What is the romantic train in Kyoto?
The Sagano Romantic Train, or Sagano Torokko in Japanese, is a scenic sightseeing train that was originally built as a small freight train. Today, it has become one of Kyoto's most popular attractions, offering visitors a unique opportunity to experience the region's natural beauty in a nostalgic and picturesque way.
The train's route runs along the Hozugawa River, one of its most stunning features. Winding through lush landscapes and along steep cliffs, it offers passengers breathtaking views of the gorge, which showcases Kyoto’s ever-changing beauty throughout the seasons.
The train itself has a charming vintage appeal, with its classic color scheme and Art Deco design.
Which car is best for the Sagano Romantic Train?
Car No. 5, known as "The Rich," is particularly beloved by visitors. This open-air car, with its wooden benches and bare light bulbs, allows passengers to fully immerse themselves in the journey, feeling the breeze and warmth of the sun while taking in the stunning views of Kyoto's countryside.
Riding the Sagano Romantic Train offers an enchanting and memorable experience, combining history, nature, and a touch of old-world charm.
The Sagano Romantic Train covers a 7.3-kilometer route, running from Torokko Saga Station to Torokko Kameoka Station, taking around 25 minutes.
Along the way, the train makes additional stops at Torokko Arashiyama Station and Hozukyo Torokko Station, giving passengers the flexibility to board or disembark at any station. Despite the option to stop at different stations, the fare remains consistent regardless of where passengers choose to get off.
Hozukyo Torokko Station, in particular, is located in a stunning natural setting, nestled within the Kyoto Prefectural Hozukyo Natural Park. This makes it a popular stop for those who want to take in the area’s pristine beauty, known for its lush landscapes and tranquil atmosphere. Visitors often choose to explore this scenic location as part of their journey on the Sagano Romantic Train.
How to get to Sagano Scenic Railway
Saga Torokko Station serves as both the origin and destination of the Sagano Romantic Train ride. It is conveniently located adjacent to the JR Saga-Arashiyama Station, making it easily accessible from JR Kyoto Station.
As a result, Saga Torokko Station is the busiest stop among all stations on the route, attracting a high volume of visitors.
- From JR Kyoto Station: Take JR Sagano Line to JR Saga-Arashiyama Station, use South Exit. (240 yen one-way; approx. 17 min.) View directions here.
- From Shijo and Karasuma: Take Kyoto Municipal Subway from Shijo or Karasuma Station to Kyoto Station; transfer to JR Sagano Line to JR Saga-Arashiyama Station; use South Exit. (420 yen one-way; approx 20-32 min.) View directions here.

How to get tickets for the Sagano Romantic Train
All tickets for the Sagano Romantic Train are assigned to designated seats and cannot be used for alighting at other stops along the route.
You have the option of buying tickets in advance or getting them on the day of your ride. For advance tickets, you can make a purchase starting from midnight, one month before your travel date, through the "Ticket Reservation and Purchase" page on the official website. This page is available in Japanese, English, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, and Korean.
If you're looking to buy tickets on the same day, head over to the ticket counters at any of the Sagano Romantic Train stations, except for the Hozukyo Station.
For same-day tickets, purchase them at the station window. Note, however, that in the peak season (such as in spring for cherry blossoms and autumn for foliage), there can be long lines, and tickets sell out quickly. The best way to ensure you have a seat is to book ahead.
Also note that the Sagano Romantic Train is not covered under the Japan Rail Pass.
For same-day Sagano Romantic Train tickets, please pay in cash or IC card payment (such as ICOCA or Suica) only.
- Valid Cards: ICOCA, Suica, toica, PASMO
- Unusable Cards/Passes: PiTaPa, credit card, debit card, Japan Rail Pass, Seishun 18 Ticket

What's at Saga Torokko Station?
Not only can you buy tickets at Saga Torokko Station, but you can also shop for souvenirs and enjoy a meal while waiting for your train. Kyoto's climate can be pretty hot in the summer and cold in the winter, so it's a great place to take a break!
Behind the station, you'll find several shops: one that sells matcha sweets, one with unique Kyoto souvenirs, and one with original Sagano Romantic Train goodies. Why not stop by for a little souvenir shopping?
Next to the shop is a cafe called SL ROMAN CAFE, where you can sip coffee, tea, soft drinks, and even alcohol while checking out the steam locomotive display. If you're hungry, try some curry rice, a sandwich, or a parfait!
Further past the shop is Diorama Kyoto JAPAN, one of the largest railway dioramas in all of western Japan. There is also a souvenir shop and a food corner serving ramen and light meals. It's a great spot for a break!
The station building is also equipped with English- and Chinese-speaking touch panels for tourist information and foreign currency exchange machines. Foreigners can use the station with peace of mind.
