NEXER Co., Ltd. and camper van resale company A-Saito surveyed 1,000 men and women across Japan to discover the top 10 most popular destinations for autumn foliage camping this year. Unsurprisingly, well-known spots like Kyoto and Hokkaido made the list.

With overwhelming support, Kyoto Prefecture claims the top spot!

Beloved not only by Japanese locals but also by international visitors, Kyoto offers a wealth of attractions steeped in history. From the coastal beauty of Amanohashidate, known as "Kyoto by the Sea," to the countless ancient temples scattered throughout the city, Kyoto feels like stepping into a historical drama, making it a dream destination for many.

Autumn arrives earlier here than on Japan’s main island, and the varied scenery offers a unique range of fall foliage experiences. For something truly different, Noboribetsu’s “Hell Valley” (Jigokudani) is a must-see. This volcanic area, the hot spring source for Noboribetsu Onsen, features vibrant red leaves contrasting with dramatic plumes of white volcanic steam. #3: Tochigi Prefecture

Third place goes to Tochigi Prefecture, also renowned for its natural beauty!

Located near Tokyo, Tochigi is home to the UNESCO World Heritage site Nikko Toshogu Shrine, a grand and sacred site dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Edo period, and Minamoto no Yoritomo, the first shogun of the Kamakura period. This shrine attracts many history enthusiasts each year.

Beyond Toshogu, Nikko offers numerous attractions, especially in autumn. One highlight is Lake Chuzenji, where vibrant maple and rowan trees line the lakeshore. Visitors can also take a scenic boat cruise to enjoy the crisp breeze and view the colorful leaves set against the area’s expansive natural scenery.

In fourth place is Nagano Prefecture, also conveniently located near Tokyo.

Just an hour and a half from Tokyo, Nagano’s Karuizawa is a popular summer getaway known for its cool climate, drawing many visitors seeking a refreshing escape. However, it’s equally enchanting in autumn, when the landscape transforms with brilliant fall colors.

One must-visit spot in Karuizawa is Kumoba Pond, affectionately known as “Swan Lake.” The calm, mirror-like surface of the pond reflects the vibrant autumn leaves, creating a picturesque scene that looks like a painting. This stunning sight makes Kumoba Pond an essential stop for anyone visiting Karuizawa in fall.

Each autumn, approximately 400–500 maple trees lining the path along Lake Kawaguchi turn brilliant shades of red, transforming into the “Lake Kawaguchi Maple Corridor.” This enchanting setting feels like stepping into a fairy tale. During this time, the area hosts the Fuji Kawaguchi Autumn Leaves Festival, featuring various events and evening illuminations, making it an ideal spot for those who enjoy vibrant autumn festivities.
