- Written by: Naho Jishikyu
One of the many things Japanese people look forward to during New Year’s is the arrival of “fukubukuro” lucky bags. Many of Japan’s most famous shops and brands release a fukubukuro packed with a tantalizing variety of limited-edition, New Year-themed goods.
While many consider the main thrill of fukubukuro the discovery of what’s inside after purchasing, fukubukuro with the contents revealed or ones you can purchase in advance online are also growing in popularity.
We’ve selected four fukubukuro from internationally adored Japanese brands for the 2022 New Year’s season. Let’s take a look!
1. Kaldi Coffee Farm: 3 Types of Coffee Fukubukuro Sure to Delight Caffeine Lovers!
Kaldi Coffee Farm, Japan’s favorite coffee and imported food store, is selling three different kinds of coffee-based fukubukuro. For those unsure of which to choose, we recommend the “Coffee Fukubukuro Popular Set” (2,000 yen including tax).
The contents include three different coffee blends - the fresh and vibrant “KALDI New Year Blend,” the delicately balanced sweet, bitter, acidic, and fragrant “Blue Mountain Blend,” and the lavish dark chocolate hints of the “Brazil Dark Roast Carmo de Minas.”
The bag, which is perfect for winter and made from canvas with a suede bottom, comes in both orange and blue. The inside also has a handy pocket, making it a great bag for everyday use!
For those seeking an encounter with special, rare coffee, definitely check out the “Coffee Fukubukuro Goka Set” (5,000 yen including tax). This set also contains three different coffee varieties - the harmonious “Blue Mountain No.1,” the exquisite “Mocha Matari,” and “Kenya,” which boasts a sweetness, not unlike dried fruits.
This set also comes in a winter-inspired tote bag made from suede with a handle and bottom of synthetic leather alongside an inner pocket and embossed logo.
For those that take their coffee in larger quantities, don’t look past the “Popular Drip Coffee Set” (3,000 yen including tax), which presents a whopping lineup of 6 coffee varieties! 5 of these are beloved drip coffee blends, including the “KALDI New Year Blend,” “Blue Mountain Blend,” and “Doi Tung Coffee,” along with the scarce and much-coveted “Panama Geisha” blend. The cute drawstring bag is made of soft, luscious cotton fitted with a pocket on the outside for added usability.
