What is "teamLab Planets TOKYO DMM" in Toyosu, Tokyo?

teamLab Planets TOKYO DMM.com is an immersive museum created by the renowned digital art collective teamLab, featuring interactive installations that blend cutting-edge technology with art. Since opening in 2018, it has captivated visitors worldwide, earning a reputation as a one-of-a-kind digital art experience. In 2023, it set a Guinness World Record as the most-visited museum globally for a single art group.

Its appeal extends far beyond Japan, drawing international attention through social media. Between March and August 2023, approximately one million visitors from 182 countries and regions outside Japan explored teamLab Planets, making up 70% of its total guests. This overwhelming global popularity has solidified its status as a must-visit destination in Tokyo.

On January 22, 2025, teamLab Planets expanded its space by approximately 1.5 times, introducing three new interactive areas with an educational focus: Athletics Forest, Catching and Collecting Forest, and Future Park. While designed to captivate adults, these areas also provide an engaging experience for children, featuring playground-like elements, full-body movement activities, and interactive art that connects with smartphone apps.

With hands-on projects that enhance creativity and spatial awareness, the new areas offer an immersive learning experience that families can enjoy together.

・5-minute walk from Shijomae Station or Toyosu Market Station on the Yurikamome Line
・10-minute walk from Toyosu Station on the Tokyo Metro Yurakucho Line

For more access details from other stations, check here: https://teamlabplanets.dmm.com/guide/access_method#train

If you're traveling from various locations in Tokyo, your best option is to head toward Toyosu Station on the Tokyo Metro Yurakucho Line. From there, it's a 10-minute walk to teamLab Planets. The pedestrian walkways are easy to navigate, making for a pleasant stroll in good weather. However, Toyosu Station has a complex layout with multiple exits, which can be confusing.

Since Toyosu Station on the Yurakucho Line is directly connected to Toyosu Station on the Yurikamome Line, it's easier to follow signs leading to the Yurikamome instead of searching for the correct exit. If you're unfamiliar with the area, we recommend transferring to the Yurikamome Line at Toyosu Station and riding one stop to Shin-Toyosu Station—from there, teamLab Planets is right in front of you!

Shuttle Bus from Ginza (Available for Booking Online)
A great option is the paid shuttle bus operating between GINZA SIX and teamLab Planets. This hassle-free ride eliminates the need for transfers or walking, making it especially convenient for visitors with large luggage or families traveling with children.

Is a reservation necessary? What's the admission fee?

Tickets for teamLab Planets can be purchased online. While same-day tickets are available if there are open slots, weekends and holidays tend to sell out quickly, and your preferred entry time may already be full. With the opening of the new area, crowds are expected to be even larger.

Tickets can be booked up to three months in advance, so if you have a specific date and time in mind, it’s best to secure your tickets as soon as possible.

How long should I spend at teamLab Planets?

How long should I spend at teamLab Planets?

At teamLab Planets, there’s so much to see and do—taking photos, drawing, moving your body, and even wading into water up to your knees. With so many immersive experiences, you’ll want to take your time exploring.

While it depends on the individual, the LIVE JAPAN editorial team found that planning for at least 3 to 4 hours—about half a day—allows for a more enjoyable visit. Of course, you can extend your stay by taking breaks for lunch and spending even more time fully immersed in the experience.

What to wear and bring?

Unlike traditional museums where you simply observe artwork, teamLab Planets is a fully immersive, interactive experience. Visitors walk barefoot through various environments, including areas with water up to knee level and mirrored floors.

Because of this, pants are recommended over skirts, and clothing that allows you to roll up your pant legs easily is ideal. With the expanded new areas featuring climbing, sliding, and jumping, comfortable, flexible clothing is even more important. Shoes that are easy to take on and off will also make your visit smoother. Keep your belongings to a minimum and travel as light as possible for the best experience.

No need to worry about your belongings—free lockers are available to store everything securely. teamLab Planets also offers complimentary rental shorts and athletic shoes, allowing you to enjoy the experience without hesitation.

In the Water Area, towels are provided, so there’s no need to bring your own. However, since sizes are limited, you may want to bring a personal towel if needed.

Rental Shorts Available: Kids: 100 cm / Women: XS–XL / Men: S–6L

The only essential items to bring are those for capturing photos and videos. A camera or smartphone is a must, and bringing a power bank will ensure you don’t run out of power during your visit.

Please note that selfie sticks and tripods are not allowed inside the facility.

Can I go with my children? From what age?

There is no age restriction at teamLab Planets, however anyone under the age of 13 must be accompanied by an adult over 18.

With the ability to physically interact with the artworks, walk barefoot, and even step into water, teamLab Planets offers a fully immersive experience where visitors become part of the art itself. This makes it an especially exciting and engaging space for children to enjoy.

The new area also allows children to draw pictures, making it perfect for children who enjoy creative activities.

However, some areas within teamLab Planets feature dark spaces and uneven surfaces, which may feel intimidating for young children. To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience, it's a good idea to guide them carefully and provide reassurance as they explore.

For young children, the Water Area, where adults wade in up to their knees, may feel even deeper. It's best to choose appropriate clothing, and bringing a spare change of clothes can provide extra peace of mind. That said, the interactive water-based artworks are incredibly fun—kids are sure to love them!

Since this is an environment unlike everyday life, it encourages free exploration, creativity, and hands-on learning without the constraints of fixed ideas or expectations. This makes teamLab Planets an ideal destination for families with children.

Additionally, Toyosu is one of Tokyo’s most family-friendly areas, designed with child-friendly spaces and attractions. The area surrounding teamLab Planets also features various facilities where kids can play safely, making it a great spot for a smooth and enjoyable family outing.

Areas at teamLab Planets TOKYO DMM.com

Inside teamLab Planets, there are signs indicating different areas, but no set routes, guided paths, or official maps. This lack of a fixed structure is part of the experience—freely exploring at your own pace is what makes it so immersive.

The museum is primarily divided into Water, Garden, and the newly introduced Athletics Forest (opened on January 22, 2025), along with an Open Air outdoor section.

Water

The Water area consists of four massive immersive art spaces, where visitors walk barefoot and step into the water for a fully interactive experience.

Waterfall of Light Particles at the Top of an Incline

The moment you enter, you step directly into the water. As you ascend toward the waterfall, it feels as if you're being drawn into the artwork itself. The combination of flowing water and subtle fragrances heightens the senses, deepening the immersive experience.

Expanding Three-dimensional Existence in Transforming Space - Flattening 3 Colors and 9 Blurred Colors

As you move through a space filled with countless spheres, pushing and parting them, they emit sounds and change colors, transforming the entire environment into an ever-shifting spectacle.

The Infinite Crystal Universe

One of the most iconic installations at teamLab Planets, The Infinite Crystal Universe is a popular spot for visitors to share on social media and has even been featured in music videos. The dazzling light display continuously transforms, and using the dedicated app allows guests to interact and alter the visuals in real time.

Floating in the Falling Universe of Flowers

This artwork depicts the life cycle of flowers, from blooming to falling. Visitors can sit or lie down to fully immerse themselves in the ever-changing floral scenery, creating the surreal sensation of floating within a world of flowers.

Drawing on the Water Surface Created by the Dance of Koi and People - Infinity

The immersive artwork Drawing on the Water Surface Created by the Dance of Koi and People - Infinity allows visitors to wade in water up to their knees. As koi swim across the water’s surface, they transform into blooming flowers upon contact with people, creating a continuously evolving, dreamlike scene.

This artwork evolves throughout the year, with different seasonal flowers appearing depending on the time of visit. During summer, for example, hydrangeas and morning glories bloom across the water’s surface. Because the scene changes in real time as visitors move, no two experiences are ever the same—truly a once-in-a-lifetime encounter each time you step in.

The water temperature is also adjusted according to the season, ensuring a comfortable and refreshing experience no matter when you visit.

Garden

Garden

Introduced in July 2021, the Garden area allows visitors to immerse themselves in nature, surrounded by flowers, moss, and other organic elements.

One of the two artworks in this space is Floating Flower Garden: Flowers and I are of the Same Root, the Garden and I are One, a mesmerizing installation centered around the theme of flowers.

The other artwork in the Garden area focuses on moss: Moss Garden of Resonating Microcosms - Solidified Light Color, Dusk to Dawn.

Floating Flower Garden: Flowers and I are of the Same Root, the Garden and I are One

A breathtaking garden filled with real orchids, this installation is truly mesmerizing! Over 13,000 blooming orchids are suspended from above, creating a floating floral paradise. The mirrored floors and walls reflect the flowers in every direction, immersing visitors in a dreamlike world where orchids seem to stretch endlessly into the sky.

The seamless reflections blur the boundaries between floor and ceiling, making it impossible to distinguish where one ends and the other begins. In this endless floral space, there are no restrictions—no clear limits between the artwork and yourself. Visitors are free to immerse themselves fully, drifting through the flowers in a world without defined edges.

The experience of immersing yourself within the flowers is the essence of teamLab’s art—a truly breathtaking, photo-worthy moment.

Adding to the sensory experience, the fragrance within the installation changes depending on the time of day, offering a unique atmosphere in the morning, afternoon, and evening.

The flowers gently rise and fall, creating an ever-shifting space. As visitors move forward, the orchids part naturally, making way for them—an effect achieved through motion sensors that detect human presence. When no one is in the space, all the flowers remain lowered.

Everywhere you look, it's flowers upon flowers upon flowers. The sheer beauty of the scene is so surreal that it makes you wonder, "Does such a blissful place really exist in the real world?"

The mesmerizing beauty of the flowers makes it impossible to stop taking photos—you could easily lose track of time in this enchanting space.

Resonating Microcosms in the Moss Garden - Solidified Light Color, Dusk to Dawn

The large outdoor garden installation, Resonating Microcosms in the Moss Garden - Solidified Light Color, Dusk to Dawn, is enveloped in a soft mist, creating a mystical atmosphere reminiscent of a sea of clouds. The ethereal setting enhances the dreamlike quality of the space, making it feel almost otherworldly.

Countless ovoid (egg-shaped) objects are scattered throughout the space. When pushed by a person’s hand or swayed by the wind, they tilt and emit a sound. This sound then gradually ripples outward, triggering a chain reaction as it spreads from one ovoid to the next, creating a mesmerizing interplay of light and sound.

Each ovoid contains internal lighting, and at night, they begin to glow, illuminating the garden with a soft, ambient light. When touched, the ovoids change color, triggering a chain reaction that spreads from one to another, creating a mesmerizing display of shifting hues throughout the space.

Moss has long been an essential element of Japanese aesthetics and traditional gardens, thriving in Japan’s humid climate. It has been used for centuries to create tranquil, natural landscapes, deeply rooted in the country’s artistic and cultural heritage. In recent years, moss has gained renewed attention, with trends like kokedama (moss ball arrangements) becoming increasingly popular.

Moss is a living, ever-changing plant that transforms in color and shape depending on the season, weather, and humidity. The moss covering this space is no exception—constantly growing and evolving, offering visitors a new discovery with every visit.

Of course, the weather and the time of day will also affect the overall impression, so it's likely to look completely different from day to day.

3 New Areas Opened in January 2025: Athletics Forest, Catching and Collecting Forest, Future Park

Athletics Forest

Based on the concept of "perceiving the world through the body and thinking in three dimensions," this interactive space encourages full-body movement and exploration. As visitors engage with the environment, the structures and elements around them dynamically shift and transform in response to their actions.

Catching and Collecting Forest

Based on the concept of "Catch, Collect, Research," this interactive project allows visitors to explore the forest and use a smartphone app to capture and observe extinct animals that appear in the space.

Future Park

Based on the concept of "co-creation," this interactive project allows visitors to collaborate in shaping the artwork. Drawings come to life in three-dimensional form, moving freely through the space. Visitors can control them via smartphone or watch as they interact with creations made by others, resulting in unexpected and dynamic movements.

Open-Air Area

Universe of Fire Particles Haunting the Sky and Earth

This outdoor artwork, Universe of Fire Particles Haunting the Sky and Earth, is displayed right in front of the entrance to teamLab Planets. As visitors stand before the pillars, the flames dynamically shift and change shape in response to their presence, making it a highly interactive experience.

However, the true brilliance of this piece goes beyond just its interactivity.

By downloading the "Distributed Fire" smartphone app, visitors can carry the fire with them and even share it with others, much like a digital torch relay, extending the experience beyond the physical installation.

Even after leaving the museum, the artwork extends into daily life, making it feel as though the flames have truly "possessed" the world around you—perfectly capturing the essence of its name. The ability to take the experience home and interact with it beyond the museum is truly a groundbreaking and immersive concept.

Orchid Glass House is a dedicated space for re-growing orchids that have wilted from the Floating Flower Garden exhibit. Opened alongside the new area on January 22, 2025, this tranquil space allows visitors to enjoy tea or alcoholic beverages while admiring the artwork.

Please note that, for safety reasons, children under 12 are not permitted to enter.

Living Art Store

The Living Art Store is a shop where visitors can purchase orchids that have been re-grown in the Orchid Glass House. Rather than discarding the plants used in the artwork, they are given new life here, allowing them to continue thriving beyond the exhibition.

The One Stroke Bench may appear intricately interwoven, but it is actually a continuous, single-stroke structure seamlessly connected throughout. Visitors can relax here, taking a break while enjoying ramen or café menu items in this uniquely designed seating area.
