festival also play throughout the day, making the museum one of the easiest ways to understand how the huge illuminated floats, musicians, and dancers come together during Aomori’s biggest summer event.

Aomori’s fall calendar stretches from September festival season into the deep colors and late harvests of November. Traditional processions, apple picking, autumn foliage, outdoor adventures, live sports, and major museum exhibitions give travelers plenty to plan around throughout the season, while indoor attractions such as WA RASSE and Tsugaruhan Neputa Village make it possible to experience some of Aomori’s best known cultural traditions even after the summer festivals have ended.
