#1: Kyoto Prefecture
With overwhelming support, Kyoto Prefecture claims the top spot!
Beloved not only by Japanese locals but also by international visitors, Kyoto offers a wealth of attractions steeped in history. From the coastal beauty of Amanohashidate, known as "Kyoto by the Sea," to the countless ancient temples scattered throughout the city, Kyoto feels like stepping into a historical drama, making it a dream destination for many.
In autumn, the city’s stunning crimson foliage brings even more charm to this historic landscape. Kiyomizu-dera Temple, famous for its elevated viewing platform, offers sweeping views of vibrant maple leaves blanketing the area like a brilliant red carpet. At night, a special illumination event adds a magical touch, casting a new light on Kiyomizu-dera’s beauty. With its timeless appeal, Kyoto’s seasonal scenery keeps visitors coming back to experience each unique season anew.

Nearly twice the size of Taiwan, Hokkaido boasts diverse landscapes and local delicacies. It’s especially popular in winter for its powdery snow, attracting visitors from around the world. Autumn arrives earlier here than on Japan’s main island, and the varied scenery offers a unique range of fall foliage experiences. For something truly different, Noboribetsu’s “Hell Valley” (Jigokudani) is a must-see. This volcanic area, the hot spring source for Noboribetsu Onsen, features vibrant red leaves contrasting with dramatic plumes of white volcanic steam. Third place goes to Tochigi Prefecture, also renowned for its natural beauty!
Located near Tokyo, Tochigi is home to the UNESCO World Heritage site Nikko Toshogu Shrine, a grand and sacred site dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Edo period, and Minamoto no Yoritomo, the first shogun of the Kamakura period. This shrine attracts many history enthusiasts each year.
Beyond Toshogu, Nikko offers numerous attractions, especially in autumn. One highlight is Lake Chuzenji, where vibrant maple and rowan trees line the lakeshore. Each autumn, approximately 400–500 maple trees lining the path along Lake Kawaguchi turn brilliant shades of red, transforming into the “Lake Kawaguchi Maple Corridor.” This enchanting setting feels like stepping into a fairy tale.
