Getting Around Aomori and the Tohoku Region

Choosing the right transportation can save both time and money when exploring Aomori in summer.

For long-distance travel, the JR East Pass is one of the best options. It offers five consecutive days of unlimited travel on JR trains and Shinkansen services, and often pays for itself with a single round trip between Tokyo and Aomori.

For local sightseeing, renting a car is highly recommended. While cities like Aomori City, Hirosaki, and Hachinohe are easy to reach by train, scenic spots such as Lake Towada, Moya Hills, and Mount Osore are much easier to access by car.

A practical strategy is to use the JR East Pass to reach Shin-Aomori Station or Hachinohe Station, then pick up a rental car for exploring the region's countryside.

Traditional Japanese Festivals and Events

Utou Shrine: Sanko Inari Shrine Eve Festival / Ryujingu Eve Festival

Aomori City's historic Utou Shrine holds several traditional festivals every year, including the Sanko Inari Shrine Eve Festival and Ryujingu Eve Festival, held this year on June 9–10 and June 16–17, respectively.

The Sanko Inari Shrine Eve Festival is one of the first evening festivals in the city's summer festival line up. Food stalls fill the grounds, and a beer garden adds a relaxed early-summer atmosphere, drawing local residents and visitors into a lively mix of tradition and community socializing.

The Ryujingu Eve Festival is dedicated to the deity of water and safety at sea, giving it significant meaning for a port city shaped by shipping and fishing. Lantern light, festival music, and the atmosphere of the yomiya evening create a distinctly Aomori summer night centered on maritime faith and local feeling.

Aomori Museum of Art: THE ORNAMENTED SOUL A Universe of Ornaments Across the Euro-Asian World From Jomon and Celtic Art to Nebuta Design

The Aomori Museum of Art exhibit, “THE ORNAMENTED SOUL A Universe of Ornaments Across the Euro-Asian World From Jomon and Celtic Art to Nebuta Design,” looks at humanity's long-standing impulse toward decoration. The exhibition draws connections between Jomon pottery, intricate Celtic spiral designs, and the vivid decorative patterns seen in Aomori Nebuta. By approaching art through cultural anthropology as well as visual design, it offers a challenging way to think about ornament across time and regions.

Aomori Fireworks Festival and Nebuta Marine Procession

The Aomori Fireworks Festival and Nebuta Marine Procession close out the festival on August 7 in what is perhaps the most memorable scene of the week. After the daytime nebuta procession, the celebration moves to Aomori Port where the award-winning floats are carried across the water as the dynamic fireworks display launches right above. Free viewing is possible, however the waterfront gets very crowded, so we recommend arriving early, or checking out the paid seating options to guarantee your comfort.

Asamushi Onsen Nebuta Festival, Mid-August Procession

The mid-August Asamushi Nebuta Festival brings another wave of festival energy to the Asamushi Onsen streets with its smaller, local nebuta procession, giving visitors another chance to experience the celebration after the main event. During the Obon travel season, hotel guests and visitors can still enjoy the music, rent costumes, and join as haneto dancers themselves. The scale is more intimate than Aomori Nebuta, but that’s part of the draw: after the festiities, you can head back to your ryokan or hotel to unwind after reliving the excitement.
