You've probably seen photos of Muhyo Terrace on Instagram without even knowing it. Located in Tomamu Hokkaido, it's famous for its frozen landscapes! When there's just the right amount of water vapor in the air (think fog), and the temperatures are cold enough, ice crystals will grow on trees and other objects outside, making for stunning scenery!
Several areas in Hokkaido are famous for this weather phenomenon, called rime. And from the Muhyo Terrace at Hoshino Resort Tomamu, you can experience mysterious and superb views of rime-covered landscapes.
The Muhyo Terrace is located at the 1088m point of Mt. Tomamu. Here when Tomamu weather conditions are just right, you can enjoy a magical panoramic view: glittering Hokkaido frozen landscapes of white rime on the trees.
Go to the Muhyo Terrace while enjoying a superb view from the Gondola Lift
It takes 13 minutes by the Gondola Lift from the facility at the foot of Mt. Tomamu to reach the Muhyo Terrace, located at the 1088m point.
The view is fantastic from the gondola lift as it rises little by little. You can get an outstanding panorama of trees covered with shining ice in the magnificent Hidaka mountains.
This is surely an unforgettable memory to see the winter wonderland shining with rime.
Tenbou Cafe: Enjoy a superb view of the frozen landscapes - and exclusive Hokkaido foods!
At Tenbou Cafe neighboring the Muhyo Terrace, you can enjoy exclusive foods which are made out of images of rime and snow, such as rime coffee, with white candy craft, and rime chocolate lava cake.
Take a stroll on the 1088m high Cloud Walk!
After getting off the Gondola Lift and enjoying a 200m stroll along the snowy mountain from the Muhyo Terrace, you’ll arrive at the Cloud Walk, which appears to protrude from the mountain.
This is also popular with people who want a thrill as this structure is the same as a suspension bridge. Enjoy walking in the air slowly while seeing a magnificent view of Hokkaido from 1088m above.
Muhyo Terrace at night is like a mystical dream!
The Muhyo Terrace and Cloud Walk are illuminated in the night during a limited time. When lit, the glittering rime caught in the still evening air is like something from a mystical dream.
And if you are lucky, you can see Hokkaido's famous ‘diamond dust,’ which is moisture in the air that freezes and shines.
