Osaka capsule hotels: What exactly are they?
Osaka's capsule hotels are a must-try experience. Originating in the city, they offer unique and budget-friendly lodging options. These hotels feature small capsules designed for one person, with communal bathrooms and large baths. Initially inspired by spaceship sleeping quarters, they provide comfort and amenities in a compact space.
While originally catering to men, capsule hotels now welcome all travelers, often with separate floors for men and women.
Here are our top recommended Osaka capsule hotels. Enjoy a convenient and affordable stay without hesitation!
J-SHIP Osaka Namba: Modern Japanese Space
J-SHIP Osaka Namba is especially recommended for those looking for a more traditionally Japanese atmosphere. The front desk is chic and relaxed with a modern Japanese atmosphere, which will add to the pleasure of your stay in Japan. This Osaka capsule hotel is only about a 1-minute walk from the south exit of JR Namba Station, which is also close to where express buses arrive and depart.
There are two types of spaces: the Moderate Cabin, similar to those in capsule hotels, and the Deluxe Cabin, which has a more spacious interior and equipped with a single bed and table. Prices are very reasonable, beginning at 4,740 yen per night.
There is also a large communal bath just perfect for a relaxing soak in the tub. There are also individual shower booths. These are well-equipped with amenities which include bath towel, face towel, a garment for wear in the hotel, toothbrush, shampoo and rinse, body soap, facial cleanser, lotion, milky lotion, shaving cream, razor, cotton swabs, dryer, and a hair iron (for women). Your stay at this comfortable Osaka capsule hotel is sure to be a restful and peaceful one.

First Cabin Midosuji Namba: Get Ready to Land!
First Cabin Midosuji Namba is located very ideally for Namba Station and offers a modern, and more spacious, form of capsule hotel. The theme of this hotel is airplanes, so rather than having a capsule guests can stay in “cabins.” It is directly connected to Namba Station which allows guests to easily get around in Osaka, and in addition it is just a short walk away from the Dotonbori area and Osaka Castle can be reached in just 15 minutes.
This capsule hotel caters to the full spectrum of travelers, they have 1 person cabins which are for men or women only, beautiful Quadruple Rooms with two single beds and two futon beds, and Standard Family Rooms with a jaw-dropping six beds (three single beds and three futon beds) in one spacious room. As such it is the perfect accommodation for everyone, whether they are alone, in a group or traveling as a family. Prices are steeper though than other capsule hotels with cabin rooms starting from 7,500 yen per night.
First Cabin Midosuji Namba is directly connected to Namba Subway Station at Exit 13. Free WiFi is available throughout the property and there is a modern lounge with a comic book corner. Toilets and bathrooms are shared, but this hotel also has a public bath and sauna. It is particularly noteworthy that reviewers on Booking.com discovered that unlike most public baths in Japan, this one doesn’t ban people with body modifications.

First Cabin Nishi Umeda: Enjoy a “Flight” Cabin
Located a short walk from Osaka Station, and fairly close to Fukushima Station, First Cabin Nishi Umeda is a very modern “cabin” type capsule hotel. With easy access to Kansai Airport and all of Osaka, an interesting feature of this hotel is that breakfast is served at a Hawaiian café that is attached to the hotel. So you can experience staying in a small cabin, and in the morning you can pretend that you have made a short trip to Hawaii for breakfast!
The Business Class Cabins include a single bed in a small cabin. One aspect about these beds, which might be apparent from the photo, is that reviewers really love the comfy mattresses!
The First Class Cabin is more spacious and has a single bed and a table. This cabin not only gives you a bit more space and room to stand, but also there is under-bed storage.
The hotel has a shared lounge and a bar. Reception is open 24 hours a day. Toiletries such as pajamas and towels are available, and there is also a large shared bath, shower facilities and a washing machine. People who have stayed at this capsule hotel have raved about the comfortable beds, friendly staff and the breakfast. However, some guests have noted that the cabin doors do not close fully (for safety reasons).

HOTEL Cargo Shinsaibashi: A Very Traditional “Capsule”!
If you are looking for a capsule hotel with a strong Japanese vibe, look no further! HOTEL Cargo Shinsaibashi has premium capsule rooms with traditional Japanese futons with an interior that is clearly influenced by Japanese themes. There is no better place to begin your stay in Japan than in a hotel that mixes the modern sensation of capsules with traditional Japanese décor. The hotel is a 6-minute walk from Exit 1 of Shinsaibashi Station on the Osaka Municipal Subway Midosuji Line and it is within walking distance of four other stations.
Their spacious capsule rooms feature a futon, television and some space for sitting as well as a small desk space. Floors are divided into male only and female only.
There is both an internal public bath and an open-air bath, and all bath amenities are provided for free. In addition, a high-tech shower room can be found on all floors. While guests praised the hotel facilities and how clean everything is, it should be noted that there is no controllable air-conditioning in the capsule rooms and guests have to ask for fans at reception if they are feeling warm. In addition, as the bed is a traditional futon it can feel very thin to people who haven’t slept on one before.

NINJA & GEISHA: Modern yet Traditional Japanese Space
Transport yourself back in time to an age of ninjas and geishas at the NINJA & GEISHA Capsule Hotel. This hotel features décor that will put you in mind of 16th century Japan, you will almost expect to bump into a geisha!
Many capsules have been decorated using a variety of themes, like Hokusai’s Great Wave off Kanagawa, or have stylized representations of Mt. Fuji. The beds are futons, which can feel rather thin to people who haven’t slept on them before, but don’t worry the toilets are very much of the 21st century!
The capsules are small with just enough space for the included futon, a small shelf and a socket. There is no television, but each capsule does have air conditioning.
The hotel is a 1-minute walk from Hankyu Awaji Station and a 2-minute walk from JR Awaji Station. Prices start at 3,600 yen. There is a shared lounge and each floor has shower and toilet facilities.
While some items are included in your stay for free, such as towels, pajamas, shampoo, conditioner and body soap, other items such as razors, hair brushes, cotton swabs and toothbrushes have to be bought at reception.

Capsule&Spa Grand Sauna Shinsaibashi: Stay close to the Dotobori area!
Capsule&Spa Grand Sauna Shinsaibashi is perfect for a more normal capsule hotel experience as it features just capsules! The hotel has small capsules for men that have the main attraction of being comfortable beds in a small space. For women there are only deluxe capsule rooms which include a desk and much more space and privacy. The hotel is located a 5-minute walk from Namba Station and a 7-minute walk from Shinsaibashi Station on the Midosuji Line.
Male Capsule Rooms start from 3,000 yen and include a capsule space with a bed, a TV and air-conditioning.
There are deluxe capsule rooms for men and women, these start from 4,000 yen and 3,300 yen respectively and include a much bigger space with a desk and storage.
For female guests, there are shared shower rooms and a female-only lounge on the ground floor. On the upper floors, male guests will find a wide range of shared bath and sauna facilities, lounges with Japanese comics, a lounge room with classic video game consoles, coin-operated laundry machines and designated smoking rooms.
A big bugbear among guests is that even if you book for consecutive nights, you have to check out every day at 10 AM and check in again at 3 PM – during these five hours, you can’t use any of the hotel facilities.

Capsule Hotel J Garden Shin-Osaka: Open since 2019!
J Garden has been designed with space and comfort foremost in mind, and it features both style and elegance. Their capsule hotel is suitable for solo travelers, groups and couples, regardless of your size! Even people over 6ft tall have commented that the bed and capsule was big enough for them. Other reviewers have praised the modernity and location of this hotel, with the nearest station being a 1-minute walk from Higashi Mikuni Station on the Osaka Metro Midosuji Line.
There are two types of capsules, ones for men and ones for women. Both feature the same kinds of capsules and facilities, it is just that they are on different floors according to gender.
There is also a large modern communal bath on the first floor with all the facilities needed to enjoy a soak in the water – perfect for having an onsen-like experience. In addition, there is a recreation room on the first floor which is perfect for work or relaxing.
However, it should be noted that many guests felt that when the hotel is full there is a queue for the shower facilities on the women’s floor.

Nine Hours Namba Station: Simple & Comfortable Osaka Capsule Hotel
(*Ed. Note: As of July 2023, 9h nine hours Namba Station is marked as temporarily closed, with no reopening scheduled.)
Nine Hours is a capsule hotel chain with facilities not only in Osaka but also Tokyo, Nagoya, and Fukuoka. Based on the concept of “9 hours in total,” one hour to bathe, seven hours to sleep, and one hour to get dressed/undressed, various ideas have been applied to maximize comfort in a minimum period of time.
What makes Nine Hours Namba Station especially attractive is its location in the Namba Parks commercial complex adjacent to Namba Station. This makes it especially convenient for those arriving at Kansai International Airport and taking the Nankai Line Airport Express directly to Namba Station without having to change trains.
At this Osaka capsule hotel, the lockers and washroom areas are very spacious, and there are plenty of very clean shower booths and private toilets. Amenities include bath towels, face towels, garments, and toothbrushes. Hairdryers are located in the washstands area while there are conditioners and body soaps in the shower booths.
Inside the capsules are outlets and lighting fixtures, making them indeed compact and comfortable. These capsules are cocoons of comfort waiting to ease the fatigue of travel and provide a peaceful rest.

Stay at a capsule hotel in Osaka, where they first originated!
In this article, we focused on the Minami area of Osaka, where tourist spots are concentrated, but there are also Nine Hours capsule hotels in Shin-Osaka; Umeda also has a capsule hotel exclusively for men, and there are also capsule hotels outside the Minami area where you can stay.
Although they are compact, they are at the same time very comfortable and usually provide all sorts of amenities and garments you can wear in the hotels. But what really sets them apart from regular hotels is their very low prices.
If you’ve yet to stay at one, why not try spending a night at one of those mentioned in this article?
