Hokkaido is famous for Jingisukan (also known as Genghis Khan and Mongolian barbecue), a dish of mutton and lamb sizzled to perfection on a special grill with vegetables in front of your very eyes!
The meat mostly comes from Australia, New Zealand, and Iceland, however, some establishments also use domestic mutton and lamb as well as Yezu deer venison.
There are various ways to eat the grilled meat; often it’s dipped in a zesty sauce either before or after being grilled. Each Sapporo Jingisukan restaurant has its own unique recommendations and comparing them can be quite enjoyable.

1. Jingisukan Daruma 5●5 Shop: Popular with locals and visitors alike!
Established in 1954, Jingisukan Daruma opened a new outlet in October 2017. The main Jingisukan restaurant is located on the first floor of the Crystal Building, 4-chome, Minami 5-jonishi in the Susukino district.
Jingisukan Daruma 5●5 has enjoyed immense popularity from the day it opened. Be prepared to wait to get in because the shop does not take reservations.
There is only one basic Jingisukan menu consisting of a combination of shoulder loin, loin, and thigh cuts of meat, all for only 850 yen. The meat is cut into large, satisfying chunks. The most popular way of eating it in Sapporo is by dipping the grilled meat into a sauce before eating it.
French mutton raised exclusively on grain is a special cut that is only sold at his outlet and not the other four for 1,300 yen. There is also a fillet cut that is thick and tender costing only 1,150 yen. Both cuts are limited so they often sell out quickly.
The Jingisukan Daruma 5●5 restaurant is outfitted with a smoke exhaust ventilation system, so there is no worry about smoke even when grilling over charcoal. Also, there are lockers inside the shop where you can check your belongings to prevent them from being impregnated by the unique Jingisukan aroma of cooked meat.

2. Matsuo Jingisukan Sapporo Ekimae: Delectable sauce-marinated meat!
This is an outlet of the Matsuo Jingisukan chain that has its main restaurant located in Takikawa City (near Asahikawa City), about 90 kilometers outside of Sapporo. This famous chain has outlets throughout the prefecture and also in Tokyo.
Matsuo Jingisukan is famous for its original sauce that is made with apples, onions, soy sauce, ginger, and spices and is said to make the meat more tender as well as take away its strong aroma. Garlic is not used, so those who are averse to the smell can rest at ease.
Load up the grill with meat that has been marinated in sauce and stew the vegetables in the meat’s juices. If you are visiting for the first time we recommend the 2989 (which can be read in Japanese as “nikuyaku,” meaning “grilled meat”) set that costs 2,989 yen.
This consists of lamb rib loin, special lamb, lamb, and lamb hearts as well as 60 grams of vegetables per person, rice, miso soup, and one drink. There is also an all-you-can-eat plan (100 minutes, from 4,000 yen) as well as a salted lamb steak that costs 850 yen.
This Sapporo Jingisukan restaurant is connected directly with the underground passageway that stretches from Sapporo Station. No need for an umbrella even on rainy days. The interior of the shop is fashionable in a way different from other Jingisukan shops, with an atmosphere inviting a comfortable and enjoyable stay.

3. Itadakimasu: Offering Suffolk Lamb raised on its own ranch
This Sapporo Jingisukan restaurant takes its name from “Itadakimasu”, the expression Japanese say before they begin a meal. It uses only pure Hokkaido Suffolk Lamb which is raised, processed, and cured on its own ranch.
The standard menu consists of regular Jingisukan at 980 yen, a loin cut, shoulder loin cut, and nakaochi (meat shavings) each reasonably priced at 1,790 yen. Organ meats are also popular. Also recommended are the semi-dry sausages made using a saltwater method and Krakow sausages, each costing 580 yen.
The outlet is located in the heart of Susukino. The interior has an open kitchen surrounded by counters. There is always a line of people waiting to be seated, so you need to add your name to the list and wait to be called.

4. Yozora Jingisukan Honten: Enjoy Susukino’s night view while eating sizzling meats!
Yozora no Jingisukan operates four outlets in Susukino and this is the main establishment. Located on the 10th floor of the building, it offers a spectacular view of the Ferris wheel, a landmark of Susukino, from its windows.
A very popular 60-minute course is the all-you-can-eat-and-drink one offering Australian lamb, kimchee, vegetables, rice, and a selection of 60 kinds of drinks including beer all for only 3,800 yen. There is also an all-you-can-eat course offering three types of Jingisukan for 4,000 yen.
The a la carte menu has a large selection as well. The “night sky local product comparison set”, 2,050 yen, is popular. This is an assortment of Hokkaido lamb, Australian lamb, Iceland lamb, Hokkaido Shibetsu lamb, and Sika deer venison.
The rice and vegetables come from contracted farms in Naganuma, in the outskirts of Sapporo. Three types of condiments – soy sauce, miso sauce, and herb salt – add flavor to the meat.

5. Asahi Beer Garden Yoyotei: For Jingisukan and beer shipped directly from the brewery!
The Asahi Beer Garden is located near the Susukino intersection. Asahi Beer is one of Japan’s major beer breweries and its Asahi Super Dry is one of the most popular brands in the country.
The spacious interior can seat 250 people. There are also private rooms. One salient point is the clean air of the interior thanks to the smokeless grills. This is a great place to enjoy Sapporo Jingisukan in the spacious grounds of a large Hokkaido brewery.
The menu includes an all-you-can-eat special lamb Jingisukan for 2,980 yen. Another popular menu item is the all-you-can-eat lamb shoulder loin costing 3,780 yen. Only eight servings can be made from one animal.
For another 1,280 yen, you can also get all-you-can-drink Asahi Super Dry beer or wine. The lamb comes from the Chitose Nozawa Ranch which produces two types: Texel that costs 1,480 yen per 100 grams and Suffolk, which costs 1,580 yen.
