Description
Kumano Hongu Taisha Grand Shrine was once called Kumanoimasu Shrine. It is thought to have been designated as one of the main shrines for Kumano's gods. Until massive flooding in the Meiji era, the shrine was originally located in Oyunohara on the Kumano River. The main enshrined deity, Ketsumiko-no-Okami, is said to have descended into the yew trees of Oyunohara, and is worshiped as a god of trees.
