Shinsekai, Tennouji, Tsuruhashi:Overview & History
Tenno-ji Temple was named after Shitenno-ji Temple built by Prince Shotoku in 593. It developed as a temple-side town, right in front of the gates to Shitenno-ji Temple. It has now become a business and shopping area in southern Osaka, following the opening of JR Tenno-ji Station in 1889. Shinsekai is within walking distance of Tenno-ji. Its retro atmosphere is reminiscent of Showa period, and the rich ambience of this downtown district in Osaka is well-received by tourists. Tsuruhashi and Ikuno are close to Tenno-ji, and are known Osaka's Korean district. This district bustles with yakiniku (grilled meat) restaurants, Korean restaurants, and stores with Korean cosmetics.

Situated at the south of Osaka, this area features an eclectic mix, featuring a modern business district including the Abeno Harukas building, juxtaposed with the rich atmosphere unique to Osaka's downtown districts. Enjoy shopping in some of the area's department stores and shopping malls.
Shinsekai Surrounding Areas
The Shinsekai area is home to Tsutenkaku, one of the symbols of Osaka. Enjoy dishes from downtown Osaka, such as kushikatsu (deep-fried skewers) or doteyaki (beef sinews stewed in miso and mirin), and experience home-grown Osaka entertainment including manzai (comedy duo performances) and Kamigata Rakugo (comic storytelling). Tennoji Zoo and Osaka City Museum of Fine Arts are also a stone's throw away.
Tennouji Surrounding Areas
There are many terminal stations in the south of Osaka, including the JR Kansai Main Line, the Osaka Loop Line, and the Hanwa Line, as well as the Osaka Metro Midosuji Line and the Tanimachi Line. These stations are all near to Kintetsu Abenobashi Station, making it easy to transfer to the Kintetsu Line. There are many commercial facilities nearby, including Abeno Harukas, Japan's tallest building that opened in 2014.
Tsuruhashi Surrounding Areas
The Tsuruhashi and Ikuno areas are known as Osaka's Korean districts. Tsuruhashi can be accessed via the JR Loop Line and the Osaka Metro Sennichimae Line, and Ikuno is within walking distance of Tsuruhashi. There are many restaurants near Tsuruhashi serving yakiniku (grilled meat) and Korean cuisine. The smell of yakiniku is sure to whet your appetite.

The 21st and 22nd of every month: Shitenno-ji Temple Daishikai/Taishikai
The 21st of each month commemorates the death of the famous monk Kukai (Kobo Daishi), and the 22nd of each month commemorates Prince Shotoku. On these dates, the temple opens its central hall as well as the cloister at the top floor of its five-story pagoda for public visitors. The temple grounds feature many stalls selling antiques, food, and general goods.

Access from Kansai International Airport to Tennouji
From Kansai Airport Station, take the JR Kansai Airport Line Limited Express Haruka No. 22 bound for Kyoto, ride for 34 minutes, and then get off at Tenno-ji Station.
Access from Osaka International Airport to Tennouji
From Osaka Airport Station, take the Osaka Monorail bound for Kadoma-shi, ride for three minutes, then get off at Hotarugaike Station. Transfer to the Hankyu Takarazuka Line Express bound for Umeda, ride for 15 minutes, and get off at Umeda Station. Take the Osaka Metro Midosuji Line bound for Tenno-ji, ride for 16 minutes, and then get off at Tenno-ji Station.
Access from Kyoto Station to Tennouji
From Kyoto Station, take the JR Tokaido Main Line Limited Express Haruka No. 25 bound for Kansai Airport, ride for 45 minutes, and then get off at Tenno-ji Station.
