Lake Towada Festival Returns for Its 61st Year - Fireworks, Water, and Sound in Japan's North
- Written by: LIVE JAPAN Editor
Set against the calm, mirror-like waters of Lake Towada, one of northern Japan’s most scenic destinations, this long-running summer festival is making a meaningful return in 2026. This year’s edition of the Lake Towada Kosui Matsuri is especially significant, marking 90 years since the area was designated a national park—and it will all unfold in a single, carefully curated day.
Celebrating 90 Years of Natural Beauty

Lake Towada sits at the heart of Towada-Hachimantai National Park, a vast protected area known for its volcanic landscapes, dense forests, and dramatic gorges like the nearby Oirase Stream. The lake itself is a rare double caldera, prized for its stillness and striking blue waters.
For nearly a century, visitors have come here to unwind—whether cruising across the lake, soaking in nearby hot springs, or simply taking in the quiet beauty. This festival serves as both a celebration and a reminder of the region’s enduring appeal.
What to Expect: A Lakeside Evening of Light, Water, and Sound

As evening falls, the lakeside transforms into a dreamlike scene. Balloon lanterns carrying handwritten wishes float gently into the sky, while “message fireworks” add bursts of light and sound, creating a deeply atmospheric experience unique to Lake Towada.
Visitors can also take part in night cruises, offering a rare vantage point from the water as lanterns drift and fireworks reflect across the lake’s surface. On land, local volunteers bring the festival to life with live music, dance performances, and traditional entertainment.
The grand finale is a coordinated display of ground-effect fireworks set to music, filling the lakeside with light, rhythm, and echoes that ripple across the surrounding mountains.
More details, including ticketed experiences and special activities, will be released from April onward.
