Japan Weather Overview
Japan 7-Day Forecast (August 31-September 6, 2026)
As August transitions into September, expect a dynamic mix of weather across Japan! The week opens with clear to cloudy skies, but a mid-week low-pressure system and weather front will bring rain across many regions before clearing up toward the weekend. Temperatures will span from mild to warm up north in Sapporo, warm to hot in central Japan like Tokyo, to consistently warm and tropical down south in Naha.
From September 3 to 4th, a low-pressure system moving east will stretch a weather front across eastern and western Japan, followed by a high-pressure system moving over the Kuril Islands from the 5th to 7th. Meanwhile, a lingering low-pressure area south of Japan will keep conditions warm and moist.
Disaster Prevention Notes: Around September 3, the Sea of Japan side of northern and eastern Japan may see warning-level heavy rain depending on frontal activity. From September 3 through the 5th, areas stretching from the Pacific side of eastern Japan to western Japan, along with Okinawa and Amami, could also experience warning-level heavy downpours.
Typhoon Information

A tropical depression is currently positioned in the Philippine Sea south of Japan and is forecast to strengthen into a Tropical Storm by September 1, at which point it will likely be assigned a name. Based on the provided data, it will approach the southern coast of Japan later in the week, but is not expected to develop into a severe typhoon.
Japan’s typhoon season runs from May through October, with most activity from July to September. During a typhoon, transit delays and cancellations can be expected. What to Do in September
September marks a beautiful transition in Japan, as the intense summer heat begins to soften into the milder, refreshing breezes of early autumn. The countryside turns a stunning golden hue during the rice harvest, and locals celebrate Tsukimi (moon viewing) festivals, gathering to admire the harvest moon and enjoy traditional treats like tsukimi dango.
While the massive summer matsuri wind down, September offers its own thrilling cultural events. Tokyo hosts the highly anticipated September Grand Sumo Tournament, while Osaka comes alive with the high-speed, adrenaline-pumping Kishiwada Danjiri Matsuri. For outdoor enthusiasts, the first week of the month offers the final opportunity to catch the tail end of the Mt. Fuji climbing season before the mountain officially closes to the public.
As the month progresses, nature lovers can head north to Hokkaido or to high-elevation areas in the Japan Alps to witness the very beginning of the country’s spectacular autumn foliage (koyo) season. When it comes to seasonal eating, September is a culinary delight—be sure to savor early autumn flavors like roasted sweet potatoes, chestnuts, freshly harvested Asian pears, and grilled sanma (Pacific saury).

City-Specific 7-Day Forecasts (August 31-September 6, 2026)
Tokyo

Tokyo opens the week under persistent cloud cover, with temperatures peaking early in the sultry mid-30s Celsius (mid-90s Fahrenheit) alongside brief stretches of sunshine. Wet weather moves in during the mid-week period, bringing a sharp rise in rain probability that helps knock daytime highs down to a much cooler mid-20s Celsius (mid-70s Fahrenheit). Overnight lows will steadily decline from 24°C (75°F) to around 20°C (68°F) by the weekend.

Sapporo
Sapporo starts with mild, overcast skies before a damp mid-week stretch brings a high chance of showers alongside cooler conditions. High temperatures dip from around 25°C (77°F) down into the low 20s Celsius (low 70s Fahrenheit) before steadily climbing toward a warm 28°C (82°F) by the weekend. Overnight lows will gradually cool from 19°C (66°F) down to a crisp 15°C (59°F). Brighter, clearer skies reemerge toward the end of the week with sunshine taking over.
Sendai
Sendai greets visitors with predominantly overcast skies that gradually give way to gentle sun breaks as the week progresses. Midweek brings the highest chance of showers alongside a temporary warm spell, pushing daytime highs past 30°C (86°F) before temperatures settle back into the pleasant mid-20s Celsius (mid-70s Fahrenheit). Evening lows also cool noticeably, shifting from humid mid-20s Celsius (mid-70s Fahrenheit) down to crisp, comfortable high 10s Celsius (upper 60s Fahrenheit) by the weekend.
Osaka
Osaka starts off sweltering under sunny to partly cloudy skies with highs soaring up to 37°C (99°F) and humid nights staying around 28°C (82°F). Midweek brings a noticeable shift as clouds build, ushering in high chances of rain and cooling temperatures down to much more comfortable highs around 28°C (82°F) and overnight lows dropping to 23°C (73°F). The weekend settles into overcast but milder conditions.
Fukuoka
Fukuoka starts the week under sweltering conditions, with daytime highs peaking at 36°C (97°F) before a mid-week shift brings cooler, cloudier skies and temperatures easing down to 29°C (84°F). Overnight lows follow a similar gentle decline from 28°C (82°F) down to 25°C (77°F). Mostly cloudy skies dominate the period, accompanied by a growing chance of scattered showers toward the middle of the week.
Naha
Naha settles into a warm, humid pattern this week, featuring mostly overcast skies punctuated by frequent passing showers that maintain a tropical atmosphere. High temperatures consistently hover near the low 30s Celsius (around 86°F–90°F) with pleasantly warm, balmy evenings in the mid-20s Celsius (mid-70s Fahrenheit). With rain probabilities routinely lingering around 40 to 60 percent, brief showers will periodically interrupt the cloud cover throughout your stay.
Seasonal Tips & Current Vibe
- Tip 1: Pack for Changing Seasons September bridges the gap between summer heat and autumn cool. While daytime in central and southern Japan stays warm and humid, evenings become noticeably milder. Bring light, breathable layers for the day, along with a light jacket or cardigan for cooler nights and air-conditioned spaces.
- Tip 2: Plan for Typhoon Season September is the peak of Japan's typhoon season, which can bring sudden heavy rains and transit delays. Build some flexibility into your itinerary, carry a compact raincoat or travel umbrella, and stay informed by checking local weather apps or English-language portals for real-time alerts.
- Tip 3: Enjoy Fewer Crowds—But Watch for Silver Week! With summer holidays over, early September offers a more relaxed travel experience with shorter lines at major attractions. However, be aware of “Silver Week” in mid-to-late September, when consecutive national holidays cause a massive surge in domestic travel. If visiting during this window, book your accommodations and bullet trains well in advance.
