Japan's Nationwide New Year Sales (2025 Guide): Opening Hours for Major Shops, Tips, and More
- Written by: Kaori Kimura
In Japan, 'Hatsu-uri,' or the first sales of the year, marks the beginning of the year when shops, department stores, shopping malls, and electronics retailers go all out with 'Fukubukuro' (lucky bags) sales and special promotions, making them livelier than usual. But you have to be careful as well: open hours change during the Japanese New Year!
Around the New Year, many places have special opening and closing times, often with earlier closures. Here, we've compiled the 2025 New Year's opening hours for major malls and shops all across Japan.

What is "hatsu-uri" all about?
As the new year arrives, the tradition of "Hatsu-uri," the first sales, comes into play. Hatsu-uri days are filled with exciting events like sales, enticing lucky bags, and thrilling prize draws. Many establishments open earlier than usual, with eager customers lining up even before the doors open, sometimes prompting early opening times to manage the crowds.
Most department stores and malls are typically closed on New Year's Day, designating January 2nd as the official Hatsu-uri day. However, in recent years, some department stores have started closing until the 2nd. For 2025, Daimaru Tokyo, Takashimaya, and Matsuya Ginza have announced that their New Year's sales will begin on January 3. Outlet malls, on the other hand, often remain open on January 1st.
What are "fukubukuro"?
Department stores and malls often offer "Fukubukuro" (lucky bags) during Hatsu-uri. Fukubukuro are bags containing various items, intentionally kept a mystery, and sometimes they contain products worth more than the bag's price. The incredible value they offer can lead to customers lining up before opening, all in pursuit of these lucky bags. The excitement of not knowing what's inside, coupled with the thrill of opening them, adds to their charm.
In recent years, lucky bag sales have been gradually changing. While they are typically sold during New Year’s first sales, some stores allow pre-orders via websites or apps in advance, with some sold by lottery. To secure your preferred bag, check store information from late November to December. Additionally, more lucky bags now reveal their contents in advance while maintaining their sense of value and exclusivity, so be sure to have a look at those as well.
Advice for Conquering Hatsu-uri
1. Arrive with Extra Time
On Hatsu-uri day, as many people form lines awaiting store openings, there's a chance the opening time might be moved up a little. It’s not uncommon for lucky bags and other items sold on a first-come, first-served basis, so to avoid arriving and finding items sold out, plan to arrive at the store with extra time.
2. Exercise Caution Against Impulse Buying
During the Hatsu-uri sale, it's wise to decide what you intend to purchase beforehand. Sale items may include outdated or unpopular items, and returns are often not possible unless there's a defect. Impulse buying, driven by low prices, can lead to items you never use or wear.
3. Confirm Sale Methods for Lucky Bags in Advance
On Hatsu-uri day, long lines often form in front of department stores and malls, with many people aiming for "Fukubukuro" (lucky bags). However, as stated above, not all stores necessarily sell them in-store on the Hatsu-uri day. Some use methods like online reservations or lottery sales. Additionally, early morning queueing for numbered tickets is common. If you have a specific Fukubukuro in mind, research its purchase method, sale date, and time in advance.
