Before traveling to the greater Tokyo area in April, know what the weather is going to be like! Below were the actual weather conditions in Tokyo for April 2018 to help give you an idea of how the weather will be during your trip to Japan.
Weather in Tokyo during the first week in April
The delightful springtime temperatures are expected to continue, with daily highs in the mid-20s°C (70s°F). However, the sunny skies at the beginning of the week look to turn cloudy, with rain in the forecast for Friday and Saturday. With this wind and rain, it is expected that a large majority of the lingering blossoms in Tokyo will be washed away, so be sure to get outside and enjoy!
Weather in Tokyo during the second week in April
The delightful springtime temperatures are expected to continue, with daily highs staying in the mid-20s°C (70s°F). Although the beginning of the week is looking to be quite pleasant, it is expected to turn cloudy and rain around the weekend.
Weather in Tokyo during the third week in April
Tokyo has some very summery weather in store this week! Spring has fully bloomed in the greater Tokyo area, welcoming in flowers in the city’s many gardens and parks.
Despite the somewhat chillier temperatures over the weekend, crowds of people filled the major tourist areas in Tokyo, with many sporting short-sleeved shirts and lightweight spring clothes.
Weather in Tokyo during the fourth week in April
Although the warm weather is expected to continue, clouds are expected to be sticking around until the weekend, with rain forecast for Wednesday. Daytime highs are in the low 20s (lower 70s), with evening lows in the mid-teens (upper 50s/low 60s).
The majority of people around town seem to be still dressing in layers, with short-sleeved shirts and a light jacket or long-sleeved shirt tied around the waist. Although some had been wearing shorts over the weekend, most people are now wearing jeans or slacks.
When traveling to Tokyo in late April, you may want to keep a portable umbrella handy.
What is there to see in Tokyo in April?
As for the cherry blossoms: as mentioned above, many of Tokyo’s trees have been shedding their petals in extremely photogenic moments as sakura snow. While the blossoms can still be seen in several areas, peak bloom has passed Tokyo and the sakura wave is heading north.
To see where you can still catch the cherry blossoms in bloom, check out the link below.
Nemophilia coming into bloom at Hitachi Seaside Park!
Sakura aren't the only flowers to see this season! Head out around two hours northeast to catch the nemophila, canola flowers and tulips in bloom at Hitachi Seaside Park in Ibaraki Prefecture. Nemophila are colored nearly the same shade as the sky, making for stunning photographs when the fluffy clouds drift over.
Enjoying Spring in Enoshima!
You may be able to catch the last of the cherry blossoms at Enoshima, a small island immediately west of historical Kamakura City. While the pale-white Yoshino cherry blossoms are likely all but gone in most parts of the greater Tokyo area, Yaezakura (which are multi-layered cherry blossoms) are heading toward peak bloom. Although Yaezakura typically do not have as much of a presence as their 5-petaled kin, they tend to bloom slightly later in the season, lasting in some areas up until late April.
The gorgeous (if somewhat breezy) weather will make for a very enjoyable hike around the island, and you should be able to see several Yaezakura trees in bloom, along with tulips, pansies, and several other floral varieties around the island alight in color.
In spring and summer, Mt. Fuji is often known a “shy mountain,” owing to the cloud cover which builds as humidity levels rise, hiding the familiar figure from view. Although the mountain can still be spotted peeking out from the clouds early in the morning and around sunset.
Also, with wisteria now reaching peak bloom in the greater Tokyo area, popular spots are seeing crowds of tourists and photographers.
Head to Kameido Tenjin Shrine, one of the more popular areas for wisteria in Tokyo, to catch the purple flowers.
Beneath the several wisteria trellises is a large pond, bisected by two drum bridges, in which a number of turtles can be seen swimming about or sunning themselves on top of stones. Also in this season are a number of food stall vendors, or yattai, making and selling a variety of tasty treats, from yakitori and takoyaki to cotton candy.
With the wisteria expected to last until around May 5, be sure to drop by and give it a go for yourself!
What clothes should I take to Japan in April?
The warm, sunny spring weather will continue during the day, though evenings will see dips into the 10s (50s), so a spring jacket and warm outerwear are recommended. During the beginning of the week, sunscreen and sunglasses are a good idea to keep on hand as well. Around town, you can see many people wearing short-sleeved shirts and carrying light jackets on their arms.
During late April in Tokyo, expect daytime highs staying in the upper 20s (upper 70s/low 80s), with some varying degree of rain. Generally it's quite lovely weather.
In late April, the majority of people around town seem to be still dressing in layers, with short-sleeved shirts and a light jacket or long-sleeved shirt tied around the waist.
