Description
Hieizan Enryakuji is a temple that has its buildings scattered all across the 848-meter-high Mt. Hiei, and sits on the borders of Shiga and Kyoto. First built in the early Heian period by Dengyo Daishi Saicho, it is now the head temple of the Tendai Buddhist sect and known as one of the most significant monasteries of Japanese Buddhism. There are three areas on the mountain known as To-do, Sai-to, and Yokawa, where several hundred temples and monasteries stand.
