February Festivals in Tokyo

The 92nd Shimokitazawa Tengu Festival (Shimokitazawa)

Setsubun, the day before the start of spring, falls on February 3 in 2024. It's a time for rituals to ward off evil spirits and pray for everyone's health and happiness. Practices include throwing beans while saying 'Demons out, luck in,' and eating Ehomaki, a special sushi roll. The main event of the three-day Shimokitazawa Tengu Festival is the 'Tengu Procession,' held on the second day, February 3 (Saturday), starting at 2 PM. Participants, including large and small Tengu, mountain priests, and lucky men and women, parade through the shopping district, scattering beans. A highlight is the 'Tengu Mask Cart' carrying a giant Tengu mask, measuring 3 meters tall and 2 meters wide.

On the third day, there's the 'Tengu Lucky Beans - Guess the Weight!' event, where participants guess the weight of beans scooped with a ladle, open to tourists as well. Interestingly, in this festival, instead of saying 'Demons out,' the focus is on inviting luck in by chanting 'Luck in' three times during bean-throwing.

The Setsubun Festival at Senso-ji Temple in Asakusa is renowned as Tokyo's first major Setsubun celebration. On February 3, starting at 10 AM, bean throwing by children from Senso-ji Kindergarten takes place in front of the main hall. This is followed by two more bean-throwing sessions at noon and 2 PM on a special stage to the right of the main hall, led by 'Toshiotoko,' men who have the same zodiac sign as the current year. Before the bean throwing, these men, dressed in 'Kamishimo,' traditional samurai attire from the Edo period, and carrying lanterns with their names, will parade through the temple grounds. Those interested in watching should arrive at the stage slightly before the start. The beans, packed in bags, are scattered, and it's considered lucky to catch them. Even if you don't catch any, blessed 'Fuku-mame' (lucky beans) are available for purchase on the grounds. Besides bean throwing, the temple also hosts a performance of 'Fukuju no Mai' (Dance of the Seven Lucky Gods), one of the three great temple dances of Senso-ji.

Setsubun Tsuina-shiki Ceremony at Zojoji Temple (Shiba Park)

Zojoji Temple's Setsubun event, 'Setsubun Tsuina-shiki,' begins with a procession called 'Oneri' through the temple grounds, with the important cultural asset, the San'enmon Gate, as a backdrop. Leading the procession are men and women of the current year's zodiac sign ('Toshiotoko' and 'Toshiotome') dressed in traditional 'Kamishimo,' followed by brightly clad kindergarten children and dogs from the pet club. Bean throwing starts around noon on a special stage. Besides the Toshiotoko and Toshiotome, sumo stablemasters, high-ranking wrestlers, athletes, and celebrities also participate in bean throwing. The temple also sells 'Fuku-mame' (lucky beans) for 1,000 yen and 'Fuku-masu' (lucky boxes) for 2,000 yen (limited quantities). Events include mochi pounding and 'Oni Mondou,' where children from Meitoku Kindergarten throw beans at oni (demons) on stage.

General public can also participate as Toshiotoko and Toshiotome (advance application required, fee-based, details here). On the day, participants wear Kamishimo, join the Oneri procession, pray for misfortune removal in front of the temple's 'Black Amida Hall,' and throw beans from the stage.

At 2 PM, a ritual called 'Tsuina-shiki' is held in the main hall to purify and pray for good fortune, followed by bean throwing starting at 3 PM. Participants often include professional wrestlers, sumo wrestlers, and martial artists, who throw approximately one ton of beans from a 50-meter-wide special stage. The Kawazu Cherry Blossoms, blooming annually from early February to early March in Kawazu, Shizuoka Prefecture, is an early-blooming cherry blossom known for its large, pink flowers. During the festival, food stalls and souvenir vendors are set up, and various events take place. There are also 'Night Sakura Light-ups' from 6 PM to 9 Pm at two locations: downstream of Tatehashi and Mine Onsen Sakura Tunnel. Besides the river, it's recommended to view the cherry blossoms from the viewing platform at Nehando in Izu and Kawazu Castle Ruins Park.
