In the heart of West Shinjuku, where skyscrapers pierce the sky, lies a sanctuary of silence. On April 6, 2026, the traditional tea room Shofuan on the 10th floor of the Keio Plaza Hotel Main Building will reopen. Looking down on the city's hustle, you can enjoy delicate Wagashi (Japanese sweets) and aromatic Matcha with expert English explanations provided by a tea master. Experience the 450-year-old spirit of the "Way of Tea" in a luxurious, tranquil atmosphere.
A Sanctuary of Peace Where Samurai Laid Down Their Swords

In the 16th century, Sen no Rikyu perfected the Japanese Way of Tea. For the samurai, the tea room was the only place where they could lay down their swords and return to being simple humans. The small entrance, "Nijiriguchi," required even powerful lords to bow, symbolizing equality inside. Focusing on a single bowl of Matcha is the essence of mindfulness. With detailed English explanations, you can deeply understand this philosophy without worrying about the language barrier.

Sharpen Your Senses: Matcha and Wagashi with English Guidance

At Shofuan, Tea Master Sentou Souei Yano provides explanations directly in English. Two programs are available.
1. Tea Ceremony Experience (approx. 1 hour): Watch the master's performance. Enjoy seasonal Wagashi and Matcha while listening to English commentary on the spirit of "Ichigo Ichie."
2. Matcha Making Experience (approx. 1.5–2 hours): An active program where you whisk your own tea. Receive direct English coaching from the master as you discover the unique taste of the tea you created yourself.
