Where to See Fireworks in Osaka & Kansai (July–October 2025)
- Written by: LIVE JAPAN's editorial team
Planning a summer trip to the Kansai region, including Osaka and Kyoto? You’re in for a seasonal highlight—this is one of the best times to catch fireworks festivals across western Japan. From the historic Tenjin Festival Fireworks in Osaka to the stylish Minato HANABI in Kobe, events will be held throughout the region from July into October.
One key change this year: the popular Naniwa Yodogawa Fireworks Festival has been rescheduled from August to October due to preparations for the Osaka Kansai Expo. This shift offers visitors a wider window to enjoy Kansai’s vibrant fireworks culture, which ranges from traditional riverside displays to modern shows synchronized with music.
Set aside an evening or two to take in these events. With cooler night temperatures, festival foods, and dazzling fireworks, it’s a memorable way to experience Japan in summer. Below are the key details to help you plan.

Japanese Fireworks Culture

Fireworks have a long history in Japan, but they truly became a popular spectator event during the Edo period (1603-1868).
Today, fireworks displays are held all over the country every year, including the "Big Three Fireworks Festivals," which are considered among Japan's most spectacular.
Many festivals take place in the summer, often on the last day of a matsuri (festival) or as standalone events. If you're planning a summer trip to Japan, it's a great idea to time your visit to coincide with one!
By the way, the photo above was taken by the author last year (2024) during a trip to Okinawa. My travel dates luckily overlapped with a fireworks festival, and I was fortunate enough to witness it.

Osaka: Tenjin Festival Dedication Fireworks

Held as the grand finale to the Tenjin Matsuri—one of Japan’s three major festivals—this fireworks display is a signature summer event in Osaka. Around 3,000 fireworks are launched over the Okawa River, where more than 100 illuminated boats parade below. The combination of fire in the sky and movement on the water creates what’s often called a “festival of fire and water.” It’s a striking spectacle that captures the energy and tradition of summer in Osaka.
