Every winter, deep in the heart of Hokkaido, an entire village made of ice appears for a few precious hours each evening. From December 10 to March 14, Hoshino Resorts Tomamu once again brings back its beloved Ice Village, complete with glowing domes, icy dining, and its famous Ice Church, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this season. Hoshino Resort Tomamu is a large-scale resort located in the Yufutsu District of Shimukappu Village, about 1 hour 40 minutes by car from the Shin-Chitose Airport with an area of about 1,000 hectares. When visiting in winter, one can expect plenty of powdered snow to ski on! However, that's not all this resort has to offer!

The temperature at Hoshino Resorts Tomamu can drop to as low as 30ºC below zero in the winter. But since 1998, locals have taken advantage of the cold to make chilly nights more enjoyable with their very own Tomamu Ice Village.

Spanning 3.2 hectares, the village appears only after dark, when temperatures drop low enough for thick, crystal-clear ice to form. Eleven domes made entirely of snow and ice line the paths, housing an Ice Bar, Ice Restaurant, Ice Hotel, and other winter-only experiences. At the furthest point sit its two most iconic structures, the Ice Church and Ice Hotel, both crafted from a single seamless sheet of frozen water.

The Ice Church Turns 20 with a New Design

The Ice Church Turns 20 with a New Design

Since its debut in 2005, more than 660 couples have exchanged vows inside the Ice Church. Everything from the altar and cross to the pews is carved from pure ice. When light reflects off the transparent walls, the interior glows with a soft blue shimmer known locally as ice blue.
For its 20th anniversary, the chapel features a new circular design that lets guests stand around the couple for a 360-degree ceremony. Even those not attending a wedding can join short viewing sessions in the evening.

・Period: January 20 – February 14
・Viewing times: 5:45 PM, 7:45 PM, 9:45 PM (about 10 minutes each)
