This Popular Narita Airport Tour Is Back After 6 Years, and It Makes Layovers Way More Fun
- Written by: LIVE JAPAN Editor
Got a few hours to spare at Narita Airport? Instead of spending your entire layover browsing duty-free shops or waiting at the gate, you could soon be exploring an old temple town, dressing in kimono, discovering rural Japan, or even learning how to be a ninja.
After a six-year hiatus, the Narita Airport Transit & Stay Program is making a full comeback on October 1, 2026. Designed for international transit passengers and travelers staying around Narita Airport, the program connects visitors with six nearby cities and towns for bite-sized experiences of Japanese history, culture, nature, and food.
And this time, there are even more adventurous options to choose from.
Turn Your Narita Layover Into a Local Japan Experience
The Narita Airport Transit & Stay Program previously offered tours accompanied by volunteer guides, but operations were suspended during the pandemic.
With international travel to Japan booming again, the program is being relaunched to introduce travelers to the areas surrounding Narita Airport. Along with the returning standard tours, a new series of paid experiences will let visitors take part in festivals, cultural activities, and other experiences that go well beyond conventional airport sightseeing.
There are two main types of tours to look out for.
1. Transit & Stay Standard Tours: Explore 6 Towns With a Volunteer Guide
Starting October 1, the Transit & Stay Standard Tours take travelers beyond the airport for around 3–5 hours with a volunteer guide. The guide itself is free, although travelers are responsible for expenses incurred during the tour. Six different areas are featured, each offering a very different taste of Japan.
Tour 1 (Narita City): Temples and an Atmospheric Shopping Street
・Time Required: 3 hours
You don't have to travel all the way into central Tokyo to experience traditional Japan. Narita's tour takes visitors to Naritasan Shinshoji Temple, a temple with around 1,000 years of history, before exploring its lively Omotesando approach lined with shops and restaurants. It's an easy choice if your idea of Japan involves temples, old streets, and a little souvenir hunting.
Tour 2 (Katori City): Step Into an Edo-Era Streetscape
・Time Required: 5 hours
Want something that feels a little further removed from the airport? In Katori, travelers can explore Sawara, an old riverside town known for its Edo-period atmosphere and traditional crafts. It's a chance to see a slower, more historical side of Chiba that many international visitors simply pass over on their way into Tokyo.
Tour 3 (Tako Town): Swap Airport Terminals for the Countryside
・Time Required: 4 hours
For a complete change of scenery, the Tako Town tour heads into rural landscapes of satoyama and rice fields. Think open skies, peaceful countryside, and a chance to experience the sort of everyday Japanese scenery that's difficult to squeeze into a typical Tokyo itinerary.
Tour 4 (Shibayama Town): Geek Out Over Aviation
・Time Required: 4 hours
Not quite ready to leave airplanes behind? Shibayama's tour takes visitors into the world of aviation at the Museum of Aeronautical Sciences, making this an especially fitting excursion when your day already revolves around flying.
Tour 5 (Sakae Town): Dress in Kimono and Travel Back in Time
・Time Required: 5 hours
Here's one for anyone who wants photos that look very different from their airport selfies. The Sakae Town experience heads to Boso no Mura, where visitors can learn how to wear a yukata and immerse themselves in an atmosphere inspired by historical Japan.
Tour 6 (Kozaki Town): Discover Japan's Fermentation Culture
・Time Required: 6 hours
Kozaki offers perhaps the most deliciously niche option of the bunch. Known for fermentation, the town's tour includes a sake brewery visit, introducing travelers to traditional brewing and a slower side of Japanese food culture.
2. Transit & Stay Plus Tours: Go Deeper With Festivals, Ninjas, Temple Stays and More

New for the relaunch are Transit & Stay Plus Tours, paid half-day or full-day experiences led by professional guides.
Rather than simply sightseeing, these tours focus on special activities closely connected to the local area. And the first one actually kicks off before the standard program officially returns.
September 5: Help Pull a Festival Float
The first Plus Tour launches on September 5, giving participants the chance to help pull a traditional festival float during the Sogo Reido Omachiya Festival.
Instead of simply watching a Japanese festival from the sidelines, travelers can actually become part of the experience.
November 7: Try Being a Ninja
Yes, really. A ninja experience at Boso no Mura is planned for November 7, offering visitors the opportunity to try something considerably more memorable than another afternoon in an airport lounge.
November 19: Experience Temple Life
On November 19, visitors can take part in a temple stay and Buddhist training experience at Shibayama Nioson.
For travelers interested in Japanese spirituality and temple culture, this promises a much deeper experience than simply stopping outside a temple for photos.
More Experiences Are on the Way
The lineup doesn't stop there. From November, plans include a visit to Katori Shrine combined with cultural experiences around Sawara, while indigo dyeing and harvest experiences are also being prepared. Dates and locations for the latter two were still being arranged when the program was announced. More paid tours are expected to be added in the future.
Your Narita Layover Might Just Become Part of the Trip
Narita Airport is usually treated as the beginning or end of a Japan vacation. But this revived program makes a good case for treating the area around the airport as part of the trip itself.
Whether you'd rather wander an old temple street, explore the countryside, learn about sake brewing, dress in traditional clothing, join a festival, or try your hand at being a ninja, travelers with extra time around Narita now have plenty of reasons to venture beyond the terminal.
Sometimes a few spare hours might be all you need for one more Japan adventure.
