For Long Distances: The JR Hokkaido Rail Pass
For longer journeys, the JR Hokkaido Rail Pass is a great option. Available in 5- and 7-day versions, it offers unlimited travel on JR Hokkaido trains, including Limited Express services. If you're planning trips to destinations like Hakodate, the pass can quickly pay for itself.

For Rural Exploring: Renting a Car
For exploring beyond the city, renting a car is often the best choice. Popular spots such as Hakkenzan Orchard, Moerenuma Park, and Jozankei Onsen are easier to reach by car than by public transportation.

For Central Sapporo: Stick to Public Transit
If you're staying in central Sapporo around Odori Park, Tanukikoji Shopping Street, and Susukino, public transit is usually the better option. The subway system is fast, convenient, and often more practical than driving and paying for city-center parking.

On June 5, Shiroi Koibito Park will open its new garden location, kicking off a series of fun, flowery festivities lasting all through the summer. The Flower & Fruit Sweets Garden launched in conjunction with opening day of the new garden, and lasts until September 2, in which visitors can enjoy a delicious array of garden themed sweets like Colorful Fruit Brulee Pancakes and Sunflower Parfait.

Then from June 22–28 Shiroi Koibito holds its Thank You Festival, with various activities, performances, and an all-you-can-eat sweets buffet, happening 3 times per day every day of the event period. (Reservations required; see website for details)

The English-style Rose Garden in the courtyard of Shiroi Koibito Park also reaches its peak every year from mid-June to early July, with around 200 varieties of roses and colorful tulips coming into bloom through August, so you'll definitely want to stop by!

Jozankei Nature Luminarie is a long-running premium night event held in the Jozankei hot spring area from June 1 to October 31. The event uses the rich natural walking path from Futami Park to Futami Suspension Bridge as its stage, with the creative group NAKED producing projection mapping, illumination, sound, and light effects. Its most strategically distinctive feature is that admission is limited to guests staying in the Jozankei area.

By turning a nighttime illuminated walk into an incentive to stay overnight, it is designed to support the local economy through tourism. As tickets are only given out to those staying at a Jozankei Onsen accommodation facility, you’ll need to bring your accommodation ticket to enter. If you’re not sure where to stay, don’t worry–we’ve recommended a couple spots just below!

Held in the Country Garden at Takino Suzuran Hillside Park, this early-June program lets visitors dig up tulip bulbs after the spring bloom season ends and take them home for free. The event is limited to the first 2,000 participants on-site and gives the park's seasonal flower display a second life after the viewing period. For visitors, it is a hands-on way to join the park's plant cycle and enjoy the bulbs again in their own gardens or planters the following year.

At Hakkenzan Orchard in Sapporo's Minami Ward, visitors can enjoy strawberry and cherry picking from June into July at the foot of Mt. Hakkenzan. The orchard is close enough to central Sapporo for an easy day trip, yet it offers open mountain scenery and seasonal harvesting in a rural setting. Barbecue, horseback riding, and nearby winery-style leisure options also make the area a compact example of urban-edge agri-tourism, where local farming and outdoor recreation are linked in one visit.

The Hokkaido Shrine Festival, also known as the Sapporo Festival, is one of the city's major annual traditional events, held every June 14-16. The festival includes the Yoimiya evening festival, the main annual rite, and the June 16 procession, when portable shrines, colorful floats, and around 1,000 participants in formal festival attire move through central Sapporo in a scene reminiscent of an old court procession. Festival stalls around Nakajima Park add a lively public-festival atmosphere to the shrine's formal rites.

In conjunction with this festive period, the Historical Village of Hokkaido comes to life with displays and hands-on experiences from June 1–16, 2026, which you can check out here (also introduced later in this article).

Historical Village of Hokkaido marks the Hokkaido Shrine Festival season with displays and compact hands-on programs connected to older festival customs. Inside the open-air museum of relocated Meiji, Taisho, and early Showa buildings, visitors can see seasonal shrine-festival banners and try mini experiences such as dyeing, straw craft, and old-style metal-plate printing. Rather than presenting history through displays alone, the program lets visitors handle tools and materials while learning how earlier communities celebrated and worked.

Flower Festa Sapporo is one of the city's signature early-summer events for flowers, greenery, and garden culture, held in Odori Park from late June to early July. Since its launch in 1993, the event has included garden displays, flower objects, horticultural goods, and even tractor experience programs. One central program is Gardening Koshien, where agricultural high school students present garden designs based on what they have learned. Through this event, younger generations contribute directly to urban greening and design, making it significant not only as a flower festival but also as a form of environmental education on the future of sustainable urban living.

From June 1 to August 31, F VILLAGE SUMMER FEST 2026 supported by Satsudora turns Hokkaido Ballpark F Village into a full summer playground. Visitors can explore F Village’s year-round attractions, from the 70-meter-high ES CON FIELD SKY WALK and outdoor thrills at F VILLAGE ADVENTURE PARK to Lipovitan Kids PLAYLOT by BørneLund and more.

For those who stop by on June 12–13, you can even take a tour of F Village by horse carriage (additional fees apply)! With food, festival stalls, family activities, and sports, there’s plenty to do whether it’s a game day or not!

GLEAT brings a professional wrestling and combat-sports event to Sapporo E-One Stadium on June 6. The promotion combines fast-paced match styles with contemporary entertainment staging, creating an indoor spectator event for early-summer Sapporo. Because the event is held indoors, it also works as a reliable evening option during a travel season that can still be affected by rain, temperature changes, or other weather shifts.

The Sapporo Olympic Museum at the foot of the Okurayama Ski Jump Stadium introduces the legacy of the 1972 Sapporo Winter Olympics through interactive sports exhibits. And while it is indeed open year-round, why not pay a visit this June in honor of the founding of the IOC on June 23, 1894?

Visitors can use digital simulators to try the physical feeling of ski jumping, bobsleigh, and figure skating spins, making it a year-round sports-learning facility even during summer travel. The museum gives summer visitors a way to connect with Sapporo's identity as an international winter-sports city regardless of the season.

The SAPPORO TV Tower stair-climbing event lets visitors take the outdoor staircase up to the observation deck instead of using the elevator. Held mainly on weekends and holidays from May to June, the climb rises about 90 meters above ground and turns the tower's central-city viewpoint into a physical challenge. Those who finish receive a limited stair-climbing certificate, making the event an easy urban micro-adventure for children, adults, and travelers who want a more active way to see the city.

Pokemon x Kogei at the Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art brings together the global Pokemon franchise and Japanese craft traditions, with traditional craft showcased through over 90 unique works made by 20 different artists. Works by leading artisans reinterpret familiar Pokemon through materials such as ceramics, metalwork, textiles, lacquer, and more, bringing younger visitors, anime fans, and inbound travelers together in a museum setting through the love of a beloved pop-culture icon.

For those visiting on June 14, you’ll even have the chance for a photo-op with everyone’s favorite Pikachu, dressed for the occasion in an adorable kimono.

Starting in June, the Sapporo Beer Museum Premium Tour is launching a new paid guided tour in celebration of its 150th anniversary, combining historical storytelling with tasting. Inside the beautiful red-brick building, originally constructed in 1890 as a sugar factory and now designated as an Important Cultural Property, visitors learn in depth about the pioneering development of beer brewing in Japan through guided interpretation.

At the end of the tour, guests can taste a recreation of an early Sapporo beer recipe, the Fukkoku Sapporo Seibakushu, together with the modern standard beer. The result is an adult-oriented entertainment experience that combines history with refined food-and-drink enjoyment.

The Historical Village of Hokkaido offers late-June workshops that pass on older craft techniques through hands-on making. General participants work under the guidance of instructors and craft specialists, using natural materials such as straw to make items including straw sandals and traditional wooden toys. Sapporo Hitsujigaoka Observation Hill's summer vacation event is aimed at families during the school break. Against the familiar backdrop of the Clark statue, open grassland, and wide city views, the venue offers craft workshops and independent-study-friendly programs for children. The event gives travelers a pastoral Sapporo view while also serving local families as a summer learning and recreation space where children can make, observe, and explore.

The Tanuki Festival's night bargain and Tanuki Mikoshi continues bringing the festive energy to Tanukikoji Shopping Street through August. The Tanuki Festival is a large-scale summer event held across the historic Tanukikoji Shopping Street, which has been part of central Sapporo for more than 150 years. Sapporo Hachigatsu (August) Festival is an artistic, contemporary bon odori festival held in the city center and designed around music, dance, and community. The venue is striking, with a giant furoshiki-style art piece spread across the plaza. Participants dance to a variety of bon odori numbers, including the original Sapporo August Festival Ondo, accompanied by live performances by the Sapporo August Festival Special Big Band. More than a festival to watch from the sidelines, it’s a modern community event where local residents and visitors from around the world can sing, dance, and celebrate side by side.

The TxT GARAGE Makomanai Fireworks Festival is one of Sapporo's largest summer fireworks events, held around Makomanai Sekisui Heim Stadium with an overwhelming launch of 22,000 fireworks. Leading Japanese fireworks companies take part, including Beniya Aoki Fireworks and Nihonbashi Marutamaya, which has worked on productions for many theme parks. It’s an arena-style stadium show with loud music, bright lasers, and exciting flame effects erupting from all sides of the arena, all synchronized with the fireworks down to fractions of a second.

The Doshin-UHB Fireworks Festival is a classic Sapporo summer fireworks display held along the Toyohira River, between Minami-ohashi Bridge and Horohira Bridge. Around 4,000 fireworks, including brilliant starmines and creative wide-shot displays, color Sapporo’s clear summer night sky. Hundreds of thousands of spectators watch for free along the riverbanks, while others take part in rooftop summer campaigns at various facilities, such as Aeon Mall Sapporo Naebo and nearby hotels. It has become an established major lifestyle event that brings both residents and tourists out into the city to enjoy summer.

In 2026, Hakodate Racecourse celebrates its 130th anniversary with a summer season full of live racing, commemorative displays, and special race-day events. Running alongside the Hakodate racing season from June 13 to July 19, the anniversary program gives horse racing fans a chance to experience one of Japan’s most scenic racecourses, where spectators can enjoy races with views of the sea. Visitors can look for 130th-anniversary panels, photo spots, stamp rallies, character greetings, horse-related experiences and programs, and special collaborations.

Major race days include the Hakodate Sprint Stakes on June 13, the 130th-anniversary Hakodate Kinen on June 28, and the Hakodate Nisai Stakes on July 19, making this a strong summer stop for racing fans

The Kids Planetarium from Age 0 program is designed as an innovative, barrier-free, and inclusive educational program designed specifically for families with babies and very young kids. Unlike ordinary planetarium shows that require silence, this program is built around a gentle shared understanding that it’s natural for babies to make noise and cry. Seating, softly adjusted volume, and lighting that never goes completely dark makes it possible to support young children’s first science experience in a safe, comfortable, and low-stress environment.

The Sea Fountain at Moerenuma Park, one of Sapporo’s best-known art parks, is an overwhelming water sculpture positioned at the heart of the park. During the summer season from June to August, daily fountain programs include a main show in which water jets rise dynamically as high as 25 meters, as well as mystical nighttime programs with lighting. Designed within Isamu Noguchi’s master plan of making the entire park a single sculpture, the fountain turns the movement of water and light across the broad landscape into a form of artistic expression.

Held in summer at Atelier Marble in a quiet residential area of Sapporo’s Teine Ward, this atelier-style special exhibition combines wooden toys and photography. The exhibition brings together the analog world of wood and glass marbles by wooden toy artist Kaneko Shuhei with photographic art that softly captures light and shadow. For modern kids and adults surrounded by digital screens, it’s a valuable chance to engage with wooden mechanisms and smooth, colorful marbles while gently reactivating the senses and creativity in a personal art space.

From mid-July to August 13, the Welfare-Sponsored Sapporo Odori Beer Garden appears in central Sapporo’s Odori Park, with an overwhelming scale of about 13,000 seats. It is one of Japan’s largest outdoor beer gardens and is widely known internationally. Visitors can enjoy freshly poured cold draft beer from Sapporo Beer and other major domestic brewers, along with craft beers from around the world, under Sapporo’s cool, dry summer sky.

Hokkai Bon Odori brings traditional summer dance to the center of Sapporo during the Sapporo Summer Festival period. Participants circle the yagura stage to dance to familiar festival music, creating an atmosphere that is easy for visitors to watch or join. As the powerful live singing of Hokkai Bon Uta and the beat of taiko drums ring through the night air, thousands to tens of thousands of dancers form layers of circles around the tower and step in rhythm.

Held for three days from August 7–9, with the main streets of Susukino turned into a pedestrian zone, the Susukino Festival is one of Sapporo’s biggest summer nighttime events. Around 100 food and drink stalls crowd the streets and bring the nighttime energy of Susukino to its peak.
