A Hill That Blends Seamlessly with the Sky

At Hitachi Seaside Park in Ibaraki, the gently sloping “Miharashi Hill” is now covered in approximately 5.3 million nemophila flowers. On clear days, the view feels almost surreal, with the pale blue blossoms blending into the sky on the horizon.
The flowers reached full bloom on April 16, and recent sunny weather has drawn large crowds eager to see this fleeting seasonal spectacle. As the breeze moves across the hill, the tiny blossoms ripple like waves, creating a calming, almost dreamlike atmosphere.

Nemophila, often called “Baby Blue Eyes,” are delicate annual flowers originally from North America. Each bloom measures just 2–3 cm across, growing on low plants about 10–20 cm tall.

Up close, you’ll notice their soft blue petals and white centers. But step back, and those millions of small flowers merge into a vast, immersive landscape of color. It’s this contrast, from delicate detail to overwhelming scale, that makes the scene so memorable.

The park has been cultivating nemophila here since 2002, and 2026 marks the 25th year of this beloved spring tradition.
When to Visit
The best viewing period runs from April 11 to April 30, with peak conditions expected between April 16 and April 25. Full bloom is likely to continue through around April 25, with plenty of flowers remaining into the end of the month.
For the most striking views, aim for a clear day when the blue of the flowers mirrors the sky above.

It’s an easy day trip from Tokyo, and right now, the timing couldn’t be better.
