Choosing the right transportation can make exploring Sendai and the wider Tohoku region much easier and more affordable.

For longer journeys, the JR EAST PASS (Tohoku Area) is highly recommended. It offers five consecutive days of unlimited travel on JR trains and Shinkansen services, making it an excellent value for travelers arriving from Tokyo or visiting multiple destinations across Tohoku.

For exploring the countryside, renting a car is often the most convenient option. Many of the region's highlights, including Matsushima, Akiu Great Falls, and Zao Echo Line, are easier to visit by car, especially if you plan to explore multiple destinations in a single day.

If you're staying primarily in central Sendai, public transportation is usually all you need. The city's JR lines, subway network, and buses provide convenient access to major attractions, shopping districts, and dining areas, making a rental car unnecessary for most urban sightseeing.

Sendai Umino-Mori Aquarium opens after regular hours on September 12 for Art Night Aquarium 2026, giving visitors three hours to observe and draw from the aquarium’s collection of around 300 species and 50,000 individual animals. Guests can bring colored pencils and pen-type media, digital drawing tools such as tablets, then choose their own subjects from the tanks and animal areas. Paints are not permitted, which helps protect the exhibits while still leaving plenty of room for different drawing styles. The night also includes a full set of hands-on programs and workshops lead by Sendai-based painters.

The aquarium’s Night Aquarium “IruCarnival” (a silly pun on the words dolphin+carnival) also returns from September 19 to 23. The main 7:20 PM show combines enhanced lighting, music, four bottlenose dolphins, and acrobatic performers at Umino-Mori Stadium. A separate advance ticket is required for Irucarnival, and is not included with regular daytime admission. See website for more details.

Sendai Oktoberfest returns to Nishikicho Park from September 5 to 27. Held since 2006, the festival is built around three themes: local production and consumption, Japan-Germany cultural exchange, and a harvest celebration. German and Tohoku beer and food are served around the venue, while performers from Germany and Sendai appear on the stage and cultural displays introduce Germany and the history behind the festival.

At the time of publishing, the official site has confirmed the 2026 dates and operating hours, with the vendor map and detailed stage schedule to be released later.

Pear picking at JR Fruit Park Sendai Arahama runs from August 13 through the end of October, covering most of the fall harvest season. Important to note: This is a fixed-quantity harvesting plan (not all-you-can-eat/pick!), so visitors will enter the orchard and pick approximately four to five pears for 2,000 yen, with the exact number changing according to the variety being harvested.

September also overlaps with other fruit harvests at the park (such as figs, grapes, and apples), although availability is subject to change and may vary at the time of your visit, so be sure to check the park calendar before visiting if you have a particular variety in mind.

BLUE GIANT comes back to the city where Dai Miyamoto’s story began for a PARCO2 anniversary collaboration running from September 4 to 23. The project connects the original Sendai arc of Shinichi Ishizuka’s manga with the current New York-set BLUE GIANT MOMENTUM, filling PARCO2 with reproduction manga art, character displays, photo spots, building decorations, and merchandise. A BLUE GIANT LIMITED SHOP also opens at Sendai Station’s Hare-machi Court from September 10 to 23 with exhibition goods and signed reproduction artwork.

September 12 also brings two major creator events. Ishizuka and BLUE GIANT MOMENTUM story collaborator NUMBER 8 hold a signing session for the first 50 eligible customers who spend at least 15,000 yen at the limited shop. That evening, TOHO Cinemas Sendai screens the BLUE GIANT animated film, followed by a talk with Ishizuka and Sendai-born tap dancer Kazunori Kumagai on the production and the film’s musical expression.

The collaboration also ties into the Jozenji Street Jazz Festival. After PARCO2 closes on September 13, Kumagai curates a free live set featuring pianist Mayuko Katakura, drummer Gene Jackson, bassist Yosuke Inoue, and saxophonist Tomoaki Baba. Across the September run, the project connects the manga’s Sendai setting with exhibition art, the animated film, creator appearances, and a live jazz performance.

Jozenji Beer Park keeps the rooftop of Sendai Mitsukoshi open into September, with warm bamboo lighting produced by CHIKAKEN and a food-and-drink menu built around regional ingredients. One of the featured drinks is a craft beer made with “Hope Barley” grown in Higashimatsushima, limited to one glass per guest, while the buffet includes Sanriku oysters among its seafood and other dishes.

Visitors can choose from several plans. The 45-minute Choinomi course includes a snack plate and free-flow drinks, the standard buffet course runs for 120 minutes, and higher-priced meat plans add barbecue or a 200-gram block of meat. On weekends and holidays through September 23, the rooftop opens at 4 PM and continues until 10 PM.

Osaki Hachimangu’s Grand Festival brings several of the shrine’s most important performing and procession traditions together over September 12 and 13. The first evening features the shrine’s Noh Kagura, a form long associated with the Date family, while the main day begins with the departure ceremony and mikoshi procession. The shrine’s black-lacquered portable shrine moves through the surrounding district in a procession that preserves the character of Sendai domain festival culture. The afternoon program continues with yabusame horseback archery, followed by evening festival entertainment.

The two-day Date Masamune Festival in Iwadeyama celebrates the years Masamune spent in the area before establishing his base in Sendai. The festival began in 1964, after the Date Masamune statue that had stood at the site of Sendai’s Aoba Castle was moved to Iwadeyama Castle Hill Park. Festivities begin on the eve of September 12, continuing the next day with Festival Street from 1:10 PM and the main Date Warrior Procession at 2 PM. Armored participants fill the Iwadeyama streets during the procession, recreating the military pageantry associated with the Date clan and Masamune’s early base.

Akiu Shrine’s kagura is performed on September 12 as part of the shrine’s annual grand festival. The Akiu Shrine Kagura Preservation Society performs at the shrine’s Warakuden stage from around 3 PM to 5 PM, keeping the sacred dance and music in the same religious setting in which the tradition is regularly presented. This year's program also includes a yudate hot-water ritual, adding another ceremonial element alongside the performance.

Sendai City Wild Plants Garden holds its 68th Hagi Festival from September 19 to 27, timed for the season when Miyagino hagi, or Japanese bush clover, spreads through the garden. Sendai has long been associated with Miyagino hagi, a flower celebrated in classical waka, and the festival pairs the city’s signature autumn plant with other seasonal wildflowers across the grounds. Music is part of the program as well as flower viewing, including koto and shakuhachi performances on the lawn, along with a concert by the Sendai Philharmonic.

September’s Rakuten Eagles home schedule includes several games with special programs beyond the baseball itself. On September 4 and 5, New Japan Pro-Wrestling guests appear at Rakuten Mobile Saikyo Park Miyagi: Tomoaki Honma and Oleg Boltin are scheduled for September 4, followed by NJPW president Hiroshi Tanahashi on September 5. Tanahashi’s appearance includes stage and radio segments as well as the ceremonial first pitch before the game.

The September 15 home game adds a Sendai 89ERS send-off ceremony ahead of the inaugural B.PREMIER season. 89ERS players and coaches are scheduled to appear on the field before first pitch, with Jarrett Culver and Taisei Kataoka taking part in the ceremonial pitch. Then on September 21, the first 20,000 eligible ticket holders receive a Maeken Gahaku Original T-shirt, created around pitcher Kenta Maeda’s own artwork.

Spring Valley Sendai Izumi’s Mountain Tour reopens on September 12 after its late-August maintenance period, sending participants across a seven-line zipline course on the mountain slope. The full tour takes around 90 to 120 minutes and begins with equipment fitting and safety practice before the group moves between launch points. The course includes a dual line that lets two riders depart side by side and a final long line with an open view from the mountain.

Participants must be at least 120 centimeters tall and weigh between 25 and 100 kilograms, and elementary school children must be accompanied by an adult. The resort asks guests to arrive at least 20 minutes before their start time and to wear clothes and footwear suited to active movement. The course operates in rain, with rainwear and footwear rentals available when needed.

Tour de Tohoku returns on September 20 with six cycling courses running through coastal Miyagi. The lineup ranges from the 65-kilometer Onagawa and Ogatsu Fondo and 80-kilometer Higashimatsushima Fondo to 100- and 130-kilometer routes, a 95-kilometer one-way course from Kesennuma, and the longest 180-kilometer Kesennuma Oya Coast Fondo. Around 2,400 riders are expected across the event.

Sportsland SUGO hosts Round 6 of the 2026 AUTOBACS SUPER GT championship on September 19 and 20, with official qualifying on Saturday and the SUGO GT 300km Race on Sunday. SUPER GT brings the GT500 and GT300 classes onto the same circuit, combining the fastest manufacturer-backed GT500 machines with the broader variety of cars and strategies found in GT300. SUGO’s compact, technical circuit puts the cars close to spectators and has a long reputation for producing tightly contested races. The Sendai 89ERS begin the first season of Japan’s new B.PREMIER top division at home on September 26 and 27. Their opening opponent is Akita Northern Happinets, a long-standing Tohoku rival, so the first B.PREMIER games in Sendai immediately arrive as a regional derby. Mynavi Sendai Ladies have two home dates in the 2026/27 WE League Cup group stage during September. Albirex Niigata Ladies visit Yurtec Stadium on September 19 for a 6 PM kickoff, followed by Chifure AS Elfen Saitama on September 27 at 2 PM. Sendai City Museum’s major fall special exhibition gathers more than 90 Buddhist paintings connected with Tohoku, including National Treasures, Important Cultural Properties, and works identified through recent research. The exhibition is organized around the different kinds of “power” attributed to Buddhist painting: hopes for peace and rebirth in the Pure Land, the spiritual and artistic force that drew viewers to the images, and the human effort required to create, transmit, and preserve them over centuries.

The opening weeks include a National Treasure section of the Chusonji Sutras written in gold and silver on indigo paper, while other works include a nineteenth-century Nirvana painting by Shiroishi-born Kawamura Shunyo, an Amida Twenty-Five Bodhisattvas Descent painting designated an Important Cultural Property, and a pilgrimage mandala connected with Hiraizumi. Several works rotate during the exhibition, so repeat museum-goers can expect a variation between September, October, and November visits.

Ishinomori Manga Museum marks its 100th special exhibition with the Baki Expo, the first Tohoku stop for an exhibition devoted to Keisuke Itagaki’s long-running martial arts manga series. The show approaches the Baki world through original manga manuscript pages, life-size character displays, and photo spots, giving fans a close look at both the drawn pages and the exaggerated physical presence that defines the series.

The Miyagi Museum of Art reopens its special-exhibition program in September with Kandinsky: The World Resonates, tracing Wassily Kandinsky’s career through works held in Japanese collections. The exhibition follows his development from Munich and Moscow through the Bauhaus years and Paris, showing how his use of color, line, and form changed across decades marked by major artistic movements and two world wars.

The selection includes early figurative work and later abstraction, with paintings such as Arrival of the Merchants and Three Linden Trees. The exhibition also looks at Kandinsky’s reception in Japan through Japanese artists including Tetsugoro Yorozu and Kamenosuke Ogata, with September programs including a lecture and curator talks.

Picture-book creator Shinsuke Yoshitake’s first large-scale exhibition opens in Miyagi on September 26, bringing together more than 400 items connected with the way he develops ideas. Tiny sketches that later became books sit alongside original picture-book artwork, three-dimensional objects made for the exhibition, student-era work, and objects from Yoshitake’s own collection. The touring show passed one million visitors in 2025, and the Miyagi venue at Tohoku Fukushi University Gallery Mini Mori runs without scheduled closed days through November 8.

THE WAKEY AQUARIUM: Sea Colorful Party continues through October 18 with a collaboration built around the colors and movement of the aquarium’s animals. One of the main programs is a special version of Sparkling of Life in the large Inochi Kirameku Umi tank, where around 25,000 sardines move as a coordinated school to music from THE WAKEY SHOW.

The collaboration also includes a colorful stamp rally around the aquarium, with a B6 mini notebook awarded to visitors who complete it, plus themed photo spots, food, and merchandise. The large tank itself contains around 30,000 animals from roughly 50 species, placing the color-themed collaboration directly among the aquarium’s regular marine displays.

Yakurai Garden’s Halloween Fair covers the grounds with pumpkin and mushroom objects from late August through November 3. The decorations are set among the garden’s autumn displays, including Fururu no Oka, which the venue describes as one of Tohoku’s largest flower fields.

The Halloween period also overlaps with Hoshi Akari, Yakurai Garden’s seasonal light-up event, so the garden can be seen in both its daytime flower setting and illuminated evening form during the same autumn season. The venue calls this its most colorful time of year, with Halloween objects, flowers, and lighting all appearing all across the grounds!

Sendai PARCO2’s rooftop hosts three drink, food, and music events in October, beginning with the third Latin Caribbean Cocktail Party on October 4. Top bartenders from Sendai and around Tohoku create more than 15 original cocktails around Latin American and Caribbean spirits, alongside spirit and liqueur tastings, cocktail-making workshops, Mexican goods, and food stalls.

MIYAGI SAKE SESSION follows on October 17 under the Miyagi Sake Brewers Association, combining local sake with music, cocktails, and food. The event is designed to introduce Miyagi sake to newer drinkers, with a discounted U39 ticket category announced as part of the format. The National Gyoza Festival brings famous regional dumpling styles from across Japan to Kotodai Park Temporary Plaza on October 3 and 4. The event specifically highlights well-known gyoza areas such as Utsunomiya and Hamamatsu alongside Sendai’s own Aoba Gyoza, giving visitors a chance to compare different fillings, wrappers, cooking styles, and regional approaches in one central venue. Admission to the festival is free, with individual dishes available for purchase from the stalls. The Saturday program runs from 10 AM to 6 PM and Sunday from 10 AM to 5 PM, giving visitors two full days to work through the regional gyoza lineup!

The Sendai Michinoku YOSAKOI Festival fills central Sendai with two days of dance on October 10 and 11, with YOSAKOI teams competing and performing across multiple venues while guest performers, non-YOSAKOI groups, and festival booths add to the program. The event spreads across parks and public spaces around central Sendai, with a grand parade along Jozenji-dori. General viewing areas are available throughout the festival, with paid seating available along the route.

Higashimatsushima holds its first Autumn Festival on October 3 around the Higashimatsushima Chamber of Commerce building. The city officially moved the event into October for 2026 and scheduled it immediately before the Matsushima Air Base Air Festival on October 4 (introduced below), creating a full two-day event for a weekend in Higashimatsushima. At the time of publishing, the city has confirmed the date and main venue, with detailed program TBD. Please check official website for updates and final schedule.

Shiroishi Castle becomes the stage for the 19th Oni Kojuro Festival on October 3, centered on a large historical battle reenactment involving around 120 armored participants. The performance recreates the clash at Domyoji during the Osaka Summer Campaign, focusing on Katakura Shigenaga, heir to the Katakura family of Shiroishi, and Sanada Yukimura. Matchlock gunfire, archery, ninja action, and close combat are incorporated into the reenactment, putting the historical episode into motion directly in front of the reconstructed castle!

Akiu Taue Odori is registered by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage and is also nationally designated in Japan. In the Nagafukuro form, saotome dancers perform in a line in formal costume, while the tradition preserves songs, gestures, and performance elements that developed around agricultural celebration and local popular theater. The Nagafukuro preservation society presents the rice-planting dance inside the temple’s main hall on October 12, continuing one of the three surviving Akiu Taue Odori traditions as part of the Komatsu Amida Nyorai festival in Kosenji.

Spring Valley Sendai Izumi’s seven-line Mountain Tour runs throughout October before the green-season program closes in early November. The complete Mountain Tour takes around 90 to 120 minutes, while the lighter four-line course takes about an hour.

The full 2026 flight, ground-display, entry, or transportation program are still TBD at the time of publishing, so be sure to check the official Air Festival page as the date approaches.

Sendai Classical Festival, better known as Sencla, celebrates its 20th edition with 77 concerts across eight venues in three cultural facilities. Programs run from morning into evening and are designed in compact 45- or 60-minute formats, letting visitors build their own day from orchestral, chamber, and solo performances.

The 2026 artist roster ranges from young performers to established musicians, including laureates of the Sendai International Music Competition and members of the Sendai Philharmonic. Related free concerts are also planned at locations including Sendai Station and Asahigaoka over the festival weekend, so be sure to check the full schedule for more details.

Vegalta Sendai October Home Matches
Vegalta Sendai has four home fixtures at Yurtec Stadium in October, beginning with Jubilo Iwata on October 4 and continuing with Tokushima Vortis, FC Imabari, and RB Omiya Ardija. The super popular Pokémon x Crafts exhibit is now coming to the Tohoku History Museum! On October 10, you can see crafts from beloved series, created with contemporary Japanese craft techniques in ceramics, textiles, lacquer, metalwork, and other media. The exhibition was a big hit in Aichi, and is supervised by the National Crafts Museum with works by established masters and young artists, each approaching Pokémon through a different material and making process.

The Miyagi run is divided into a first half through November 15 and a second half from November 17 to December 27, with some works changing between the two periods. October also brings the first Pikachu photo session on October 22, featuring Pikachu dressed in traditional kimono. Photo session is free with exhibition tickets, but requires advance registration and is limited to 20 groups per session.

October is the only full month of Sendai City Museum’s Buddhist painting exhibition, with the selection changes significantly as the month progresses. The National Treasure Chusonji Sutras rotate in early October, while the Important Cultural Property Amida Twenty-Five Bodhisattvas Descent remains on display through October 18. From October 20, later rotations introduce the Important Cultural Property Kumano Gongen image and an embroidered Amida triad from Fukushima. Across the full exhibition, more than 90 works explore Buddhist painting from Tohoku and related collections through themes of prayer, Pure Land belief, sacred imagery, and the people who created and preserved the works.

Sendai City Museum of History and Folklore holds the first day of Rekimin Autumn Festival 2026 on October 24, with the museum and neighboring Tsutsujigaoka Park used for a day of folk culture and outdoor festival activity. The annual event has long featured Tohoku folk performing arts and demonstrations by traditional craftspeople, including forms such as kagura, taue odori, shishi odori, kenbai, Sendai tansu making, and kokeshi craftsmanship.

At the time of publishing, the museum has confirmed the October 24 event, but the detailed performing-arts and craft lineup is still being finalized, so check the official museum calendar before visiting.

Tenshukaku Nature Park begins its Akiu Night Museum season on October 23, illuminating the Koyatate-ato Garden after dark through November 23. The strolling garden contains more than 500 maples along with ponds, koi, local Akiu stone, and carefully arranged water and rock features. Garden paths and scenery are illuminated from 4:30 PM to 9 PM, with last entry at 8:30 PM. The event continues for the full month, covering the changing foliage from late October into the November holiday period.

October is the final month for Kandinsky: The World Resonates at the Miyagi Museum of Art, with the exhibition closing on October 28. Works from Japanese collections trace Kandinsky from the figurative paintings of his Munich years into the geometric language of the Bauhaus period and the freer forms of his Paris work, allowing the stylistic changes to be followed across several decades in one exhibition. Curator talks are scheduled during October, and the museum is open on the October 12 holiday before closing on October 13.

Shinsuke Yoshitake’s exhibition remains open throughout October at Tohoku Fukushi University Gallery Mini Mori. More than 400 items move from tiny everyday sketches to finished picture-book art, three-dimensional objects, student work, and pieces Yoshitake has collected himself, tracing the small observations and visual ideas that feed into his books. The exhibition also reflects Yoshitake’s background before his 2013 picture-book debut, when he worked as an illustrator and three-dimensional artist.

The Sakunami and Jogi Retreat Bus Tour runs through November 30, linking several of western Sendai’s major sightseeing stops in a single reserved bus route. After collecting passengers from Sakunami-area hotels and JR Sakunami Station, the bus stops for about 75 minutes at Nikka Whisky Miyagikyo Distillery, pauses at Homei Shijuhachitaki Falls, passes Okura Dam, and then allows about 90 minutes for a free visit to Jogi Nyorai Saihoji before arriving at Sendai Station.

The service is aimed at both overnight guests in Sakunami and day-trippers, operating on most days except Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Since the route finishes at JR Sendai Station in the afternoon, it provides a direct way to visit the distillery, mountain scenery, dam area, and temple without having to plan separate trips or transfers between each stop.

Miyagi’s Lapras dam-card campaign enters its final season from September 19 through November 23, with four participating dams in 2026: Sendai Environmental Development Okura Dam, Hanayama Dam, Pacific Consultants Naganuma Dam, and the newly added Minamikawa Dam. Visitors first take a photo with the Lapras panel installed at a participating dam, then show the image at the designated office to receive a holographic premium dam card.

The campaign has been running since 2021 and has recorded 15,528 participants to date, promoting and encouraging visits to the local dams. Showing the premium card at cooperating businesses also unlocks local benefits, such as discounts or small gifts at participating cafes, shops, and restaurants. Cards are limited to one per person and may run out before the official end date, so availability should be checked before making a special trip.

The Fukuoka Shishi Odori and Kenbai Preservation Society performs at Washikura Shrine on November 3 as part of the shrine’s annual Culture Day festival. The program brings two local folk performing forms, shishi odori (deer dance) and kenbai (sword dance), together in a single presentation on the shrine grounds. While the performance is included in the city’s annual public schedule of folk performing arts, details are subject to change, so please check the official website for any last-minute updates before visiting.

Shiogama Shrine marks the harvest thanksgiving season on November 23 with Niinamesai and the public Hatsuhobiki procession. The shrine’s own rice is planted in May and harvested during the September Nukiho-sai; for Hatsuhobiki, that newly harvested rice is loaded together with locally donated products onto a ceremonial cart and pulled through the city by shrine parishioners and participants.

At the shrine, the Niinamesai gives thanks for the year’s harvest, while Shiogama’s associated Shiwahiko Shrine presents the sacred Asahiko-mai dance. The shrine has also invited members of the public to volunteer as pullers in the Hatsuhobiki procession without a participation fee. Presented by the Sakaki-ryu Aoso Kagura Preservation Society, the Sakaki-ryu Aoso Kagura is a sacred dance and will be performed at Aoso Shrine on November 23 in connection with the shrine’s annual Niinamesai. The timing links with the agricultural thanksgiving rite held on the same day, and Sendai City lists it as one of the scheduled public presentations of the city’s folk performing arts for 2026. SENDAI Luminact returns to Aobayama Park on November 14 and 15, transforming the area below the Sendai Castle ruins into an evening activity space from 4 PM to 9 PM. The 2026 November page confirms the event’s signature night hot-air-balloon experience, along with tuk-tuk rides, soap-bubble activities, Gororoll, handheld fireworks, and illuminated tents.

Admission to the grounds is free, while food and selected activities are paid. The night balloon requires advance reservations, and the venue is about a seven-minute walk from International Center Station. Visitors are encouraged to use public transportation when possible as parking can become congested during the event.

November 3 is the final day of Spring Valley Sendai Izumi’s green-season zipline program, leaving only the first few days of the month for one last run across the mountain course. The full Mountain Tour uses seven lines and takes around 90 to 120 minutes from briefing and practice through the final crossings, while the shorter Light Tour uses four lines in roughly an hour. Vegalta Sendai November Home Match Run
Vegalta Sendai’s November home run includes Ventforet Kofu, Blaublitz Akita, and Montedio Yamagata. The last two fixtures put Sendai against Tohoku opponents on consecutive home dates, with the November 29 match against Yamagata bringing another edition of the Michinoku Derby to Yurtec Stadium.

Mynavi Sendai Ladies November Home Matches
Mynavi Sendai Ladies have two November league fixtures at Yurtec Stadium, both on Saturdays at 2 PM. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Urawa Reds Ladies visit on November 7, followed by Cerezo Osaka Yanmar Ladies on November 21.

The first display period of the Tohoku History Museum’s Pokémon x Crafts exhibit ends November 15, closing for its regular on November 16 before reopening for the second half on November 17 with selected works changed. The exhibition continues to pair familiar Pokémon with Japanese craft materials and techniques across ceramics, textiles, lacquer, metalwork, and other forms.

Two related programs also fall in November. On November 14, artists Takuro Kuwata and Reiko Sudo discuss how they each approached Pikachu through very different craft methods, with the 280-seat talk free to exhibition ticket holders who reserve in advance. On November 23, Pikachu appears in traditional kimono for three photo sessions, each limited to 20 groups and requiring advance registration.

The second day of Rekimin Autumn Festival 2026 takes place on Culture Day, November 3, inside the Sendai City Museum of History and Folklore. The annual festival introduces Tohoku folk performing arts and traditional craftsmanship through live presentations, with past programs featuring kagura, taue odori, shishi odori, kenbai, Sendai tansu work, and kokeshi making. November is the final month of Akiu Night Museum, with the illuminated Koyatate-ato Garden open through the November 23 holiday. More than 500 maples surround the garden’s ponds, koi, local Akiu stone, and water features, giving the night lighting a layered landscape of leaves, reflections, rock, and moving water. The event runs from 4:30 PM to 9 PM, with last entry at 8:30 PM. Since the garden’s appearance changes as the leaves progress through the season, visitors in early and late November may see quite different colors even as the lighting remains in place through the final night.

The Miyagi Museum of Art shifts to contemporary art in November with the exhibit, Now, I Encounter Contemporary Art. This exhibition is drawn from the collection assembled by a single private collector and brings together internationally recognized names including Yayoi Kusama, Yoshitomo Nara, Takashi Murakami, and Andy Warhol. The show also includes Shinro Ohtake, whose Retina/Pulsar 1 is featured in the museum’s annual exhibition schedule. The private collection places Japanese postwar and contemporary artists alongside major international figures, and continues through January 24, 2027.

November 8 is the final day of Shinsuke Yoshitake’s Miyagi exhibition, leaving just over a week for November visitors to see the more than 400 sketches, original drawings, objects, and personal materials gathered at Gallery Mini Mori. The small idea sketches are especially central to the show, revealing the observations and thought experiments that later develop into his picture books. The popular exhibition has remains open continuously through the final Sunday, having exceeded one million visitors in its 2025 run before arriving in Miyagi this fall.
