- Written by: Nemi Lin
Sendai City, located in Miyagi Prefecture in Japan’s Tohoku region, sits at a relatively high latitude, so winters are cold with average temperatures below 5°C (41°F). Surprisingly, however, snow accumulation is light compared to places like Hokkaido or Aomori, making it an easy destination to explore without worrying too much about icy roads or slipping on snow.
During the season, you can visit the Zao Mountain Range on the border of Miyagi and Yamagata Prefectures to see the breathtaking snow monsters, soak in the relaxing hot springs of Naruko Onsen, or stop by the famous Miyagi Zao Fox Village to see its adorable residents up close.
When it comes to food, Sendai is known for its incredible seafood. The city sits near the meeting point of the Oyashio and Kuroshio currents, creating some of Japan’s richest fishing grounds. Fresh oysters, sea urchin, and other seafood are a must-try, as is Sendai’s signature mizuna hot pot. If you’re ready to enjoy Sendai’s winter scenery and flavors, read on for my weather guide and outfit advice to help you stay warm and comfortable throughout your trip.

What Is Miyagi’s Winter Weather Like (December–February)?
Miyagi Prefecture is located in Japan’s Tohoku region, with Sendai City—its capital—being the largest city in the area. Set on a coastal plain facing the Pacific Ocean, Sendai enjoys relatively clear weather throughout the year, making it a pleasant destination for sightseeing in any season. Because of its mild coastal climate, Sendai is often one of the first stops for travelers exploring northern Japan.
Compared with other parts of Tohoku, Sendai’s winters are relatively mild, though the cold sea breeze keeps temperatures low, especially from December through February. Light snowfall is possible, but sunny days are common. For visitors from warmer regions, the chill can still feel intense even on clear days, so winter clothing and cold-weather accessories are essential. Dressing in layers is the best way to adjust to changing indoor and outdoor temperatures.
In the next section, I’ll share my own winter outfit examples and tips—perfect for staying warm and comfortable during your trip to Sendai.

The good news is that precipitation is relatively low, making it a great time to enjoy outdoor sightseeing without worrying about rain.
Snowfall in Sendai is rare in December, and when it does occur, it usually doesn’t accumulate. If you want to see proper snow, head to higher elevations such as the Zao area, where you’ll have a better chance of experiencing snowy scenery. For those renting a car, be sure to confirm that your vehicle comes equipped with snow tires and winter gear for safe driving.

- Adults
- Layer up with long-sleeved tops, pants or long skirts, heat-tech innerwear, thick coats, fleece-lined leggings, snow boots, knit hats, and scarves. These essentials will keep you warm and comfortable when exploring both the city and outdoor attractions.
- Children
- Dress children in similar winter layers, including long sleeves, pants, heat-tech shirts, thick jackets, snow boots, hats, and scarves, to keep them cozy and protected from the cold.

The event features special displays and performances each year, so be sure to check it out while you’re in town.
