What is Asakusa about?
Sitting on the banks of the Sumida River, Asakusa is synonymous with Sensoji Temple. Many of Sensoji Temple’s main sights are amongst some of Tokyo’s most famous landmarks, particularly the imposing Kaminarimon Gate, the long shopping street of Nakamise Dori and the temple’s pagoda. Hugely popular with both tourists and Tokyoites alike, Sensoji draws millions of visitors every year.
Surrounding Sensoji Temple is a network of vibrant streets, each lined with a variety of shops - ideal for picking up souvenirs - as well as a great range of local bars and restaurants. Asakusa is also a place that loves a celebration, being the location of one of Tokyo’s most famous festivals, the Asakusa Sanja Matsuri (held in May). The neighborhood also takes on a Latin American feel each September during the Asakusa Samba Carnival. The carnival sees a taste of Rio descend on Tokyo as a whole host of colorful parades and floats pass along Kaminarimon Dori.
Is Asakusa a good place to stay?
Asakusa is one of Tokyo's historic neighborhoods and a great place to stay if you are visiting Tokyo for the first time.
Situated just to the north of many of Tokyo’s most popular neighborhoods, there are plenty of reasons to choose to stay in Asakusa.
The area is an ideal spot for venturing out to see the rest of the city. Well served by public transport, areas such as Ueno, Akihabara, Shibuya, and Shinjuku are all within easy reach. Asakusa has excellent access to both Narita and Haneda airports.
Just across the Sumida River from Asakusa is the Tokyo Skytree, where you can enjoy stunning views of Tokyo. You can also take a cruise along the Sumida River from Asakusa all the way to Odaiba, the entertainment island located in Tokyo Bay.
Getting to Asakusa from Tokyo
The easiest way of getting from Tokyo Station to Asakusa Station is to take the JR Yamanote Line to Ueno Station, then transfer to the Tokyo Metro Ginza Line to the final stop, Asakusa. The trip takes around 20 minutes.
- Getting around Tokyo from Asakusa is easy, with three train stations in the area.
- While two of these stations are called Asakusa Station, they each serve different subway or train lines, which can be confusing.
- The Tokyo Metro Ginza Line and Toei Asakusa Subway Line pass through the Asakusa Station located on Kaminarimon Dori near Sensoji Temple.
- The Tokyo Metro Ginza Line provides direct trains to Ueno, Ginza, and Shibuya, while the Toei Asakusa Line runs services to Narita and Haneda international airports.
- The Tsukuba Express serves the second Asakusa Station located on Kokusai Dori, offering direct trains to Akihabara and out to Tsukuba City.
- Finally, Tobu Asakusa Station, located on the corner of Kaminarimon Dori and Umamichi Dori to the east of Sensoji Temple, provides direct trains to great day-trip destinations north of Tokyo such as Nikko, famous for its beautiful temples and shrines.
