From March 20 to May 10, Sendai Umino-Mori Aquarium presents its spring limited-time event, Underwater Hanami. At the heart of the event is the special Sakura Aquascape tank, where around 250 cherry anthias are displayed in a setting designed to evoke the feeling of cherry blossom viewing before the actual sakura season begins. The program is especially notable for linking the fish’s visual characteristics and biological development with the Japanese cultural idea of hanami, creating an experience that is both educational and entertaining.

Also at the Sendai Umino-Mori Aquarium, as the finale of its 10th anniversary year, there will be a collaboration featuring world-famous picture-book author Eric Carle from March 6 to May 31. Built around The Very Hungry Caterpillar, the event blends Carle’s colorful visual world with the aquarium’s living displays in a family-focused experiential program. Yagiyama Benyland, one of Sendai’s best-known amusement parks, opened for the 2026 season on March 7, introducing new convenient services such as cashless payment options for increased accessibility and visitor comfort. Character shows, including the “Super Space Sheriff Gavan Infinity Show” and “Hagashin Riser Ryuu,” are also part of the early spring lineup, making it a great choice for families during the spring break.

At Sendai Anpanman Children’s Museum & Mall, the stage event “We Love Sansa Taiso!” continues at the Yanase Takashi Theater from January 4 to April 13. The program encourages physical movement through dance and exercise together with everyone’s favorite Anpanman characters, for an event where kids and parents can enjoy active play as a shared experience.

From March 21 to 27, Takekoma Shrine in Iwanuma, one of Japan’s Three Great Inari Shrines, holds its Hatsuuma Grand Festival. This is the shrine’s most important annual observance, drawing worshippers from across the Tohoku region who come to pray for business prosperity, family safety, and abundant harvests. Easily accessible from central Sendai, the energy and crowds during the festival serve as a ritual announcement that spring has truly begun in the Sendai area.

At Tsutsujigaoka Park in Miyagino Ward, the early phase of the Sakura Festival begins in late March. Although the 2026 blossom forecast places the first opening around April 3, lantern lighting and food stalls are expected to begin around March 27, allowing visitors to experience the festival mood before the blossoms reach full bloom. The park itself is a historic cherry blossom destination connected to the Date family, with many varieties of sakura providing a long viewing season.

On March 7, Sendai Umino-Mori Aquarium hosts “Deep-Sea Night Aquarium,” an after-hours program designed for a more adult audience. The event centers on a special talk show by biology writer Hiroshi Hirasaka, and includes displays of rare specimens such as the spinyfin and chimaera, along with food tasting using underutilized fish at the Kanezaki booth. Rather than simple nighttime leisure, the event emphasizes a deeper educational experience related to ocean resources, ecology, and sustainability, while giving adults a fun yet intellectually-oriented evening event.

On March 13, a stargazing session using the mobile observatory vehicle “Vega” is held at Sendai Coastal Park Adventure Plaza. Operated by Sendai Astronomical Observatory, Vega plays an important outreach role by bringing telescope-equipped astronomy programming directly to communities throughout the city. The clear atmosphere between winter and spring makes this period particularly suitable for celestial observation, turning the event into both a seasonal activity and a science education opportunity.

Following its February 28 home opener, Vegalta Sendai continues its early 2026 season home schedule with official league matches on March 7 against Shonan Bellmare and March 14 against SC Sagamihara at Yurtec Stadium Sendai. These games mark the true return of football season in the city and reinforce the club’s role as a major pillar of regional identity.

The Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles begin the 2026 Pacific League season with an away opener on March 27, then return to Rakuten Mobile Park Miyagi for their home opener against the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks on March 31. The home opener is one of the clearest signs that spring has arrived in Sendai, with the energy in the stadium often shaping the mood of the city itself.

MIFA Football Park Sendai continues to develop community-based futsal competitions and related programs with Vegalta Sendai throughout March, which are both spectator-oriented and create opportunities for residents to take part in directly. This kind of programming broadens the base of sports participation and helps connect professional club branding to everyday physical activity, a good example of how Sendai’s sports environment extends beyond competition into community engagement.

From late March into early April, top chamber musicians centered on members of the Vienna Philharmonic will perform in Sendai at venues such as Tokyo Electron Hall Miyagi. This project brings world-class music to the region and has become a recurring spring highlight that enriches the city’s cultural capita, broadening the idea of “spectator events” beyond sports alone.

Sendai City Museum presents “Exciting! Winter Is the Time for Museums” from December 23, 2025 to March 22, 2026. Located on the site of the former third bailey of Sendai Castle, the museum invites visitors into hands-on encounters with local history, introducing the history of Miyagi and Sendai from the Paleolithic era to modern times.

From January 24 to March 22, Sendai Museum of Literature hosts a photography exhibition by Kesennuma-born photographer Ryuji Sasaki. His works, which depict post-disaster landscapes, Tohoku nature, and the people who live within it, carry meanings that go beyond aesthetic appreciation alone. These photographs also function as acts of remembrance and regional reflection, keeping memory alive through art.

This exhibition is especially significant this year, as the museum is due to enter a long closure period for large-scale renovation in August 2026, making Spring 2026 one of its last major public-facing phases before that transition.

From March 3 to May 27, Sendai Mediatheque hosts the Sendai In Progress Report Exhibition 2025, a project by internationally known artist Tadashi Kawamata. Using multiple parts of the building, the exhibition treats the city’s landscape and human activity themselves as artistic material. During the early March phase, the exhibition creates opportunities for dialogue between artist and public through reporting and reflection on activity within the city, functioning not only as an art show, but as a platform for imagining Sendai’s urban future through collective conversation.

On March 28, Sendai City Science Museum presents the science show “Let’s Play with Air.” The museum’s 3F permanent exhibition area was renewed in April 2025, and has continued to build educational programming around these updated facilities. By making the power and behavior of air visible through live demonstration, the show introduces children to scientific principles in a direct and intuitive way.

As introduced above, one of the highlights of the Eric Carle collaboration is the Very Hungry Caterpillar Greeting, held at Sendai Umino-Mori Aquarium on April 4 (and again on May 16) (facility admission required). On selected weekends in April, Sendai Umino-Mori Aquarium invites visitors to enjoy watching otter feeding time through their feeding event, “Catch the Petals.” Held at 1 PM on select dates between April 4–26, guests can enjoy watching the aquarium’s adorable otters as they catch and eat special petal-shaped food.

During the spring leisure season, Yagiyama Benyland expands its character-show schedule with programs like “Kamen Rider Zez” in March, and “Detective Precure!” (coming in May). These outdoor stage shows typically hold two performances per day (11 AM and 2 PM), and are included with regular park admission (see website for the latest schedule).

Tsutsujigaoka Park reaches the height of its Sakura Festival in early to mid-April. Around 360 cherry trees of roughly 19 varieties bloom across the grounds, allowing visitors to enjoy a relatively long viewing period because different species open at different times. The program also includes cultural attractions such as Sendai Suzume Odori performances on April 5 and 12, plus Hanami Live music events on April 4-5 and 11-12, with illumination continuing until 9 PM.

From early to late April, Nishi Park hosts Sakuragaoka Hanami along the Hirose River. As Sendai’s oldest park and one of the city’s best-known flower-viewing spots, it is especially popular for group gatherings thanks to its accessibility from Omachi Nishi Koen subway station. Around 200 Somei Yoshino trees line the park, while food stalls and lantern lighting bring the festive spring atmosphere to Sendai.

On April 11, the Natori Spring Festival will be held on the grounds of Natori City Hall. The event announces the arrival of spring through performances like Yurage Taiko drumming and a local products fair. Beyond simple festivity, it also carries the meaning of strengthening local bonds and regional recovery in the post-disaster landscape of the greater Sendai area.

On April 28 and 29, Akiu Otaki Fudoson holds its Grand Festival near Akiu Onsen, one of Sendai’s top hot spring areas. Located beside Akiu Otaki, one of Japan’s Three Great Waterfalls, the temple houses a massive seated Fudo Myoo image, creating a setting filled with the solemn atmosphere of mountain worship and ascetic tradition. Held at the start of Golden Week, the festival works as a tourism driver for the wider Akiu area, attracting overnight guests and day-trip visitors alike.

From April 10 to 12, to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the release of Pokémon Red and Green, Rakuten Mobile Park Miyagi hosts Pokemon Baseball Festa 2026 during the Eagles’ series against Orix. Programs include commemorative photo opportunities with Pikachu in a Rakuten Eagles uniform, stamp rallies featuring Poké Ball-themed designs, and Pokemon GO related events. Of course, there will also be plenty of limited themed merch to buy as a souvenir of your experience, too!

Linked to the baseball collaboration, a special Pokemon GO event is also planned in and around Rakuten Park. By combining digital gameplay with the physical geography of the stadium district, the event encourages visitors to explore not just inside the venue, but around its surrounding areas as well.

On April 25, Vegalta Sendai hosts its biggest rival Montedio Yamagata at Yurtec Stadium Sendai in the Michinoku Derby. This is one of the most emotionally charged fixtures of the season, carrying not only competitive importance but also regional pride between neighboring prefectures. The sale of “Exciting Seats” positioned close to the pitch reflects an effort to turn supporter passion directly into premium experience value. The match is one of April’s most significant sporting events in Sendai and a major focal point for local football culture.

As April unfolds, Sendai 89ERS enter the final, crucial stretch of the B1 League regular season. Home games at Xebio Arena Sendai are known for their strong entertainment value, combining basketball with light, sound, and in-arena presentation that helps sustain reliable attendance regardless of weather. If championship qualification remains in play, these late-season games carry especially high stakes and become key drivers of Sendai’s spring sports excitement. They also demonstrate the important role indoor spectator sports play in the city’s broader cultural calendar.

From April 17 to June 7, Sendai City Museum presents the spring special exhibition, “What If Cats?” Centered on late Edo-period ukiyo-e, the exhibition explores anthropomorphized cat imagery by artists such as Utagawa Kuniyoshi, as well as the broader relationship between cats and people in premodern Japan.

From April 18 to June 21, Tohoku History Museum in Tagajo holds the Sakura Momoko Exhibition. Featuring around 300 items, including original drawings from Chibi Maruko-chan and handwritten manuscript materials from works such as Momo no Kanzume, the exhibition traces the creative path of one of Japan’s most beloved cultural figures. Because Sakura Momoko’s work resonates across generations, the show has strong appeal for family groups spanning children, parents, and grandparents.

From April 25 to June 28, Sendai Museum of Literature presents a special exhibition on the work of internationally known bookbinder Tini Miura. Born in Germany and later living in Miyagi Prefecture, Miura created extraordinary examples of the “beautiful book” that sit at the intersection of literature and craft. In an age increasingly dominated by digital media, the exhibition invites visitors to reconsider the physical book as an object of design, labor, and aesthetic presence. It is an especially fitting program for a literature museum, one that expands literary culture into the realm of material artistry.

From March 20 to June 28, Ishinomori Mangattan Museum in Ishinomaki presents an original art exhibition dedicated to Kobito Zukan. Known for its unusual world-building and distinctive imaginary creatures, the series has long been highly popular with children. The exhibition makes Ishinomaki a great day-trip destination from Sendai, especially for families.

During the latter half of Golden Week, from May 3 to 6, Yagiyama Benyland presents a full run of daily character shows. With roughly 30 attractions ranging from thrill rides to family-friendly options, the park depends heavily on Golden Week as one of its most important annual earning periods, giving families a reason to visit, even during the busy holiday season.

On May 16 and 17, Sendai holds the 42nd Sendai Aoba Festival, with the first day serving as the eve festival and the second as the main festival. Originating in the annual festival of Aoba Shrine dedicated to Date Masamune and revived as a civic festival in 1985, it is now one of Sendai’s defining spring events. On May 16, Sendai Suzume Odori dances fill the city, while on May 17, ornate festival floats parade along Jozenji-dori accompanied by a warrior procession.

From April 25 to May 31, Kanahebisui Shrine in Iwanuma holds its Flower Festival. In May, the shrine’s peonies and wisteria reach their peak, with around 1,300 peony plants competing in bloom. Long known as a sacred site of water deity worship, the shrine has also developed more modern attractions like terraces and café spaces, drawing increasing numbers of visitors with a springtime blend of nature, spirituality, and design.

On May 10, the Sendai International Half Marathon 2026 takes place across major city roads, starting and finishing at Koshin Rubber Athlete Park Sendai. The race brings top runners from Japan and abroad through Sendai’s fresh green avenues, including the celebrated Jozenji-dori boulevard. For citizen runners, it is one of the city’s most aspirational sports events, while for spectators it becomes a large-scale public celebration of endurance and urban vitality. This period also sees a number of regional athletic competitions and citizen sports festivals held at Koshin Rubber Athlete Park.

Vegalta Sendai plays a busy sequence of home games in May at Yurtec Stadium Sendai, including matches against Akita on May 2, Tochigi SC on May 6, and Yokohama FC on May 23. The two Golden Week fixtures are particularly significant, as they are expected to include extra stadium events for children and holiday visitors.

From May 29, Rakuten Mobile Park Miyagi begins its interleague schedule, starting with games against Yakult and continuing into June with high-profile series such as the Giants and Hiroshima. Interleague games are especially popular because they bring in star players and matchups that fans do not usually get to see during the regular Pacific League schedule.

In May, Sendai City Museum’s “What If Cats?” exhibition enters its second half and expands related programming. Curator gallery talks and commemorative lectures on Edo-period culture deepen the exhibition beyond visual appreciation and offer visitors a more layered learning experience. The museum’s decision to open on the May 4 holiday also improves accessibility for travelers during Golden Week.

At Tohoku History Museum, read-aloud events by Sendai Broadcasting announcers are scheduled for May 2, May 9, and June 6 in connection with the Sakura Momoko Exhibition. These programs allow the warmth and emotional texture of Sakura Momoko’s writing to be experienced through voice as well as visual display, enriching the exhibition from a sensory angle.

Continuing from the previous event mentioned in the April section, Ishinomori Mangattan Museum will also hold an exclusive autograph session with Toshitaka Nabata (Kobito Zukan). The entire event kicks off with a talk show held at the nearby venue, Miyagi Cooperative Aitopia Hall, before moving back into the Manga Museum for the signing session.

However, be aware that both the talk show and the signing require previous registration and are limited space (with the signing session determined by lottery, announced May 1st), so be sure to check the application instructions well ahead of time – the deadline is April 19, 2026!

On May 24, Sendai Museum of Literature hosts the Kitane Dialogue session, featuring museum director Kazumugi Saeki in conversation with writer Kumi Kimura. Held in the quiet green setting surrounding the museum, the program offers a reflective space for discussing creativity and literary thought in a public yet intimate format.

Also at the Sendai Literature Museum, May marks the launch of its 2026 Learning Course program for the general public. Although all in Japanese, these courses cover topics such as how to read literature, writing techniques, and regional history, providing instruction from specialists.

Because the museum is approaching a long closure period for renovation, this year’s courses also carry extra significance as one of the last full annual opportunities of their kind before that transition.

At the Site of the Tomizawa Ruins and the Sendai City Tomizawa Site Museum, there will be volunteer training courses starting in May. The museum, which preserves and exhibits a 20,000-year-old archaeological site, relies on trained citizen volunteers to help interpret the ruins and support experiential learning programs. Training local residents in this role does more than assist operations; it creates a bridge between the museum and the wider community by turning citizens into active carriers of historical knowledge.
