Ohatsu Tenjin Shrine

お初天神

Description

The formal name of Ohatsu Tenjin is “Tsuyu no Tenjinja” and it comes from a classic Japanese poem that Michizane Sugawara wrote when he was demoted and sent to Tsukushi. The temple was the setting for a massively popular puppet play titled “Sonezaki Shinju” (Double Suicide) during the Edo period, and ever since then, the shrine has been referred to as “Ohatsu Tenjin”, taken from the main character’s name.
