Incredible Trip! We Take the New 'SPACIA X' Luxurious Train With Private Lounges, Cafe from Asakusa to Nikko
- Written by: Miyu Shimada
When it comes to popular tourist destinations near Tokyo that are loved by international visitors, Nikko and Kinugawa in Tochigi Prefecture take the spotlight. And one of the trains connecting this area with Tokyo is the Tobu Railway's limited express train, SPACIA.
Exciting news awaits in July 2023 as the brand-new 'SPACIA X' series will be introduced. But guess what? Our intrepid LIVE JAPAN staff had the privilege of attending a special preview ride before the official launch! Now, let's delve into the thrilling details of this exclusive experience.
Sneak Peek into the Test Ride of the New Express Train, SPACIA X!
Chia-chi and Timothy, two members of the LIVE JAPAN team, had the eagerly awaited opportunity to experience the launch of the "SPACIA X," the brand-new express train.
Chia-chi shared, "Japan's railway system is famous even in Taiwan. Many Taiwanese visitors are excited to see what Japanese trains are like when they come here. I'm also filled with anticipation!"
Timothy added, "Japanese trains are renowned worldwide for their wide variety, unique designs, facilities, and services. Not only the captivating exterior but also the interior of the train is something I'm really looking forward to. I'm particularly interested in exploring the Café & Bar space this time!"
Discover the Allure of Nikko, a Must-Visit Destination for Many Foreign Tourists
Nikko, situated among the top tourist spots in the Kanto region, attracts a significant number of foreign visitors. Its appeal lies in the abundance of breathtaking natural scenery that changes with each season, a wide range of activities, rejuvenating hot springs, iconic historical structures representing Japan, time-honored traditional crafts, and delightful local cuisine. Nikko offers a plethora of sights to see and experiences to try, making it a must-visit location in Japan.
Furthermore, one of the reasons for its popularity among international tourists is its easy accessibility. Nikko can be reached in just 1 hour and 50 minutes (using the "SPACIA" limited express train) with a direct connection from Asakusa Station, which is considered the number one tourist spot in Tokyo.
Nikko is a favored destination for school excursions among elementary and middle school students in the Kanto region. It is also a popular choice for girls' trips, family vacations, and attracts visitors of all ages. Particularly during the vibrant autumn foliage season, people from all over the country flock to Nikko to witness its splendor.
Debuting July 15, 2023! Introducing the New SPACIA X Limited Express Train
"SPACIA" is the monicker given to the "100 series" train, which made its debut in 1990 and has been an essential mode of transportation for tourists heading to Nikko, providing a comfortable train journey. And now, the new SPACIA X model will commence its operation on July 15, 2023.
While inheriting the traditions of the original "SPACIA" model, the new "SPACIA X" has undergone various updates in terms of its vehicle design, interior, seating, and environmentally friendly features. The seating options now offer a total of six variations. From standard seats to lounge-style seating and private compartments, passengers can choose according to their purpose, group size, and budget.
Choose from a Variety of Seat Options to Suit Your Travel Style!
This is the standard seat option available on the train. In addition to the table installed at the back of the seat in front, there is also a small table attached to the armrest.
Each row is equipped with a personal window, ensuring a comfortable and functional space with excellent views. The seats are designed for both comfort and convenience, and you'll find it easy to enjoy the scenery. Of course, power outlets are also available, allowing you to charge your smartphones, tablets, and even work on your laptop comfortably.
"Even though it's called the standard class, it's surprisingly comfortable! The cushions are plush, allowing your body to sink in and relax. The legroom and seat width are ample, and I, being of average size, never felt cramped. I'm sure even taller individuals will have a spacious and comfortable experience. The seats are wide enough, and the facilities, such as power outlets and tables, are well-equipped," Timothy remarked.
Unlike the traditional SPACIA, the new SPACIA X offers a premium seating option called the "2+1" arrangement, with three seats per row (some rows have a "1+1" configuration as well). These premium seats provide ample space, both in terms of legroom and seat width, allowing for a more comfortable and relaxed experience. The vibrant orange color stands out against the luxurious carpet, adding a touch of elegance. The seats are equipped with a backshell structure that allows for reclining without worrying about the person behind, and they also feature adjustable pillows with neck support, ensuring a comfortable journey. These thoughtful design elements make traveling time more enjoyable.
Here we have the Box Seat, which is a semi-private seating option separated by partitions. You can immerse yourself in your own personal space and enjoy the scenery. The seats have ample width, allowing for comfortable seating even when accompanied by small children or infants.
This compartment, predominantly in red, is an updated version of the traditional private compartments that were also available in the previous SPACIA model. The foldable table offers excellent functionality.
Chia-chi-san commented, "Having the option of private compartments is very convenient, especially when traveling with family or a group of friends! It provides a fantastic space where you can maintain privacy while still enjoying conversations with your companions."
Renewal of Asakusa Station & Tobu Nikko Station
Furthermore, in conjunction with the launch of the SPACIA X, Asakusa Station on the Tobu Skytree Line and Tobu Nikko Station on the Tobu Nikko Line are also undergoing a transformation.
Both stations will be renewed with designs that reflect the natural beauty and grandeur of Nikko.
Highlight Point 1: The "Cockpit Suite"
The most noteworthy and unmissable feature of the new SPACIA X is the Cockpit Suite in Car 6. True to its name, this unique seating option transforms the entire rear section of the driver's cabin into a private room. There is only one suite per train composition, making it an exclusive experience.
This area is designed to evoke the image of a private jet, truly embodying the concept of a "running suite room." With a glass front, passengers in the Cockpit Suite can enjoy a premium seat that offers a view of the driver's cabin.
"This is amazing! The interior is spacious, and the seats are incredibly comfortable. The elegant decor creates a luxurious ambiance. It's a quiet and private space, perfect for enjoying time with friends or relaxing with family. I believe it will create unforgettable memories during a visit to Japan," expressed Timothy, clearly impressed by the Cockpit Suite.
The private room in the Cockpit Suite boasts the largest size among private compartments on private railway express trains and can accommodate up to 7 people.
The stylish large windows are perfect for enjoying the beautiful Japanese countryside scenery.
"When you close the door in the suite, you won't hear any noise from other cars, creating a truly special private space. The spaciousness is, of course, remarkable, but I also love the calming color tones of the interior! If travelers can experience long-distance journeys in such an elegant manner, it will undoubtedly be an unforgettable and delightful experience," remarked Chia-chi.
Highlight Point 2: Indulge in Nikko Cuisine at "GOEN CAFÉ SPACIA X"
Located within the Cockpit Lounge in Car 1 is the GOEN CAFÉ SPACIA X, a café counter that offers a unique dining experience.
With the theme of deepening the connection with Nikko through just a quick visit, the café offers original gourmet dishes and drinks that showcase the flavors of Nikko and the surrounding areas. These creations are developed in collaboration with various local businesses along the railway, providing an opportunity to savor the essence of Nikko.
Here are some examples of original sweets and appetizers that are perfect companions for coffee or beer. These were specially prepared for the test ride event.
Chia-chi's favorite is the Nikko's branded Nijimasu (Rainbow Trout) called "Itadakimasu." "The tender texture and the smoky flavor are absolutely exquisite!" Chia-chi expressed.
In addition, Chia-chi, with a sweet tooth, found the bite-sized Yokan (sweet bean jelly) to be a big hit. "The sweetness is just right, and the bite-sized Yokan is a must-try! It's great to be able to enjoy both coffee and alcohol along with the sweets," Chia-chi shared.
Timothy, a foodie, was also impressed by the flavors!
"The Nikko Blend Coffee has a light and refreshing taste that pairs perfectly with any of the sweets or snacks. The beer has a gentle and easy-to-drink flavor. In particular, the 'Itadakimasu Trout and Pickled Onion Rillettes' is a standout dish with its smoky and slightly spicy pickled onion flavor that becomes addictive. It's a recommended item that truly represents Japanese cuisine and is worth experiencing!" Timothy enthusiastically shared.
By the way, there is an additional fee to use the seats in the Cockpit Lounge, but the café is available for all passengers on board other cars.
"The moment I entered the Cockpit Lounge, I was captivated by the clear view of the driver's cabin! It felt like being in a spaceship, so cool!" Chia-chi exclaimed.
Especially for Timothy, he expressed, "I absolutely love the relaxed ambiance of the Cockpit Lounge, accompanied by the gourmet experience. It feels like a living room on the tracks. If it were up to me, I would enjoy a cup of coffee on the way to Nikko and savor a craft beer from Nikko on the return journey, relishing the feeling of being at home while preparing for the trip and basking in the afterglow."
Both the coffee and craft beer are original products developed exclusively for this new SPACIA X express train. They offer a unique and special taste that can only be enjoyed here.

Impressions of Two Riders: The Charm and Advantages of the New Limited Express Train SPACIA X
Chia-chi shared, "The train was incredibly comfortable, despite its high speed and minimal vibrations. The exterior design, which perfectly matches the name 'X,' looked really cool. Even though I'm not a train enthusiast, I was filled with excitement! The functionality, convenience, and comfort, as well as the design of the train and its interior, were all top-notch. Among all the trains I've ridden before, this one stands out. Japanese trains are truly amazing."
Timothy also highly recommended the pleasant and comfortable ambiance of the train. He said, "From the moment I saw the New SPACIA X's sleek and beautiful design, my heart raced. The slim lines, large windows, and sophisticated atmosphere are incredibly appealing. Once I actually got on board, I found every type of seat to be comfortable. I must say, the original coffee, beer, and snacks were all delicious, so be sure to try them. I didn't want the journey to end; I wanted to stay on the train forever."
