- Written by: Wemmy Chau
Calling all running enthusiasts and Japan travelers! The ancient capital of Nara has just debuted a brand-new 100-kilometer running event. The first-ever Nara Ultramarathon kicked off on May 31, 2026, at the historic Fujiwara Palace Ruins in Kashihara City, Nara Prefecture.
The inaugural race attracted around 3,000 runners from Japan and overseas. With an impressively high finish rate and enthusiastic support from participants and spectators alike, the event got off to a strong start and established itself as an exciting new addition to Japan’s ultramarathon calendar.

3 Epic Highlights from the First Nara Ultramarathon
1. A Mind-Blowing 80.17% Finish Rate! Super Runner-Friendly
For a grueling 100-kilometer ultramarathon, nearly two and a half times the distance of a standard 42.195-kilometer marathon, the inaugural Nara Ultramarathon achieved an impressive 80.17% finish rate. By comparison, many of Japan’s major ultramarathons typically see finish rates in the 60% to 70% range.
Much of that success can be attributed to the event’s thoughtful organization. From a carefully designed course and well-managed aid stations to effective measures for dealing with early-summer heat, the race provided runners with the support they needed to reach the finish line, helping make the first edition a resounding success.
2. Soak in World Heritage Sites, Historic Views, and Satoyama Scenery

Known as the birthplace of Japan, Nara’s rich history is woven throughout the course. The 100-kilometer route takes runners past multiple World Heritage sites, historic landmarks, and picturesque satoyama landscapes that showcase the region’s traditional rural scenery.
Rather than simply being a test of endurance, the race offers a unique sightseeing experience. As participants push themselves toward the finish line, they are rewarded with ever-changing views of Nara’s natural beauty and centuries-old cultural heritage.
3. The Ultimate Local Fuel! All-You-Can-Eat Kakinoha Sushi & Local Treats

The aid stations were also a celebration of Nara’s renowned food culture. Along the course, runners were treated to a variety of local specialties, including Kakinoha (persimmon leaf) sushi, with different flavors served at different aid stations to keep things fresh and exciting.
Other welcome energy boosts included somen noodles, kuzu manju (arrowroot sweets), and Nara’s famous frozen Asuka Ruby strawberries. These regional delicacies provided more than just nutrition, giving participants a memorable taste of the area as they made their way toward the finish line.
Epic Race Results & What's Next

Competition was fierce in the inaugural race. Yuichi Hirotani claimed the men's title with a winning time of 7:19:16, while Haruka Yamaguchi took top honors in the women's division with an impressive 9:03:50, becoming the event's first-ever champions.
The race also featured a special U25 (Under 25) category designed to encourage younger runners to challenge themselves and take on their first 100-kilometer ultramarathon. According to the organizers, the Nara Ultramarathon is intended to be a community-driven event, with plans to continue building it into a lasting tradition for years to come.
Editor's Pro Tip: Gear Up for Round Two!

In recent years, marathon tourism has become a major travel trend, with runners from around the world combining race participation with sightseeing and cultural experiences across Japan. As a result, entry slots for many of the country’s most popular races are highly sought after and often sell out quickly.
The inaugural Nara Ultramarathon was no exception. All 3,000 entries were claimed almost immediately after registration opened, highlighting the strong demand for this unique event. If you missed out this year, now is the perfect time to start training and keep an eye on the official website for updates on the next race.
With its combination of challenging distances, historic scenery, and memorable local cuisine, the Nara Ultramarathon offers far more than just a race. The next edition could be your chance to experience 100 kilometers of Nara’s rich history, culture, and hospitality firsthand.
