To avoid wasting valuable sightseeing time in a long queue, and potentially save some money too, we recommend booking your ticket in advance through KKday.

Tickets purchased on the day usually cost 5,000 yen and may rise to 5,500 yen during peak periods. Depending on the date, booking through KKday can save you around 1,000 yen.

Advance booking also makes entry much smoother on busy days. Simply show your e-ticket when you arrive and head straight in without worrying about the ticket line disrupting your schedule.

It is an easy way to save time, effort, and money all at once.

Once you're all set, first up is a ride on one of Japan's fastest ropeways. The cabin is spacious, and as you climb higher, the sweeping view of Lake Biwa opens up before you with zero blind spots.

In just 5 short minutes, you'll glide smoothly through the clouds and arrive at a stunning summit world over a thousand meters high.

Once you reach the summit, the highlight is simply sitting back and taking in the view. For the most luxurious experience, head to the Infinity Lounge at Biwako Terrace.

Seats are reserved in 80-minute time slots, giving you plenty of uninterrupted time to enjoy the scenery. The 3,000 yen Infinity Plan includes a welcome drink, while the 5,000 yen Moët Plan comes with a mini bottle of Moët champagne and the snack of the day.

The lounge is open from 10 AM to 3:30 PM, with last orders at 3 PM. Children under 6 are not permitted, although selected seats are available for guests traveling with pets.

If you're after an equally spectacular view outside the exclusive lounge, the spacious outdoor deck in front of THE MAIN Terrace Café is not to be missed. I headed to this main viewing area myself, ordered a scoop of boysenberry milk and Omi black tea gelato along with a matcha latte, and settled in on the outdoor deck.

This is home to Biwako Terrace's most iconic feature: the infinity water mirror. Its clever design blends the shimmering blue water with the lake and sky below, creating a dreamy illusion where sea and sky seem to merge into one.

Best of all, this stunning spot is completely free for every visitor to photograph to their heart's content. The weather was gorgeous on the day we visited, and we could take in almost the entire sweeping panorama of Lake Biwa.

Just stroll along the wooden boardwalk, or use the water mirror as your foreground, and you'll easily capture photos with an incredible sense of scale and polish, whichever angle you choose.

After snapping photos and taking a short break at the main viewing deck, don't forget to make the most of the unlimited chairlift rides included in your pass and head up for an even higher vantage point.

Simply hop on the Uchimi Chairlift and the Horai Chairlift, enjoy the breeze on your face, and glide up to the higher summit of Mt. Horai, all without breaking a sweat climbing anything yourself.

Once you reach the top of Mt. Horai, you'll be greeted by Café 360, with its huge curved wooden viewing deck. The design has a warm, natural feel, and once you settle onto the curved wooden steps in your favorite spot, you'll get an unobstructed 360-degree view of Lake Biwa and the surrounding mountains. True to its name, it really does feel like standing among the clouds, both breathtaking and peaceful.

Of course, a view this good deserves a little something sweet to go with it. I ordered an adorable strawberry donut paired with a refreshingly cool soda. Up on the breezy mountaintop, one bite of the sweet, slightly tart donut alongside the fizzy, refreshing soda instantly cools you down. It's the perfect summer combo.

Savoring a taste of summer while looking out over the breathtaking lake and mountain scenery is bound to become one of the most memorable moments of your whole trip.

After all that photo-taking and exploring up the mountain, you're bound to work up an appetite. The summit area at Biwako Valley has scenic restaurants where you can refuel, but keep in mind that options up here are fairly limited, and opening hours usually run from 10:30 AM to 3:30 PM, with last orders at 3 PM.

To avoid wasting precious time waiting in line, we strongly recommend avoiding the lunch rush between 12 PM and 1 PM. Eating a little earlier or later is the smarter move.

When it comes to lunch, there are two very different restaurants worth considering, so pick whichever suits your pace:

If you want to sit down for a proper, satisfying meal, this restaurant, known for its refined grilled dishes and local ingredients, is the top pick.

I tried the sizzling Omi beef steak here, and it genuinely blew me away. Omi beef ranks alongside Kobe beef and Matsusaka beef as one of Japan’s three great wagyu brands, and it is actually the oldest of the three.

The steak arrived sizzling on a hot iron plate. It was incredibly tender, with a rich, buttery flavor that melted in every bite, while the crispy golden potato wedges on the side paired with it perfectly.

I highly recommend trying it for yourself. Honestly, just thinking back on that flavor makes me want another bite right now!

If your top priority is snapping as many great photos as possible without spending too much time on a full meal, Terrace Café suits you better. It mainly serves sandwiches, desserts, and light bites, with quick service and fantastic views from every seat.

You can enjoy a light meal while still taking in the unbeatable view of Lake Biwa, then head straight back out to continue your photo tour without missing a beat.

If you get a little peckish while wandering around the terrace, or just fancy a quick bite, don't skip Café Stand at Grand Terrace out in the open-air area. I ordered their most popular item, the fried Omi beef curry bread, along with their signature Terrace Soda.

The best part about this curry bread is that it is fried fresh to order. After just a 3-minute wait, you will receive a piping-hot, incredibly fragrant fried bun.

Bite through the crispy outside and soft interior, and you will find it packed with generous chunks of Omi beef. The curry flavor is rich and full without being spicy, so both kids and adults can enjoy it.

Since it is served straight from the fryer, be careful of the heat when holding it for photos and taking that first bite!

Paired with the curry bread is the Terrace Soda, a lemon soda with a dreamy blue gradient. The refreshing fizz is wonderfully cooling, while the slightly tart lemon flavor perfectly balances the richness of the fried bread.

Snap a photo of the dazzling blue soda with the water mirror and Lake Biwa in the background, and it is sure to rack up the likes on your feed.

After a full day up the summit, once you've taken the ropeway back down, don't rush off just yet! The souvenir shop at the ropeway station is the perfect place to pick up something to take home and keep the memories alive.

There's a huge range of goods here, and I especially recommend looking for the same specially selected black tea served at the restaurant up top, so you can savor it at home and feel like you're back in that leisurely, scenic spot all over again.

If you're after a souvenir with a unique shape and real novelty value, don't miss the adorable ropeway-shaped chocolate crunch! Its packaging is a spot-on recreation of the very ropeway you rode today, and it's guaranteed to be a hit whether you're gifting it to kids or bringing it in as an office souvenir.

There's also a shrimp cracker here that's a big hit with visitors from Taiwan and Hong Kong, crispy and packed with flavor, great for gifting or keeping for yourself.

If you're still craving that Omi beef from earlier, many travelers immediately reach for the ready-to-eat Omi beef curry pack. Just be aware that since it contains real meat, customs regulations in many countries mean you won't be able to bring it home.

No need to be disappointed though, the shop also sells crispy Omi beef rice crackers! They let you enjoy that rich Omi beef flavor all over again, and you can take them home with zero hassle, making them the perfect safe and satisfying souvenir alternative.

When planning the perfect trip to Biwako Valley, there are a few easily overlooked but important details to keep in mind. To make sure your trip goes off without a hitch, be sure to check these three things before you set off:

Weather is absolutely the make-or-break factor for this trip. Mountain conditions can change fast, so even if it's sunny down in the city, the summit could be shrouded in thick fog.

To avoid paying to go up only to be greeted by a wall of white, we strongly recommend checking the Live Camera feed on Biwako Valley's official website on the morning of your visit to confirm visibility and conditions at the summit before deciding to head up.

As mentioned earlier, the summit sits 1,100 meters above sea level, so temperatures are usually 5°C to 7°C (9°F to 13°F) cooler than in the city.

Even in the height of summer, it was a sweltering 32°C (90°F) in town on the day I visited, but only around 25°C (77°F) at the top. The breeze feels wonderful and makes for a great escape from the heat.

However, if you spend a long time outdoors or on the terrace, it can start to feel a little chilly. No matter how hot it is, if you tend to feel the cold, it is worth packing a light jacket just in case.

Even though it's cooler up on the mountain, don't underestimate the strength of the sun! Whether it's the infinity water mirror at THE MAIN or Café 360 at the top of Mt. Horai, most of the viewing areas are completely open with no shade.

UV rays are actually very intense at high altitude, so if you're planning to spend time taking photos outdoors, make sure to apply sunscreen ahead of time and bring sunglasses or a hat, so you don't end up with a sunburn you didn't see coming.

This day trip to Biwako Valley and Biwako Terrace showed me some truly magnificent still views from 1,100 meters up, and between the scenic lounge sofas, the infinity water mirror, and top-notch Omi beef, it was pure relaxation from start to finish.

But it's not just about still views. There's also a hugely popular active adventure here: the zipline that sends you soaring across Lake Biwa. Gearing up and flying across the valley with that stunning lake backdrop looks absolutely thrilling! I'll admit I chickened out and didn't work up the courage to try it myself this time, so I'll leave that ultimate rush for all you adventure lovers out there to discover for yourselves.
