Overflowing Salmon Roe Rice Bowls: Tokyo's Best 4 Places to Eat Kobore Ikura Don!

Last updated: 19 June 2020

Eating a rice bowl overflowing with salmon roe is an exciting (and potentially strange) way to experience good Japanese cuisine, especially if you’re new to raw foods. These rice bowls, called donburi, are piled high with massive amounts of ikura (salmon roe) and have such a strong visual impact that they’ve been featured on the front covers of magazines! Here we will introduce four places in Tokyo where you can experience eating some really tasty salmon roe rice bowls known locally as kobore ikura don.

The Harshest Foodies Agree on the Superiority of Hokkaido’s Salmon Roe Donburi

To get a taste of the best sushi in Tokyo, first we will look at a place located by the East Entrance of Ikebukuro Station, called “Noka to Ryoshi no Daidokoro Hokkaido Shiretoko Fishing Grounds.” The name may be long but their kobore ikura donburi is top notch. Their motto is that "the entire store is Hokkaido,” and the shop serves many types of high quality seafood straight from the Shiretoko Peninsula. Their "Noresore! Nanmara Kobore Ikura Don" is a dish overflowing with exceptionally fresh and large sized salmon roe.

Once you've experienced and enjoyed the authentic taste of kobore ikura don for amazingly low prices, this Tokyo sushi restaurant meets even the harshest foodie's expectations, overflowing with taste much like the salmon roe in these bowls. In addition, raw oysters from Akkeshi in Hokkaido are delivered directly by the fishermen who caught them. They can be purchased for just 100 yen a piece, any day of the year! This is an extraordinary price even in Hokkaido.

The second Tokyo sushi restaurant, Totoshigure, is located along the street Meiji Dori. You will notice immediately when you look at the menu that their kobore ikura-don, called “Ootsubu Ikura no Kobore Meshi,” clearly has much more salmon roe than rice! It's not only about the quantity, however. They are also very particular about the quality of the salmon roe, their main ingredient, which is hand selected by the head chef himself, an expert in traditional Japanese cuisine. They purchase their ikura through their own route, so you'll be left wondering how they are able to offer such a delectable dish like salmon roe bowl at such a reasonable price. Enjoy their salmon roe bowl, available both during lunch and dinner.

We also recommend Totoshigure's fatty tuna and pickled daikon radish topped with sea urchin. Try combining it with the overflowing big salmon roe meal to experience the best sushi in Tokyo!

The third Tokyo sushi restaurant is Iroriya, located in Higashi-Ginza. Iroriya's “Senjo Meal” was a hot topic at one time when their kobore ikura-don made it onto the cover of a Japanese food magazine.

Iroriya is best known for their plentiful and overflowing servings of fresh salmon roe, a local product of Shiretoko in Hokkaido, freshly delivered directly by the fishermen, while chanting "Yoisho! Yoisho!" (Heave-ho!). Their lively performance in the party rooms excites both the staff and customers every time! Just like the salmon roe on their kobore ikura don, the restaurant’s atmosphere is overflowing with smiles during this wonderful feast.

The Comfort and Satisfaction of En’s Ikura Donburi

The last Tokyo sushi restaurant is called En, which is a short 1-minute walk from Funabori Station on the Toei Shinjuku Line. The salmon roe they use for their kobore ikura don are taken from Hokkaido salmon, carefully selected by the shop manager. Born in Hakodate, the manager himself serves and prepares the salmon roe until it spills over the edge of the bowl right in front of the customer.

The manager has a passion and eagerness to get people to experience and enjoy Hokkaido's taste. As generous and eager as he is with his portions, you wonder how he makes any money at all. The shop's charming retro atmosphere allows single customers to feel comfortable and relaxed. Enjoy a hearty delicious meal in a relaxing atmosphere enjoying some of the best sushi in Tokyo, and both your stomach and heart will thank you for it.
