Sweets Avenue: Home to many popular confectioneries!
One of the popular things to buy in Hokkaido is confectionery. Hokkaido is home to many types of confections that are also very popular with local residents. The New Chitose Airport hosts many of the shops from around Hokkaido that are famous for their sweets.
Located on the second floor of the terminal, Sweets Avenue has a rich array of popular Hokkaido food souvenirs. These you will not want to miss because they are only available here. Let’s look at some of these shops.
#1. Ryugetsu: Sanporoku Studio is the most popular item
Shaped like the head of an axe and fashioned to resemble a birch tree, the Sanporoku is sold directly by Ryugetsu. It is the perfect gift for the workplace, one box containing five individually wrapped pieces (600 yen), and it is the standard Hokkaido food souvenir. In addition to the plain flavor sold throughout the year, there is also a melon flavored version sold only during the summer (750 yen for a box of 5), which is also very popular. The outer surface is done in white chocolate with a melon peel motif while the inside of the cake is suffused with the taste of melon juice.
Another Hokkaido food souvenir you should try is the Dora Creme Issei (600 yen for a box of 4) made from a secret recipe of rum raisin buttercream sandwiched in a soft, chewy chocolate cake shell. For anyone with a sweet tooth, this is pure heaven. If you prefer something a bit saltier, then we recommend the Shake Bushi Maru senbei (rice cracker) (350 yen for a package of 5).

#2. Morimoto: Here you’ll find the most popular chocolates!
The Little Cake Shop of the North Haskapp Jewelry is but one of many of Morimoto's confections made from the finest Hokkaido ingredients, delicately crafted. Its most popular item is the Chitose Umare no Tamago Manju (1,300 yen for a box of 10). Bean paste (an) made with the yolks of fresh eggs fewer than three days old, is wrapped in a thin moist dough and then baked. One bite and the soft flavors will melt in your mouth.
Another item sold only at the airport is the delicately crafted Little Cake Shop of the North Haskapp Jewelry (1,080 yen for a box of 6). Another product we recommend is the Shikotsu no Fukuryumizukomi Dorayaki (900 yen for a box of 6), This is uniquely different from other dorayaki; it’s cake fluffy and the bean paste made by slowly boiling the beans in subterranean water from Shikotsu, combine to give it a richer flavor. It comes in two flavors: red bean and white bean. We suggest you try the red bean one first.

#3. Ezaki Glico: Caramel Kitchen of the famed caramel confectionery
Caramel Kitchen is the only shop exclusively selling caramel confections by Ezaki Glico, one of Japan’s leading confectioneries. Using fresh Hokkaido milk and butter, the caramel is prepared every day in copper pans in the shop’s kitchen just as though it were homemade. You can watch it being made, too.
The number one selling item here is the Caramel Biscuit (butter) (1,080 yen for a set of 8). Biscuits made with a large dollop of Hokkaido butter are layered with caramel; the crispy texture of the wafer is well-matched with the rich caramel to create a sumptuous treat. In addition to the butter flavor, there is also one in chocolate, as well as a limited edition one in honeysuckle.
We also recommend the Homemade Caramel (almond) (864 yen for a box of 8). This caramel is handmade using fresh Hokkaido cream and covered with crushed almonds that have been carefully roasted in the shop.
The roasted flavor of the almonds and crunchy texture bring out the character of the caramel. In addition to almond, there is also a milk flavor, and during a limited time, matcha (powdered green tea) and rum raisin flavors are also created. Freshly made, these caramels are truly exquisite.

#4. Pastry Snaffle’s: The famous Hakodate patisserie
The Cheese Omelet (1,296 yen for a box of 8), with its rich cheese flavor, is the most popular item in Pastry Snaffle’s, the famous Hakodate patisserie. This soufflé-like cheese cake will melt in your mouth just like a soft-cooked omelet.
Freshly baked every day they are displayed at the front of the shop. Not only do they make great gifts, but excellent snacks for when traveling.
The Fuwafuwa Cookie Sandwich (1,080 yen for 5) is only sold at this airport and an item we really recommend. Its marshmallow center evokes the image of a soft cloud, the shortbread made with three spices and covered in chocolate makes this a rich treat. Another sweet we recommend is the heart-shaped Bon Appétit madeleine (1,080 yen for 6). The maple sugar and soft sweet egg give this baked item a gentle flavor.

#5. Kitakaro: Hokkaido's Famous Patisserie - New Chitose Airport Shop
Kitakaro is famous for its chou à la crème and cake confections. Its Baumkuchen Yosei no Mori (from 1,296 yen for a 4cm tall cake), baked one layer at a time is, as its name when translated into English suggests, a “Baumkuchen from a Fairy Forest”. Its soft, sweet texture made from the finest Hokkaido ingredients dances pleasantly on the palate.
The Hokkaido Kaitaku Okaki rice crackers (440 yen for 170 grams, any type) are particularly popular with men. Kitakaro is also very proud of its cream puffs, especially the Kappushu Yume Fusen (185 yen each). The surface of the shell is crisp while the inside is moist and soft. This is filled with a custard cream mixed with mascarpone cheese.

#6. Royce’ Airport Shop and Royce’ Chocolate World
The Royce’ Airport Shop boasts a large selection of various types of chocolate beginning with its trademark Nama (raw) Chocolate. There are several flavors limited to certain seasons in addition to the soft, milk-flavored Au Lait mentioned earlier, and all of the Nama Chocolate are constant favorites with sightseers from within and outside of the country. The Nama Chocolate Maccha (778 yen for a box of 20) is a blend of white chocolate, maccha, and pure Hokkaido cream. It has a refreshing flavor and aftertaste that is the secret to its popularity.
Royce’ has one more shop in the New Chitose Airport. It is the Royce’ Chocolate World located on the third floor Smile Road. Here, in addition to standard Royce’ chocolates, can be found the Royce’ Pop Chocolate (184 yen each) that are chocolate animal figures on sticks along with about 200 other original items. There is also a bakery selling freshly baked bread using lots of chocolate and also a museum showing the history of chocolate.

#7. Snow Brand Parlor
The Snow Brand Parlor uses the rich dairy products of Hokkaido for its ice cream and cheese. Many types of sweets, such as the sweet New Chitose Airport Soft ice cream cone (390 yen), are available for takeout. One that we highly recommend is the Snow Royal (390 yen for a single) ice cream which was specially produced for the Showa Emperor and Empress. It has a fat content of 15.6% and does not contain any egg. It has a rich, milky flavor that lingers in the mouth. This was made at the request of the Imperial Household Agency and has a clean aftertaste similar to traditional ice cream. A box with dry ice costs 540 yen and will stay chilled for 8 hours, so you can take it with you to your hotel and enjoy it there. We also recommend the Camembert Cheese Cake (1,080 yen for one cake) which is only sold in Hokkaido and uses lots of Tokachi Taiki Town Camembert cheese.

#8. LeTAO and Nouvelle Vague LeTAO Chocolatier
The products of LeTAO in Otaru are legendary and are available here at the airport, too. Its mainstay is the baked cheesecake topped with mascarpone cheese called the Double Fromage (1,728 yen). The Ironai Langue de chat (918 yen for 10) is lighter and perfect for shipping as a gift. This light cookie has the same flavor as the Double Fromage.
The Nouvelle Vague chocolate specialty shop is located in the same terminal building on the second floor Sweets Avenue. Here new ideas using a variety of chocolate ingredients are created freely and imaginatively. We recommend you try the Royale Montagne, a popular chocolate with the aroma of Darjeeling tea (864 yen for 4). This is a luxurious chocolate cake being an exquisite blend of cacao and Darjeeling tea.

Bonus: Other recommended Hokkaido products
We looked at the popular items at several popular confectioneries, but probably there are some who may think that they would not have enough time to visit all of them, so we have asked two shops in the departure lobby central area that have a selection of gifts from all parts of Hokkaido what their best sellers are in order to get a quick idea of what products are most popular. Here are the items recommended by these two shops as being the most popular.
Let’s first look at the sales of the Snow Shop that has shops in the departure lobbies on both the second floor of the Domestic Terminal and the third floor of the International Terminal. In addition to such well-known Hokkaido confections as Shiroi Koibito made by Ishiya and Marusei Butter Sand made by Rokkatei, there is also a wide selection of original and other goods made in collaboration with popular confectioneries.
This includes "Mifuyu" (6 pieces/842 yen) is a delightfully crispy pie with three types of fillings (blueberry, caramel, and chestnut) with chocolate wrapped around, and the Shiroi Baum Tsumugi, with Shiroi Koibito white chocolate inside a tantalizing dough.
Treats of their own design are also popular, such as the Hokkaido Buttered Potato Cake (1,296 yen for 6) and the Shake Bushi Ramen (540 yen for two servings) also do well, so it is hard to say which individual product is most popular.

Sky Shop Ogasawara offers a comprehensive selection of complete souvenir items selected from all areas of Hokkaido and of course that includes confections, too. Among the latter, a good selection of Rokkatei products is offered in their shop in the terminal building. Rokkatei Sakusaku Pie (180 yen each) can be purchased here as well as at the head store in Obihiro and another store in Sapporo. The Jagamorokoshi (777 yen for 8) was jointly developed by the Chitose confectionery morimoto and Rokkatei and is another very popular item. The Burakkusanda that is available only at limited times is especially popular with overseas visitors. One item you should check out is the Mero~n Burakkusanda (864 yen for 12) sold only in Hokkaido which uses freeze-dried melon and is sold in the summer.

Although we have primarily introduced confectioneries, the Shopping World in the New Chitose Airport has an excellent selection of marine, processed meats, and other Hokkaido specialties offered in its Omiyage no Depato (Department store for gifts). If you were not able to buy certain souvenirs at some of the places you visited in Hokkaido, you can probably get them here as well as other limited edition items only sold here.
