What to Do in Tokyo in June 2023: Roundup of Tokyo Area Events and Festivals

Date published: 30 May 2023

In Japan, June marks the beginning of the rainy season. Though the weather can be dreary, there are plenty of events and festivals to enjoy, like Reggae Fest and indoor beer gardens. It's also the perfect time to admire the beautiful blooming hydrangeas.

Here we'll share some of the best things to do in Tokyo in June.

Taisho Roman x Hyakudan Kaidan: The Romanticism of the Taisho Period (Meguro, Tokyo)

Taisho Roman x Hyakudan Kaidan: The Romanticism of the Taisho Period (Meguro, Tokyo)

The years spanning from the Meiji era (1868–1912) through the Taisho era (1912–26) and into the early years of the Showa era (1926–89) gave birth to a plethora of remarkable literary works.

Even in the present day, the works of esteemed authors like Junichiro Tanizaki, Kyoka Izumi, and Osamu Dazai continue to captivate a wide range of fans.

Hyakudan Kaidan, currently designated as a Tokyo Metropolitan Area tangible cultural property, was constructed in 1935 during the tenth year of the Showa period.

Comprising seven rooms interconnected by a staircase corridor, this building showcased the awe-inspiring creations of some of Japan's most celebrated artists, earning it the epithet of "the Palace of the Dragon King of the Showa era."

At this exhibition, visitors can marvel at three-dimensional depictions of the fantastical realms depicted in the early Showa Hyakudan Kaidan tales.

The exhibition also highlights the collaborative series, "Otome no Hondana" (Bookshelf of a young girl) by Rittorsha, where today's popular illustrators contribute their artwork to famous works by Japan's eminent authors. Visitors can witness the stories crafted by these literary legends alongside the accompanying illustrations, while three-dimensional representations of items from those works further enhance the experience.

Stepping into each room, you will feel as though you are turning the pages of a book, immersing yourself in the wondrous worlds crafted by these esteemed writers.
