What is Asakusa about?

Sitting on the banks of the Sumida River, Asakusa is synonymous with Sensoji Temple. Many of Sensoji Temple’s main sights are amongst some of Tokyo’s most famous landmarks, particularly the imposing Kaminarimon Gate, the long shopping street of Nakamise Dori and the temple’s pagoda. Hugely popular with both tourists and Tokyoites alike, Sensoji draws millions of visitors every year.

Surrounding Sensoji Temple is a network of vibrant streets, each lined with a variety of shops - ideal for picking up souvenirs - as well as a great range of local bars and restaurants. Asakusa is also a place that loves a celebration, being the location of one of Tokyo’s most famous festivals, the Asakusa Sanja Matsuri (held in May). The neighborhood also takes on a Latin American feel each September during the Asakusa Samba Carnival. The carnival sees a taste of Rio descend on Tokyo as a whole host of colorful parades and floats pass along Kaminarimon Dori.
