Toyako Onsen is located in Toyako Town, southern Hokkaido. Surrounding this hot spring area is Lake Toya, the active volcano Mt. Usu, and the Pacific Ocean.
Just 2 to 3 hours away from Sapporo and New Chitose Airport by bus or train, its convenient location makes it a popular destination for travelers. Read on to learn all you need to know about Toyako Onsen, including general information, access, and the best hot spring inns!
Brief history of Toyako Onsen
Toyako Onsen developed from the hot waters that gushed after an eruption in 1910. To this day, the nearby Mt. Usu continues to erupt at intervals of 20 to 30 years.
According to the history of Abuta Town, the hot spring inn was established in 1917 with the birth of Toyako Onsen, a sodium and calcium-chloride spring.
This ideal, nature-rich location is full of attractions you can only find here, including the Konpira Crater Disaster Remains Walking Trail, which allows you to see the aftermath of Mt. Usu's eruption years later, and Showa Shinzan, which is still active to this day.
