If you're planning a day trip to ski resort from Tokyo by Shinkansen (bullet train), GALA Yuzawa Ski Resort is a convenient option. It's the only ski resort in Japan with its own dedicated Shinkansen station, "GALA Yuzawa Station," and is approximately 71 minutes from Tokyo Station. The ski center is right outside the ticket gate, eliminating the need to transfer to a bus or carry heavy luggage. Rentals and lockers are also available in a building directly connected to the station, so you can go empty-handed. The 2026-27 season will open on December 19th and will be open until May 5th, 2027. This article will cover the operating period, lift ticket prices, directions from Tokyo, changes for this season, and ways to enjoy the resort even if you don't ski.

Quick answer: For the 2026-27 season, GALA Yuzawa opens for skiing on Saturday, December 19, 2026, with slopes scheduled to run until Wednesday, May 5, 2027 (a national holiday). It is about 71 minutes from Tokyo Station by Joetsu Shinkansen at the fastest, and one of the few ski resorts in Japan where you step out of the ticket gate and straight into the ski center. A 1-day lift ticket costs 8,000 yen for adults (7,500 yen online). Note that for 2026-27, the South Area and the ropeway to Yuzawa Kogen are closed; skiing runs in the Central and North Areas.
For a day trip from Tokyo, a package that bundles a reserved Shinkansen seat with a lift ticket is the easiest option. You can lock in your round-trip seats and lift ticket in advance with a single booking.

Changes for the 2026-27 season: The South Area and the "Landau" cable car will be closed.
For the 2026-27 season, the South Area is closed, and the resort operates only the runs in the Central and North Areas. The Lando ropeway, which used to connect GALA Yuzawa with Yuzawa Kogen Ski Resort, is also suspended, so you can no longer ski over to Yuzawa Kogen as in previous seasons. If you are planning your trip based on information from past seasons, please keep these changes in mind.
| Closed Facility | Details | Impact |
|---|---|---|
| South Area | Four runs ("2.6 Million Dollar," "Bronco," "Eliza," and "Batman") and the "Wagonette" pair lift | Skiing runs in the Central and North Areas |
| Lando Ropeway | Ropeway connecting GALA Yuzawa with Yuzawa Kogen Ski Resort | Use the shuttle bus to travel to Yuzawa Kogen |
*Based on the official GALA Yuzawa announcement of September 15, 2026. Advanced skiers who were hoping for ungroomed runs or powder may also want to consider nearby resorts such as Naeba and Kagura.
Go empty-handed: Rentals, lockers, and foreign language lessons available.

The ski center, directly connected to the station, has ski and snowboard gear rental, clothing rental, lockers, changing rooms, and a luggage delivery and storage counter. You can arrive by Shinkansen with nothing but yourself and start skiing right away.
The ski school also offers lessons in foreign languages, which makes GALA Yuzawa a good choice for international visitors trying skiing for the first time. If you are staying in Yuzawa for several nights, you can also rent gear for multiple days at a rental shop in town.

When does the 2026-27 season start and end? Operating period calendar
The season at Gala Yuzawa begins with a week of "tourist operation" where skiing is not permitted. If you are planning to visit in mid-December, please double-check the dates.
| Period | Dates (2026-27) | What You Can Do |
|---|---|---|
| Sightseeing Operation | – | Gondola and sightseeing lift only. No skiing, even if there is snow. |
| Ski Season | – | Skiing and snowboarding |
*Information from the official GALA Yuzawa website as of October 6, 2026. Bars show approximate positions by month.
■What Each Part of the Season Is Like
Late December through February is the heart of the season, when snow conditions are at their most stable. The New Year holidays and weekends get busy with day-trippers from Tokyo, so visiting on a weekday or catching an early Shinkansen makes for a more comfortable day on the slopes.
From March, the spring skiing season begins, and one of GALA Yuzawa's highlights is that you can keep skiing all the way through Golden Week. The sun is warmer, and there are more days when you can ski in lighter layers. In spring, however, the number of open runs may be limited depending on snow conditions, so check the slope information and live cameras on the official website before your visit.
Lift ticket prices (2026-27)

Access from Tokyo: Fastest time by Shinkansen (bullet train) is approximately 71 minutes.
GALA Yuzawa is the only ski resort in Japan where a Shinkansen station doubles as the resort entrance. Take the Joetsu Shinkansen "Tanigawa" from Tokyo Station or Ueno Station, get off at GALA Yuzawa Station, and the ski center, Cowabunga, is right past the ticket gate. The lift ticket counter, rental shop, lockers, and changing rooms are all on one floor, so once you have changed, you can head up to the slopes by gondola.

What's the best way to book? Comparing 3 different routes.
Even for a day trip, the amount of effort involved can vary greatly depending on what you arrange and where. Let's compare three typical patterns for trips departing from Tokyo.

| Method | Route | Estimated Travel Time |
|---|---|---|
| Shinkansen (Direct) | Tokyo Sta. / Ueno Sta. → (Joetsu Shinkansen "Tanigawa") → GALA Yuzawa Sta. (directly connected to the ski center) | About 71 min. at the fastest from Tokyo Sta. |
| Shinkansen + Free Shuttle Bus | Tokyo Sta. / Ueno Sta. → (Joetsu Shinkansen) → Echigo-Yuzawa Sta. → (free shuttle bus from the East Exit) → resort | Varies depending on train and bus times |
| Car | Kan-Etsu Expwy Yuzawa IC → about 3 km | A few minutes from Yuzawa IC |
*GALA Yuzawa Station is a winter-only station, and not every Shinkansen stops there. If your train terminates at Echigo-Yuzawa Station, take the free shuttle bus from the East Exit. Please check the JR East and official GALA Yuzawa websites for the latest timetables.
Recommended: JR TOKYO Wide PASS
If you want to enjoy a snow resort but also explore other sightseeing spots around Tokyo, the JR TOKYO Wide PASS (Wide PASS) is a great option. It is available only to travelers holding a non-Japanese passport.

The Wide PASS gives you unlimited rides for three consecutive days on JR East's Shinkansen and limited express trains, including reserved seats, mainly within the Kanto area. It is reasonably priced at 15,500 yen for adults (12 and over) and 7,750 yen for children (ages 6 to 11). Children under 6 do not need a pass unless they want a reserved seat.
So how much can you actually save? A regular round-trip reserved-seat ticket on the Joetsu Shinkansen from JR Tokyo Station to GALA Yuzawa Station costs about 14,000 yen for adults. If you are coming from Haneda or Narita Airport, you will also need to pay the fare to Tokyo Station on top of that. With the Wide PASS, you can ride as much as you like and visit other sightseeing spots along the way, so it is easy to see what a good deal it is.
For example, you could spend one day enjoying the snow at GALA Yuzawa, and use the remaining two days to visit places within the Wide PASS area, such as Kusatsu Onsen, the World Heritage site of Mt. Fuji, or Nikko, home to the World Heritage-listed Nikko Toshogu Shrine. Haneda and Narita Airports are also within the pass area, so the Wide PASS alone may cover all of your train travel after you arrive in Japan.
You can reserve the Wide PASS online in advance, but since the supported languages and ticket pickup locations are limited, it is currently best to buy it after you arrive in Japan. It is sold at JR East Travel Service Centers, JR East ticket offices (Midori-no-Madoguchi), and JR Travel Service Centers at stations such as Narita Airport, Haneda Airport, Tokyo, Ikebukuro, and Shinjuku.
Please note that the Wide PASS can only be purchased by travelers holding a non-Japanese passport, and you will be asked to show your passport when buying it. You can check which stations have ticket counters and their opening hours at the URL below.
Even those who don't ski can enjoy: gondola rides, snow activities, and hot springs.
One of the strengths of Gala Yuzawa is that you can enjoy it even with family and friends who don't ski.

Unique Activities
From everything introduced so far, you can probably see that GALA Yuzawa is a snow resort that all kinds of visitors can enjoy. But there are still more activities we would like to recommend.

GALA Yuzawa also holds a Kamakura Festival (Kamakura Matsuri) every year. Kamakura are traditional igloo-like snow huts, and you can try a kamakura experience for free, so if you have the chance, be sure to join in.

温泉でリラックス

SPA Gala no Yu has a hot spring area and a pool area. The pool area is mixed-gender and requires a swimsuit, but don't worry if you didn't bring one: swimsuits are available to rent for 500 yen (tax included).

There is a wide variety of baths. In addition to the indoor baths, you will find a mixed-gender open-air bath (swimsuits required), a bubble bath, a jet bath, a Jacuzzi, a waterfall shower bath, a lie-down bath, a sauna, a cold plunge bath, and a fitness pool (swimsuits required).
Admission covers both the hot springs and the pool: 1,500 yen for adults and 900 yen for children (as of November 2025).
In winter only, a tent sauna is also available. A separate fee applies (not yet announced as of November 2025).
Resort Tattoo Policy
Guests with tattoos are not permitted to enter.
■Enjoy Snowy Mountain Views with the Gondola & Barouche Ticket
With the Gondola & Barouche ticket (6,500 yen for adults, 5,500 yen online), you can ride the gondola and sightseeing lift up to the observation deck and take in the snowy scenery. Even if you don't ski, you can head up the mountain together with friends who do.
■Go Sledding at the Snow Play Park
The summit area has a Snow Play Park (Yukiasobi Park) where you can go sledding. It is a great choice for families with young children and for travelers seeing snow for the first time.

Ponshukan
Popular Bars and Izakaya
Niigata Prefecture, known as one of Japan's top rice-growing regions, is also famous for its sake. Surprisingly, Ponshukan, a sake museum where you can enjoy sake tasting, is located right inside Echigo-Yuzawa Station on the Joetsu Shinkansen line.
Pay 500 yen at the entrance, and you will receive five tokens and a small sake cup. With around 100 varieties of sake to choose from, you can use your tokens to sample whichever ones you like.
If you find a sake you love, you can buy a bottle to take home as a souvenir.
Ponshukan also offers other uniquely Niigata experiences, including a salt-tasting corner, giant "bakudan" (bomb) rice balls, koji drinks and sweets, and a sake-infused bath.
Yunosawa: Echigo-Yuzawa's Sake Bath
Yunosawa is a hot spring facility attached to Ponshukan near Echigo-Yuzawa Station, where you can soak in a unique bath mixed with sake. The sake bath is said to improve blood circulation and help you relax, making it a perfect way to unwind after a day in the snow.
Yuzawa Kogen Ropeway
This is one of the world's largest ropeways, carrying up to 166 passengers at a time up to an elevation of about 1,000 meters. From the top, you can take in sweeping views of the snow-covered mountains and the town of Yuzawa below, and enjoy the dreamlike, snow-blanketed summit.
Kiyotsu Gorge
From GALA Yuzawa, take the free shuttle bus to Echigo-Yuzawa Station, then transfer to the express bus bound for Morimiyanohara. After about 25 minutes, get off at the Kiyotsukyo Iriguchi bus stop, and walk about 30 minutes to the tunnel entrance. The tunnel is about 750 meters one way, and a round trip takes 40 minutes to an hour. Snowy scenery can be enjoyed from late December to early April. In winter (December to February), the tunnel is open from 9:00 to 16:00 (last entry 15:30), and it may close or shorten its hours on days with heavy snow. Off-season admission (November 21 to April 20) is 1,000 yen for adults and 400 yen for elementary and junior high school students. In the snowy season, the road from the bus stop becomes narrow and harder to walk, so you may also want to consider a tour bus from Yuzawa. Be sure to check the official website for the day's operating status before your visit.
