What Kind of Place is Kiddy Land Kyoto Shijo Kawaramachi?
Kiddy Land Kyoto Shijo Kawaramachi is only a 2-minute walk from Kyoto Kawaramachi Station on the Hankyu Kyoto Line. This three-story shop is the second largest in Kansai, and always has at least 15,000 character goods on display. The first floor is where you will find Kyoto souvenirs and various character goods.
Payments are accepted via credit card and UnionPay. Each floor is also equipped with a translator called PokeTalk. In the Kyoto Souvenir Corner, there are POP items displayed in English and Chinese. So no need to worry about the language barrier!
The second and third floors have specialty shops for specific characters. Many of these shops are limited to Kyoto, including the ONE PIECE Tawara Store MINI, Rilakkuma Store & Sumikko Gurashi Shop, miffy style, Koupen-chan no Omiseseyasan. Check out some original goods, not available at other Kiddy Lands.
Each shop has an elaborate display with character illustrations on the walls. It's fun to see the themes of each character's original world.
3 Popular Gifts for Travelers
The Kiddy Land Kyoto Shijo Kawaramachi Shop has a variety of character goods, including stationery, miscellaneous items, figures, and plush dolls. Character plushies and figures are particularly popular with foreign tourists, and make great souvenirs. We asked the shop which were the most popular.
1. Character Figures
The most popular items with foreign shoppers are by and far, the figurines! They are on display towards the back wall of the first floor. Pokemon and Doraemon are the most popular. Some people bulk-buy as many as 3 or 4 of their favorite characters, as souvenirs and for themselves. Some figures are of the same characters with different expressions, and many fans want to purchase them all.
2. Collector's Items
The large figures on the shelves are popular collector's items, not usually sold in stores. Many people come in and find themselves so impressed with what they see, they can't help but want to buy! Items may be expensive, but nonetheless, are irresistible for enthusiasts.
3. Pokemon Plushies and Figures
Other popular items are the Pokémon plush dolls and figures. There are about 50 adorable Pokémon plushies to greet you right at the first floor entrance. There are so many different types! The popular Pikachu and Eevee dolls come in various sizes. Feel free to search for your favorite Pokémon.
These figures are called "Re-Ment," named after the manufacturer, and are popular for their elaborate depiction of characters' worlds. The Pokémon Terrarium Collection shows the world of Pokémon enclosed within a little capsule in the shape of a Pokéball. Just like a real terrarium, you can have fun decorating it into a lively scene featuring your favorite Pokémon.
One of the most popular Re-Ment figures is Pokémon's Eevee & Friends Dreaming Case. These are surprise toys whose contents are unknown until you open the box. There are a total of four kinds. Enjoy your surprise encounters with Eevee, and try to buy each one. If you want to buy them all at once, you canget the "Otona-Kai Box" (3,000 yen), which includes one of each. The case can be opened and closed and even used to store small things.
Store manager Masanori Kotani introduced us to this special Pokémon Monkore collection. This series features old-fashioned characters that are popular with collectors and tourists. Pokémon has so many characters, and the packages are numbered, so it's easy to want to collect them all.
4 Recommended Kyoto Original Souvenirs
The character shops on the 2nd and 3rd floor have many original products. Here are some recommended Kyoto souvenirs and Japanese-style character goods, only available here!
1. Japanese Miffy Goods
The 3rd floor shop, Miffy Style, is full of Miffy goods, including dolls dressed up as ninja. The Ninja Miffy Plush Toy is a limited-edition Miffy item wearing a full-fledged ninja costume! The hiragana scroll in her hand reads "Miffy".
The large plush dolls pictured at the front of the photo are the limited-edition, good-luck Daruma-style Miffy plushies, only available for spring! Also pictured are the Miffy Lucky Daruma Sakura Color (Sall, 2,400 yen), the Miffy Mascot Key Chain (1,800 yen), and the Netsuke Bell (880 yen).
Be sure to also check out the Chirimen (Japanese fabric) accessories, which are limited to the Kyoto store. From the right: Smartphone Pouch (1,300 yen), Gamaguchi Coin Purse (1,000 yen), and Flat Pouch (1,100 yen). These Japanese-style Miffy goods are unique to Japan, practical, and great for every-day use.
2. Matcha Green Tea Koupen-chan
Koupen-chan no Omiseya-san is located on the 3rd floor, and is stacked with Kyoto-limited Koupen-chan goods. For example, the Matcha Green Tea Koupen-chan, which is quite the change from his usual grey color! The calming colors makes for a cute display.
3. Rare Korilakkuma
The Rilakkuma Store on the 2nd floor features a Korilakkuma Tochigi Tochiotome Ambassador Plush (2,200 yen). Here is Korilakkuma as the appointed mascot ambassador of Tochiotome, dressed as a strawberry of Tochigi Prefecture. The strawberry on the head is removable. This limited-edition Rilakkuma product is not sold in other Kiddy Lands!
There are also plenty of non-character goods that make great Japanese souvenirs on the first floor.
4. Kyoto-Themed Goodies
On the first floor, facing Kawaramachi Dori, you can find many other Japan and Kyoto themed goods. T-shirts featuring popular motifs such as maiko and sushi, solar-powered moving maiko are manuki-neko toys, and more. T-shirt sizes run from S to LL. (Given how petite many Japanese people are, you may want to go a size up from normal!)
Also on the 1st floor is the Kyoto Souvenir Corner, which sells popular sweets such as Kit Kats. Packages depict Japanese themes, such as Mount Fuji and sake bottles. Contents are individually wrapped, making them great souvenirs for handing out.
Souvenir Photo Spot
After shopping, make sure to stop by the third floor photo spot, where you can take photos in full costume. All you need is a single same-day purchase receipt from the shop in any amount. Women can wear kimono and men can wear ninja costumes. Use your own camera or smartphone to take photos - as many as you want!
This luxurious women's kimono is called an irouchikake. In the past, it was used as a formal dress for high-ranking women and brides of samurai. They are still popular as Japanese bridal gowns today.
The female staff are experts in kimono dressing, and will help you dress up. It takes about 20 minutes in total, from the clothing change to the end of the shoot. Feel free to take the challenge yourself! You can take beautiful photos with great detail, including a Noh stage in the background, and Japanese parasols.
