1. Bread, Espresso, and Arashiyama Garden: Popular Bakery & Cafe Expands to Kyoto!

With their first location in Omotesando, Tokyo, the popular bakery cafe Bread and Espresso has expanded their shop to various other areas. In July of 2019, they opened another branch in Arashiyama, Kyoto: Bread, Espresso, and Arashiyama Garden.

This space has been renovated from the Old Kobayashi Home, a cultural property designated by Kyoto Prefecture. The buildings and spacious gardens are nearly 200 years old, and remain in almost the exact same state as they were back then. The entire Kyoto cafes is divided between two buildings: the bakery, called Pan-to (or "Bread"), and the cafe, Espresso. Both are connected by a cobblestone path.

The bakery sells all kinds of breads: sliced bread, hard breads, croissants, and even special, limited-edition breads made with local Kyoto ingredients. You can eat in the cafe, or order as take-out.

There are three types of lunch sets at the Espresso cafe: Matsu, Take, and Ume. This gorgeous two-tiered 'Bran Tea Set' (Matsu, 2,300 yen, tax included) looks cute, and tastes even better! It includes five types of bread, ham, cheese, a mini salad, pound cake, canele, hojicha tiramisu, and a fruit sandwich.

There are also popular morning and dessert menus available. You can even try a delicious Kyoto style bread made with dashi stock. So grab some bread or pastries and enjoy your lunch as you admire the delightful gardens.

2. Bread, Espresso, and Fukuda Art Museum: Museum Cafe with a Panoramic View of Togetsukyo Bridge

There is one more Bread and Espresso location in Arashiyama. That is Bread, Espresso, and Fukuda Art Museum, a Kyoto cafe that opened in the Fukuda Art Museum in October of 2019. The cafe has a great view of the Togetsukyo Bridge, one of the most symbolic landmarks of Arashiyama. After an afternoon of art appreciation, why not stop by for a quick, relaxing meal?

Foreign language menus are available, and social distancing is maintained between seating throughout the shop. Please ask for sanitizer before entering.

There are three types of Panini lunch menu options: Pork Belly Confit & Kyoto Kujo Scallions, Kamo Eggplant and Tuna Ratatouille, and Raw Ham & Mozzarella. Each item is 1,200 yen (tax included) and includes a salad and a drink. We also recommend their dessert menu, such as the Seasonal Fortune Parfait (1,200 yen, tax included). Ingredients vary by season.

Though the menu has temporarily been changed as a result of measures taken against coronavirus, the panini set and parfait are scheduled to resume from August 2020. Currently, breads are sold in bags.
