Japan Weather Overview

Japan 7-Day Forecast (August 25–31, 2025)

During this period, a strong Pacific high-pressure system will stretch over southern Japan, bringing heat and humidity to much of the country. On August 27, a developing low-pressure system is expected to move into the Sea of Okhotsk, pushing a front down toward the Sea of Japan side of western Japan. By August 28–30, high pressure over the Sea of Okhotsk will shift eastward, while a trough of low pressure is expected to pass over northern Japan around August 29–30. On August 31, high pressure will cover much of the country again, leading to more stable weather.

However, heavy rain is possible on August 26–27, especially on the Sea of Japan side of northern and eastern Japan. Depending on how active the front becomes, some areas could experience warning-level rainfall, with the potential for stormy conditions and rough seas in northern regions.

Meanwhile, eastern and western Japan — including major cities like Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka — are expected to see very high temperatures, with some areas hitting 35°C (95°F) or more. Travelers should take precautions against heatstroke and stay well hydrated.

What to Do in August

August is considered the height of Japan’s summer festival season, when the country bursts into color and sound. Nearly every region holds its own celebration, ranging from small neighborhood Bon-odori dances to massive, city-wide spectacles, like the Aomori Nebuta Matsuri.

In Tokyo, you might catch the Asakusa Samba Carnival, a fun parade blending Japanese flair with Brazilian rhythms. In eastern Japan, the Nagaoka Fireworks Festival in Niigata Prefecture is one of the largest in the country, lighting up the night sky with thousands of spectacular bursts. Kyoto hosts the Daimonji Gozan Okuribi on August 16, where giant bonfires shaped like Chinese characters are lit on surrounding mountains to send ancestral spirits back to the afterlife.

At many of the summer festivals, expect to see elaborately decorated floats, yukata-clad dancers moving in unison to folk songs, and food stalls offering a variety of summer street foods.

Especially for first-time visitors, viewing (and even joining) a local festival isn’t just a fun activity; it’s a great chance to connect with Japan on a different level and make a lasting memory.
