The "Gozan Okuribi" or "Daimonji Bonfires" are traditional events held on August 16th every year on various mountains across Kyoto. These bonfires have become an iconic symbol of Kyoto's summer. Among them are the "Daimonji Okuribi" in Nishigahara, Sakyo Ward, the "Matsugasaki Myohoson Okuribi" in Matsugasaki, Sakyo Ward, and the "Funagata Mantoro Okuribi" on Myokenzan in Nishigamo, Kita Ward, which all illuminate the night sky during the summer evenings.

Each mountain area features characters like "大" (meaning "big") or torii gates that are drawn with fire, creating a solemn and majestic sight. The fires are believed to guide the spirits of ancestors back to the realm of the living and then send them off to the afterlife.
