Less than an hour from central Sendai, Akiu Onsen swaps city streets for forested gorges, steaming hot springs, waterfalls, local food, wine, craft beer, and traditional crafts. Better yet, you don't need to stay overnight to enjoy it.
Akiu works particularly well as a half-day or full-day trip from Sendai. Spend the morning walking through Rairaikyo Gorge, relax in a day-use onsen, stop for lunch or local sweets, then add a winery, brewery, craft workshop, or the dramatic Akiu Otaki Falls depending on your schedule.
Here's how to plan an Akiu Onsen day trip from Sendai, including what to see, how to get around without a car, and which sights work best together.
What is Akiu Onsen?

Akiu Onsen is a historic hot spring area in the mountains southwest of central Sendai. Its hot-spring history stretches back roughly 1,500 years, and the baths were also associated with Date Masamune, the powerful samurai lord who founded modern Sendai.
Despite technically being part of Sendai City, Akiu feels surprisingly rural. The Natori River runs through the valley, Rairaikyo Gorge cuts directly past the hot-spring district, and mountains rise around the town.
This combination is what makes Akiu particularly appealing for travelers staying in Sendai. You can experience an onsen town and Tohoku's mountain scenery without changing hotels or committing to an overnight trip.
- From Sendai Station: Around 40–50 minutes by bus
- Best for: Hot springs, nature, autumn scenery, local food, wine, craft beer, and crafts
- Recommended time: Half day for central Akiu; full day if visiting Akiu Otaki Falls
- Car required? No for central Akiu; useful but not essential for Akiu Otaki Falls
- Good without a car: Rairaikyo Gorge, day-use onsen, Akiusha, Saichi, Akiu Winery, Great Dane Brewing
- Main visitor hub: Akiu Sato Center
How to get from Sendai Station to Akiu Onsen

There is no railway station in the main Akiu Onsen district, so most visitors arrive by bus or car.
By bus from Sendai Station

Two main bus services connect central Sendai with Akiu.
Takeya Kotsu Sendai Seibu Liner: Buses leave from the Sendai Station area and reach Akiu Onsen in around 40 minutes. The current adult fare between Sendai Station and stops in the Akiu Onsen area is 860 yen one way.
Miyagi Kotsu Akiu Line: This route departs from Sendai Station's West Exit bus terminal and generally takes around 50 minutes to reach the Akiu area. The adult fare between Sendai Station and Akiu Sato Center (central location for accessing the area) is 940 yen. You can use Suica and Pasmo to board and pay.
Because schedules can change seasonally, check the latest timetable before traveling, especially if you're planning to connect onward to Akiu Otaki Falls.

By car
Driving from central Sendai to Akiu Onsen takes approximately 30 minutes under normal traffic conditions.
A car gives you considerably more freedom if you want to combine the hot-spring district with Akiu Otaki Falls, the traditional craft village, or other attractions spread through the valley. However, you can still enjoy the main Akiu Onsen area comfortably without one.
Getting around Akiu without a car
Central Akiu is surprisingly walkable. Rairaikyo Gorge, several hotels offering day-use bathing, restaurants, and other attractions are clustered around the Yumoto district.
Akiu Sato Center is a useful first stop for maps and local information. Free rental bicycles are also available, with a refundable 1,000 yen deposit, making it easier to reach attractions slightly farther from the main hot-spring area.
Tip: Don't try to cram every Akiu attraction into one day using buses. Central Akiu works very well on foot, while Akiu Otaki Falls is better treated as the major second half of your itinerary.
Suggested Akiu Onsen 1-day itinerary from Sendai
For a first visit without a car, we'd structure the day roughly like this:
・Morning: Bus from Sendai to Akiu Onsen
・Morning: Walk Rairaikyo Gorge
・Late morning: Day-use onsen at Hotel Zuiho or another ryokan
・Lunch: Akiusha or another restaurant in the Yumoto area
・Early afternoon: Saichi, Akiu Winery, Great Dane Brewing, or Akiu Traditional Craft Village
・Afternoon: Continue to Akiu Otaki Falls if bus schedules allow
・Evening: Return to Sendai for dinner
If you're mainly interested in relaxing, skip the waterfall and spend more time around the hot-spring district. If nature is your priority, give Akiu Otaki a few hours rather than rushing there and back.
1. Walk through dramatic Rairaikyo Gorge

We started our day in Akiu with one of the area's easiest scenic walks, Rairaikyo Gorge. From the central hot-spring district, it's only a short walk from Akiu Sato Center, making it a natural first stop before heading deeper into the area.
The gorge follows the Natori River for around 1 kilometer, with a walking path running close to the water. As you make your way along the trail, you'll pass dramatic rock formations, clear pools, and sections where the river squeezes between steep stone walls. It's an easy place to slow down and get your first taste of Akiu's mountain scenery.

The thing you’ll want to check out at Rairaikyō Gorge is the heart-shaped depression in the rocks, the Nozokibashi Heart. Take a peek under the Nozokibashi Bridge, which crosses the Natori River. You can see the heart-shaped depression in the rocks! It’s so clearly formed you wouldn’t think that it was made naturally, and you’ll find yourself snapping pictures before you know it
The Nozokibashi Heart was confirmed by the fashion designer Katsura Yumi, who was leading the “Lover’s Sanctuary” project. Looking at the heart while making a wish for brilliant love, it’s a place where couples and spouses can reaffirm their love for each other.

2. Soak in an onsen surrounded by Japanese gardens at Hotel Zuiho

After walking through the gorge, we headed about 15 minutes on foot to Hotel Zuiho for one of the main reasons to visit Akiu in the first place: a proper hot-spring soak.
You don't need to stay overnight here to enjoy the baths. Hotel Zuiho offers day-use bathing, making it easy to work an onsen experience into a day trip from Sendai.
Inside, the bathing area is surprisingly spacious. There are indoor baths, open-air baths surrounded by carefully maintained Japanese gardens, a sauna, and several different bathing styles.

One of the most memorable is the deep standing bath, where the water reaches around 130 centimeters. There's also an open-air bath where you can soak while looking out toward a small waterfall, which feels especially relaxing after walking around the gorge.
For a simple visit, the standard bathing course is the easiest option. Towels cost extra, so either bring your own or rent or buy them at the hotel.
We'd recommend doing this earlier in the day rather than saving it until evening, since day-use bathing ends in the afternoon.

3. Have lunch in a 160-year-old house at Akiusha

By this point, we were ready for lunch. Fortunately, Akiusha is only about a five-minute walk from Hotel Zuiho.
The restaurant itself is part of the experience. It occupies a renovated traditional Japanese house said to be around 160 years old, with old wooden beams and pillars still visible throughout the interior.
The menu focuses heavily on vegetables and other ingredients from the local area. One of the signature dishes is the Akiusha Lunch, a colorful plate built around seasonal produce.

Because the vegetables change depending on what's available, the meal doesn't always look exactly the same. That's part of the fun. Roasted, steamed, or prepared in different ways, even simple ingredients like carrots and sweet potatoes can be surprisingly rich and sweet.
There are also more playful dishes on the menu, including a taco-rice-style bowl designed to look a little like a vegetable field. It's the kind of lunch stop that fits Akiu well: relaxed, local, and full of character without feeling overly formal.

4. Pick up Akiu's famous ohagi at Saichi
After lunch, there's one more food stop that's hard to ignore.
At first glance, Shufu no Mise Saichi looks like an ordinary local supermarket. But step inside and you'll quickly notice people heading for one particular section: the trays of handmade ohagi.
Ohagi is a traditional Japanese sweet made from sticky rice covered in sweet red bean paste. Saichi's version has become so famous that people travel to Akiu specifically to buy it.
The appeal is in how simple it is. The rice has a pleasantly chewy texture, while the red bean paste is rich and generous without being overwhelmingly sweet.
We'd pick up a pack here rather than trying to eat everything immediately. They make an easy snack for later in the day, especially if you're continuing on to the waterfall.
If Saichi is high on your list, don't leave it too late. Popular varieties can sell out.
5. Taste local wine at Akiu Winery

Next, we turned from sweets to something a little more grown-up.
Akiu Winery sits amid the countryside and adds a completely different side to the hot-spring town. The winery produces its own wines and cider, and visitors can stop by the shop, have a meal, or sample what's currently being poured.
What makes it especially enjoyable is the setting. After a morning of walking and soaking in an onsen, sitting down with a glass of locally made wine while looking out over Akiu's greenery gives the day a completely different pace.
The winery is also part of a wider effort to connect Akiu's hot-spring culture with local food and drink, so it feels less like an isolated attraction and more like part of the area itself.
Even if you don't have time for a full tasting, it's worth browsing the shop for bottles to take home.
And of course, if you're driving, leave the tasting to someone else.

6. Try Akiu-brewed craft beer at Great Dane Brewing

If wine isn't quite your thing, Akiu now has another reason to raise a glass.
Great Dane Brewing opened its Akiu brewery in 2024, bringing a little bit of Wisconsin to Miyagi. The brewery traces its roots back to the United States, and its slogan, "Wisconsin Born, Sendai Brewed," tells you pretty much what to expect.
Inside, the atmosphere is more modern and casual than the traditional restaurants and ryokan elsewhere in Akiu. You can sit down with a freshly brewed beer while looking into the brewery itself, and the food combines American-style dishes with ingredients from Miyagi and the wider Tohoku region.
Depending on the day, there may be up to 16 beers on offer, ranging from IPAs and lagers to Scotch ales. One we especially like for the setting is the Akiu Pilsner.
It makes a fun stop later in the afternoon, particularly if you've already spent the day walking, bathing, and exploring.
There's also a shop selling canned beer and original goods, so you don't necessarily have to sit down for a full meal.
If you're interested in local drinks, pairing Great Dane with Akiu Winery gives you two very different sides of Akiu's growing food-and-drink scene.

7. Meet local artisans at Akiu Traditional Craft Village
After all that food and drink, we wanted to see another side of Akiu.
Akiu Traditional Craft Village brings together working studios where local artisans make traditional Miyagi crafts. Rather than feeling like a museum, it's a place where you can actually see crafts being made and, depending on the studio, try making something yourself.
You may come across kokeshi dolls, woodwork, textiles, and other traditional pieces. Some workshops offer hands-on experiences such as painting a kokeshi doll or making chopsticks.
That makes this an especially good stop if you're traveling with children, visiting on a rainy day, or simply want something more interactive than sightseeing.
It's also a nice reminder that Akiu isn't only about nature and hot springs. The area has a strong craft tradition that still feels very much alive.
Because each workshop operates independently, opening days and reservation requirements can vary, so it's worth checking before you go.

8. Feel the power of Akiu Great Falls

For our final major stop, we headed deeper into the valley to one of Akiu's most famous sights: Akiu Great Falls.
The waterfall drops around 55 meters and is about 6 meters wide, surrounded almost entirely by forest. Even from the upper viewing area, it's impressive. But if you have the time and energy, the real experience is heading down toward the basin.

There are a couple of ways to approach the falls. One route leads from the main rest area and observation point, while another starts closer to the basin near Fudotakibashi Bridge.
The walk down isn't especially long, but parts of the trail are steep and rocky, so this is one place where proper walking shoes make a real difference.
As we descended, the air gradually became cooler and damper. Then, almost suddenly, the waterfall appeared directly ahead.

Up close, the sound is what strikes you first. The roar fills the basin, spray hangs in the air, and the waterfall feels much larger than it does from above.
On clear days, you may even catch a rainbow in the mist.
It's easy to linger here longer than planned.
Can you reach Akiu Great Falls without a car?
Yes, although this is where a little planning helps.
Buses do serve the waterfall area, including weekend and holiday services connecting central Akiu and Akiu Great Falls. Additional services are operating during the current 2026–2027 period, making the trip easier than it used to be.
That said, buses aren't especially frequent, so check the timetable before setting out.
If you're driving or using a taxi, fitting the falls into your day is considerably easier.

Bonus: Slow down at Tenshukaku Nature Park
If you don't want to travel all the way out to Akiu Great Falls, Tenshukaku Nature Park makes a much more relaxed alternative.
The garden is built around ponds, stone arrangements, flowing water, and the surrounding greenery. Walking through it feels deliberately slow-paced, with koi swimming below and the sound of birds and water in the background.

Each season gives the garden a different character. Cherry blossoms appear in spring, hydrangeas in early summer, and the park's maple trees turn vivid shades of red and orange in autumn.
Winter brings a quieter atmosphere, when snow settles over the garden.
There are also hot-spring facilities and a footbath, so it's easy to spend some time here without rushing from one attraction to the next.
For travelers who mainly want to relax in Akiu rather than pack in as many sights as possible, this may actually be the better choice.

By the end of the day, Akiu had given us a little bit of everything: a riverside gorge, a long soak in an onsen, local food, wine, craft beer, traditional crafts, and one very impressive waterfall.
What makes Akiu especially appealing is how easy it is to add to a stay in Sendai. You can keep things simple with a relaxed half-day around the central hot-spring district, or turn it into a full-day outing by continuing on to Akiu Great Falls.
