The museum is situated on the land where there used to be the Sakura Castle in Sakura City, Chiba. The grand-scale museum stands on the huge premises of 130,000 square meters in area. The museum, run by the Inter-University Research Institute Corporation, researches and exhibits comprehensively on Japanese history and folklore. Currently, the museum owns approximately 230,000 materials, which are widely used as a shared heritage. The facility consists of six galleries according to the historic, thematic events of each historical era. Each gallery has real, historical materials, intricate replicas, and restored models along with their specific explanations so that the visitors can easily understand each exhibit. The museum offers periodical special exhibitions focused on specific themes. To get to the museum, take the Chiba Green Bus bound for the Tamachi-shako Terminal from the JR Sakura Station and get off at either the Kokuritsu-hakubutsukan-iriguchi (the National Museum Entrance) or the Kokuritsu-minzoku-hakubutsukan (the National Museum of Japanese Folklore) bus stop. It is a 15-minute walk from the Keisei Line Sakura Station.
