Fireworks have a long history in Japan, but they truly became a popular spectator event during the Edo period (1603-1868).

Today, fireworks displays are held all over the country every year, including the "Big Three Fireworks Festivals," which are considered among Japan's most spectacular.

Many festivals take place in the summer, often on the last day of a matsuri (festival) or as standalone events. If you're planning a summer trip to Japan, it's a great idea to time your visit to coincide with one!

By the way, the photo above was taken by the author last year (2024) during a trip to Okinawa. My travel dates luckily overlapped with a fireworks festival, and I was fortunate enough to witness it.

Held as the grand finale to the Tenjin Matsuri—one of Japan’s three major festivals—this fireworks display is a signature summer event in Osaka. Around 3,000 fireworks are launched over the Okawa River, where more than 100 illuminated boats parade below. With its open space and scenic backdrop, it’s a more relaxed and romantic alternative to the bigger city events.

Kicking off the summer season in Wakayama, this fireworks show takes place at Wakayama Marina City, a seaside resort area. The event combines ocean views with synchronized fireworks and music, creating a dramatic display over the water. It’s a great choice for those seeking a more relaxed coastal setting to enjoy summer hanabi.

One of the largest fireworks events in the Kansai region, this festival takes full advantage of the expansive setting of Lake Biwa. Thousands of fireworks are launched over the water in a wide-reaching, high-impact display. With an estimated 350,000 visitors each year, it’s a major summer highlight—so plan ahead if you want a good viewing spot.

Set along the Hozu River, this festival with around 13,000 fireworks blends traditional summer celebration with Kyoto’s natural beauty. Surrounded by forested hills and river views, the setting offers a cooler, more tranquil atmosphere than city-based events. It’s an ideal way to enjoy fireworks in a more relaxed and scenic environment.

Set along the Yoshino River, this traditional fireworks festival offers a peaceful alternative to larger urban events. Surrounded by Nara’s gentle natural scenery, it’s a calm and reflective way to enjoy summer fireworks—perfect for those seeking a quieter evening outdoors.

This coastal festival blends two iconic summer traditions—lantern floating and fireworks. As hundreds of lanterns are released onto the water in a symbolic ceremony, fireworks illuminate the sky above, creating a serene and memorable scene. Held in the seaside town of Miyazu, near Amanohashidate, it’s a unique cultural experience that captures the spirit of summer in Japan.

Held at Wakayama Marina City, this short-format fireworks show offers a burst of color against the ocean backdrop. Though the display lasts just around 10 minutes, it’s a visually striking experience and a great addition to your visit if you’re already exploring the area. The seaside setting adds to the charm, making it a quick but memorable stop in Wakayama.

Traditionally held in summer, this major event has been rescheduled to autumn in 2025 due to preparations for the Osaka Kansai Expo. Known as a “handmade” fireworks festival, it’s organized with the support of local volunteers and has become one of the most anticipated displays in the region. With around 450,000 spectators, it’s a large-scale celebration, but the cooler autumn temperatures make for a more comfortable viewing experience.

Held over five consecutive evenings at Meriken Park, this modern fireworks event offers a stylish take on the traditional festival. Each night, a brief but carefully choreographed fireworks show runs from 6:30 PM to 6:45 PM, synchronized with music and set against the backdrop of Kobe Port’s illuminated skyline. The combination of waterfront views, music, and pyrotechnics creates a romantic and elegant atmosphere unique to Kobe.

If you're traveling in the Kansai region, we highly recommend taking some time to immerse yourself in the beautiful charm of traditional Japanese fireworks festivals. You might stumble upon one by chance, but if you're interested, it's best to plan your travel itinerary carefully with plenty of time.
