Step Into the Story: Inside Immersive Fort Tokyo
- Written by: Chehui Peh
Tokyo's latest attraction, Immersive Fort Tokyo, launched to much fanfare on March 1, 2024. LIVE JAPAN delivers exclusive insights into Tokyo's newest sensation, sharing firsthand experiences of the immersive realm that is transforming theme park escapades.
What is Immersive Fort?
Immersive Fort Tokyo is hailed as the world's first immersive theme park, uniquely positioned to revolutionize the concept of theme parks.
Opened on March 1, 2024, in Odaiba, Tokyo, it distinguishes itself by offering a fully immersive experience.
Here, visitors don't just observe; they become protagonists in their own dramatic adventures as the park transports you to a different time and place. The park is designed to evoke deep emotional engagement, providing experiences that are both personal and thrilling.
A New Storytelling Approach
The concept of Immersive Fort Tokyo is based on immersive storytelling, a form of entertainment where participants are not merely passive observers but become active characters within the narrative. An immersive experience is one where the environment, actors, technology, and narratives converge to create a compelling, all-encompassing experience, blurring the lines between reality and fiction. This diverges from conventional theme park attractions by prioritizing personal involvement, providing visitors with a distinctive and direct interaction with the story as it unfolds around them.
Immersive Fort Tokyo presents this concept on a grand scale. As the first theme park of its kind, guests are invited to delve into every detail, where each moment is an invitation to participate. Within a space spanning approximately 30,000 square meters, visitors are treated to a plethora of themed attractions, including horror, mystery, and escape experiences, each designed to elicit a unique emotional response and a sense of personal journey.
The creators behind this innovative theme park, Katana Inc., are known for their dynamic approach to entertainment. They are immersive theater pioneers who specialize in bringing dramatic, large-scale immersive experiences to audiences. The company emerged in 2017 after its founder, Tsuyoshi Morioka, successfully completed the mission of revitalizing Universal Studios Japan.
Meet Our Editors and Reviewers
- LIVE JAPAN’s English editor who enjoys exploring new locations that may captivate visitors to Japan.
- “I have fond memories of visiting Venus Fort in the early 2000s, and am most intrigued at the site’s transformation into Immersive Fort Tokyo. I’m particularly curious about the adaptation of the massive 30,000-square-meter area into a live performance space. Some of the performances are rather compact and last only for a few minutes. I’m especially keen to see The Sherlock as I’ve never experienced immersive theater before and it’s difficult to imagine what it will be like.”
- LIVE JAPAN's Taiwan editor likes to explore new spots in Japan that Taiwanese travelers will love.
- “I’m particularly excited by The Sherlock as well, as I love mystery shows and the character Sherlock. It’ll be exciting to see something I love come alive in an immersive theatrical experience.”
- LIVE JAPAN's Taiwan editor likes to explore new and interesting sights and introduce them to everyone.
- “I can’t wait to see how the old building was transformed into a new experiential attraction. I’m also looking forward to Identity V Immersive Chase, based on the popular hide-and-seek concept mobile game. I would love to embody a character from the game and engage in the exhilarating challenge that awaits us.”
The Attractions: A Look Inside (Without Spoilers)
The Sherlock Baker Street Murder Case
Guests are transported into the midst of a thrilling scene set in 19th-century London, where they can step into the shoes of the legendary detective Sherlock Holmes.
This walk-through immersive theater attraction unfolds within a vast expanse that replicates the mysterious ambiance of the era, inviting guests to lose themselves in Sherlock’s world. You’ll meet a variety of characters, including Sherlock Holmes himself, his trusty partner Watson, Inspector Lestrade, and other familiar faces.
Our thoughts: Upon entry, participants receive special bandanas that allow them to be "anonymous" as they navigate through Sherlock’s London.
With the freedom to roam, you’ll find yourself having different experiences depending on the path you choose, whether you end up at iconic locations such as 221B Baker Street, foggy alleys, and shady taverns; or perhaps even witness a gruesome murder case up close.
Chia-Chi shared, “Oh, it's like stepping into another world! The entire theater is transformed into a slice of London, making you feel like you're actually a villager there. It's thrilling to wander around, following the characters to different scenes. And the best part? The whole experience is live, so depending on where you are, or which character you decide to shadow, you get to see the story unfold from unique angles. It's such a fresh and exciting setup!”
For fans of mystery stories and especially of Sherlock, it will be an unforgettable experience to solve a live mystery with him.

Identity V Immersive Chase
This attraction plunges guests into a hunter vs. survivor scenario where strategy and stealth are key.
Based on the popular asymmetrical competitive multiplayer game, participants must evade the hunter and cooperate with allies to escape the maze, a heart-pounding experience of tension and excitement. Complete the mission or rescue your friends? It’s your choice.
Our thoughts: The objective of this attraction is to escape and hide from the hunters while cooperating with your friends to escape.
There is no completely safe place in the area, and you always have to find ingenious places to hide, whilst your hearts are pounding severely, looking out at the hunters approaching.
One of our editors, Lee, knew about this game and really looked forward to it before playing, and it did not fail.
“Oh, I was really hyped about this game before even stepping in! Just picturing the adrenaline rush had me on edge. And let me tell you, it doesn't disappoint. The moment you're in that dark space, working your way through the mission, with hunters on your heels, and trying to rescue your teammates – it's so fun.”
Chia-Chi shared, “Although I've never played the game before, I've always heard that it's very interesting, so this time I went down to play it myself, and I can only say that it's too exciting! I don't really know the rules, it's all about escaping and unlocking, but it's a pity that I failed this challenge, I really want to play it a few more times!”
We failed the mission this time, and really want to go back for more excitement.

Jack the Ripper Whitechapel Killer
Lost in the back alleys in 19th-century London, you accidentally witness a murder. Jack the Ripper glares at you from the dead body, what do you do next? Guests are led on a nerve-wracking journey trying to get out alive. The intense horror maze experience is heightened as unexpected surprises lurk around every corner, with the group's collective choices leading them to encounter the macabre tale of Jack the Ripper in new and terrifying ways.
Our thoughts: Guests move through each room in groups of up to 8 per group, and although bravery comes in numbers, it is terrifying being hunted by a real killer, and it can be very spooky for some.
Lee: “I thought the eerie atmosphere was very well done! I was at the front of the line and opened the door to the dark and spooky labyrinth by myself, which gave me a great sense of adventure. There were also many scary setups in the maze, so screaming along was a great stress reliever.”
Chia-Chi chimed in, “The whole vibe was pretty spooky, and guess what? I ended up at the front of the line, which freaked me out a bit, so I just kept speeding up because I wanted to get through it as fast as possible, haha. But the crazy part? As soon as I was out, all I could think about was going back in. It was that thrilling and memorable.”
Be prepared before heading in, as you might have a few frightening little surprises along the way.
The Cabaret
Step into the vibrant world of The Cabaret and prepare to experience exquisite French dining with a mesmerizing live performance that aims to captivate and enchant the audience.
You might just be a part of the spectacle, in this dining experience that blends food and performance. You’re not just at the show, you’re in it.
Our thoughts: A dining experience that blends performance with mealtime, The Cabaret is brought to life as the audience is treated to familiar popular pop songs and live acts that invite guest participation. The energy is palpable as the show unfolds, offering a multi-sensory feast.
The performance is intimate, with singers, dancers, and musicians showcasing their talents up close, creating an inclusive atmosphere that invites guests to clap, tap, and become part of the rhythm.
Timothy mentioned: “It's an exceptionally high-energy and entertaining experience. Each of the performers, singers and musicians was outstandingly talented. The venue is fairly intimate, with performances happening right before your eyes. And the cast members move throughout the space, right in front of the audience, enhancing the immersive experience as you dine. I can't recommend this experience enough.”
Spy Action!
You're a spy in the midst of a high-stakes espionage drama in a European city setting. There is an attack by the mafia, and a fierce battle ensues between the agents and the mafia. Some of the audience members might be taken hostage, when the battle spreads within the city and ordinary citizens are caught up in the fray. How will you survive?
Our thoughts: The attraction blurs the line between observer and participant, thrusting guests into the action-packed world of spies with quality action that's both dramatic and impressively realistic. Guests are not bystanders and anyone can be a part of this drama. For those who like to see action up close, this is an attraction not to be missed. Our editors felt the tension up close and really enjoyed it!
Chia-chi commented, "The actors' performances are simply outstanding, plunging you into the midst of the action and making the experience really intense. Being caught up in the unfolding incident feels genuinely thrilling. Plus, the spy agent's martial arts scenes are super cool, offering a fantastic sense of immersion."
Lee agreed, "Having a gun pointed at you for the first time in your life and being shouted at by incredibly ferocious actors is an experience like no other! It’s especially a must-see for those who are into action movies and have a thing for watching martial arts scenes right up in their face."
Immersive Stories: The Hansel and Gretel That Nobody Knew
This attraction brings people into the fairytale world of Hansel and Gretel, with 360-degree visuals and sound. See the house of sweets, and experience the story of Hansel and Gretel up close.
However, your emotions will be taken on a ride like a roller coaster as the story unfolds. Expect an unexpected twist that will overturn your conventional expectations of this iconic story.
Our thoughts: This attraction transcends mere storytelling, inviting you to step into the pages of this classic fairytale with a sense of wonder the moment you begin.
Explore divergent paths—Hansel and Gretel’s route or the Witches' route—where each will offer a unique perspective on this well-known story.
Opt for a journey with the witch; we promise you'll experience the tale through a fresh lens that promises to leave a lasting impression. Without too many spoilers...
Chia-chi commented, "Even though we're all familiar with the tale of the Candy House, traditionally told through the eyes of the siblings, choosing the Witch Route this time around offered a fresh and fascinating twist!"
Lee shared, "Witnessing the process of demonization beyond the heart's borders was an eye-opener, and the scenes were arranged with such cleverness!"
Definitely we will do again, and perhaps even choose a different route for different members of the group.

Post-Experience Thoughts
We all were impressed by how immersed and a part of their world we felt with this experience.
For Timothy: “The more I reflect on it, the more I appreciate the uniqueness and fun of The Sherlock experience. It starts in a cozy space where the audience is closely assembled and briefed before the theatrical journey begins. We were then guided to a spacious hall, where the first taste of the immersive experience began: cast members interacted with each other closely among the audience. This transitioned to another expansive area equipped with a stage, where a live theatrical performance unfolded, seamlessly extending into the audience space and introducing various intriguing characters.
Soon you realize it's all a bit like '24' meeting 'Choose Your Own Adventure' - where the events are now unfolding in real time, and you have a choice to make: which character do you follow? Which part of the story do you wish to see? And do you want to poke around and be a detective yourself, to figure things out before Holmes and Watson, or do you just want to be a spectator and follow a cast member of interest around?
Since the action unfolded between two floors of the former shopping center, with characters moving from scene to scene over 90 minutes, there was a surprising amount of exercise involved as I went up and down the stairs, room to room. Admittedly, there also were some moments where I felt ‘stuck,’ unsure of what to do next. At these points, I acknowledged to myself that the experience is new, unfamiliar, and relatively experimental. But still a lot of fun. Even if you aren't a theatre buff, but want to experience something different, I think you'll really enjoy yourself.”
For Chia-Chi: "It's not enough to visit each facility just once; it's actually beneficial to experience each one several times! If possible, I'd love to bring more friends along for the fun. For instance, 'Identity V Immersive Chase' needs a group of six people, and 'Jack the Ripper' requires eight. It's definitely more enjoyable when everyone is actively involved."
And for Lee: "I really want to recommend it to friends so we can team up and conquer 'Identity V' together. Also, I'd love to experience 'The Sherlock' again. Next time, I plan to explore different spaces to see what events unfold!"
We are all excited to come again, with more friends, as some of the attractions would be incredible in a larger group!
