Date published: 9 May 2025

Mount Fuji, the symbol of Japan, stands as the country's tallest mountain. However, there aren't many places where you can easily enjoy a view of it. Among those few, one of the most popular destinations is Hakone, located by the shores of Lake Ashi. It's just a short trip from the city center and offers stunning views of Mount Fuji, as well as natural beauty, history, hot springs, and various leisure activities.

As a scenery enthusiast who has traveled to 89 countries and all across Japan, I confidently recommend one of the best spots to enjoy these breathtaking views: the renowned Odakyu Hotel de Yama in Hakone.

A Prestigious Hotel by Lake Ashi: Hotel de Yama

A Prestigious Hotel by Lake Ashi: Hotel de Yama

Located by Lake Ashi, Odakyu Hotel de Yama is a historic hotel that once served as the private residence and garden of Baron Koyata Iwasaki, the fourth head of the Mitsubishi Group, one of Japan's three major business conglomerates.

Since its opening in 1948, the hotel has been cherished by top business executives, politicians, and celebrities, earning a reputation as a luxurious retreat.

Although the hotel has been rebuilt and is now in its third generation, the expansive garden, featuring azaleas and rhododendrons that date back to the baron's era, has become a symbol of Hotel de Yama's legacy spanning more than 100 years.

When you think of Hotel de Yama, it's the picturesque view from the garden that comes to mind. Every year, beginning in early May, the vibrant colors of the azaleas in full bloom, combined with the majestic view of Mount Fuji, create a scene that looks like a painting.

The azaleas, descended from those of Barons Iwasaki's era, represent 84 varieties and about 3,000 plants, while the rhododendrons include 42 varieties and around 300 plants. The hotel's dedicated groundskeepers takes great care in maintaining this beautiful garden.

The town of Motohakone, just a short distance from Hotel de Yama, is a popular viewpoint where you can enjoy the sight of the iconic red torii gate on the shores of Lake Ashi, along with the famous 'reverse Mount Fuji' reflection.

Hakone Shrine is next to the hotel, and if you take a short walk, you'll find historic sites like the Old Hakone Road cobblestone path, the ancient cedar tree-lined avenue, the reconstructed Hakone Sekisho (checkpoint from the Edo period), royal family-related parks, and the Hakone pirate ship dock, making it a perfect base for exploring Hakone.

Create Your Own Custom Coaster with Hakone's Traditional Yosegi-zaiku Woodwork

Create Your Own Custom Coaster with Hakone's Traditional Yosegi-zaiku Woodwork

Our first stop was 'Kanazashi Woodcraft' in Hatajuku, the birthplace of Hakone's famous Yosegi-zaiku (wood mosaic) craftsmanship. This traditional craft of Hakone uses the natural colors and grain of wood to create intricate geometric patterns. Kanazashi Woodcraft uses the 'muku' technique, which involves working with thick, solid wood blocks, to create unique pieces. One of the most popular activities, especially among international visitors, is making your own custom Yosegi wood coaster.

Our next stop is the Hakone Amazake Chaya, a traditional sweet shop that has been serving visitors since the Edo period. With its charming thatched-roof house and irori (a traditional hearth used for burning wood or charcoal), this spot is particularly popular among international visitors. A must-try is their 'amazake,' a sweet, fermented rice drink known for its high nutritional value, often referred to as 'liquid medicine' or 'liquid beauty treatment.' When we visited, we enjoyed it along with a popular treat, 'chikara mochi,' while soaking in the peaceful, traditional atmosphere.

From the Amazake Teahouse to Motohakone, we recommend walking along the 'Old Cobblestone Path.' This historic route is a remnant of the old Tokaidōo which once connected Tokyo's Nihonbashi with Kyoto. Take a 30-minute stroll and imagine yourself on a journey in the Edo period as you walk this scenic path.

Pray for Good Fortune at Hakone Shrine

Our next stop was Hakone Shrine, one of the most famous spiritual sites in Hakone. With a history spanning over 1,200 years, the shrine is dedicated to deities believed to bring good fortune. Many travelers stop here to pray for safe travels and good luck on their journey and to pick up a souvenir amulet or talisman for a lasting memory of their visit.
