Choosing the right transportation can save both time and money when exploring Morioka and the wider Iwate Prefecture in summer.

For long-distance travel, the JR EAST PASS (Tohoku Area) is one of the best options. It offers five consecutive days of unlimited travel on JR trains and Shinkansen services, and often pays for itself with a single round trip between Tokyo and Morioka.

For local sightseeing, renting a car is highly recommended. While central Morioka and major hubs like Ichinoseki are easy to navigate by train, scenic outdoor spots and sprawling venues such as Koiwai Farm, Ark Tategamori, and the rural landscapes of Tono are much easier to access by car.

A practical strategy is to use the JR East Pass to reach a major hub like Morioka Station or Ichinoseki Station, then pick up a rental car for exploring the region's beautiful countryside.

Koiwai Farm Makibaen’s Kenji Miyazawa exhibition turns the Iwate-born author’s literary world into a hands-on attraction. Visitors can experience an escape-game-style activity inspired by The Restaurant of Many Orders, displays that visualize the sound-symbolic language found in Miyazawa’s works, and sensory installations that combine poetry and music. This exhibition began in April and continues all the way through November, meaning it'll still be in full swing during your summer visit, making it the perfect activity for June!

There are also regularly scheduled hands-on activities (fees apply) where you can interact with the farm animals, including horse and sheep feeding (300 yen per cup of food) and horseback riding experiences (1,000 yen per person; height and weight restrictions apply, so please see official website for more information).

This after-dark program at Morioka Zoological Park ZOOMO gives visitors a rare chance to see animals when the zoo is normally closed. The guided route focuses mainly on the satoyama area, where nighttime behavior can be observed up close with staff interpretation. This year it falls on June 20, which coincides with World Giraffe Day, meaning you can also catch the Giraffe Feeding held earlier that day at 1PM!

Because the experience is designed for small groups, participation is limited and advance reservation is required. It's also worth noting that the event will still go on in the event of rainy weather, so guests are asked to check the forecast before attending and prepare their own umbrellas/raincoats.

There are also a number of other animal related events held throughout the summer, including regularly scheduled viewings, and one-time-only events, so be sure to take a look at the site's event page to see if anything else is going on at the time of your visit!

Held at Ark Tategamori in Ichinoseki, the 9th Tategamori Herb Festa is a seasonal farm event all about food and herbs. The event takes place during early summer, when the farm’s herb gardens and lavender are in season, with food stalls, hands-on workshops, lavender picking, and live music planned across the event period. Special programs include flower arranging, rosewater making, yoga events, and a weekend food marche. Visitors entering the paid farm area can also try charcoal-grilled Tategamori Kogen Pork seasoned with herbs.

The Great Morioka Mikoshi Festival began in the first year of the Heisei era to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Morioka’s municipal organization, and it has since become one of the city’s major early-summer street events. After an opening ceremony on the Nakatsugawa riverside, mikoshi from inside and outside the prefecture, festival music floats, and Edo inspired kiyari chant groups parade through the Odori shopping district. The event brings a festival atmosphere into the city center and draws foot traffic into the shopping area with the energy of mikoshi bearers and festival calls.

Chagu Chagu Umakko is one of Iwate’s signature early summer traditions, featuring 80 to 100 colorfully decorated horses walking from Onikoshi Sozen Shrine in Takizawa to Morioka Hachimangu. The name comes from the “chagu chagu” sound of the bells attached to the horses’ colorful harnesses as they move along the route.

The procession covers roughly 14 kilometers and takes about four hours, passing from rural Takizawa into Morioka. The gentle ringing of the horses’ bells has also been selected as one of Japan’s 100 Soundscapes to Preserve, reflecting the event’s prayers of gratitude and good health for the horses that support local farm work.

Morioka Hachimangu Shrine celebrates the midyear purification season with Nagoshi no Oharae, a ritual to cleanse away the impurities of the first half of the year and pray for peace in the months ahead. A large chinowa ring is set up on the grounds, which visitors pass through as part of the purification. One of the highlights of the Morioka Hachimangu observance is the Chinowa Mikoshi, a portable shrine made in the form of the purification ring and carried through the town.

A similar summer purification ritual is also held at Morioka Tenmangu Shrine, held every year on June 25, with rituals at 11:30 AM and 6 PM. Visitors can also receive a small chinowa amulet at the shrine office during the early-summer period.

Shiwa Castle Festa 2026 is held at Shiwa Castle Ancient Park, a reconstructed historic site based on the remains of the ancient fortification built around 1,200 years ago by Sakanoue no Tamuramaro. The park includes reconstructed features such as the South Gate, earthen walls, government-office area, and pit dwellings. The event includes stage performances, food stalls and kitchen cars, special access to the government-office area and information center, a Shiwa Castle exploration activity, and mini programs.

CHAGU CHAGU ROCK FESTIVAL 2026 returns to the outdoor special venue at Tsugawa Mirai-kan Apio in Takizawa for two days of live music. The festival is now in its third year, with the name inspired by Chagu Chagu Umakko, the horse procession held each June between Takizawa and Morioka.

The 2026 lineup includes THE RAMPAGE, Golden Bomber, Do As Infinity, FUNKY MONKEY BΛBY’S, ≠ME, Kyary Pamyu Pamyu, Kroi, yama, Little Glee Monster, .ENDRECHERI., Matsushita Kohei, and other artists across the two days. Festival food is also part of the draw, with vendors from Iwate and other prefectures serving items such as Morioka reimen, Sanriku grilled squid, Akita miso tanpo, beef tongue curry, and Oita Nakatsu karaage.

The National Yabusame Games in Tono turn the traditional art of mounted archery into a competitive sporting event, with riders shooting at targets while galloping along the course. Tono has deep ties to horses, and this event offers a focused way to watch that heritage through a live competition. The morning program includes an opening ceremony, a children’s yabusame demonstration, the main competition, and an awards ceremony.

Iwate Grulla Morioka home matches are an easy way to see the city’s soccer culture up close. Match days at Iwagin Stadium bring supporters together around the pitch, with team colors, chants, stadium food, and pre-match routines making the area feel active well before kickoff. These matches give local supporters a chance to back the club as it competes in the JFL with the aim of returning to the J.League. June’s home fixtures include Round 11 against FC Maruyasu Okazaki and Round 13 against Y.S.C.C. Yokohama at Iwagin Stadium.

This theme exhibition at Morioka History and Culture Museum looks at confectionery in Morioka through materials from the collection. The display introduces sweets eaten by the Nambu family and their retainers during the Edo period, along with objects like confectionery drawings, written records, and wooden molds for dry sweets. It’s a small exhibition, but an interesting stop for visitors interested in sweets and food history.

This collection exhibition at the Morioka Memorial Museum of Great Predecessors focuses on Tomita Koichiro, an educator who taught at what is now Morioka First High School and was involved in the founding of Iwate Prefectural Morioka Commercial High School and Morioka Municipal High School. Held in connection with the 80th anniversary of his death in 2025, the exhibition presents personal items, photographs, and related materials from the museum’s collection.

Iwate Prefectural Museum’s 74th special exhibition looks at how people in Iwate have faced life, aging, illness, and death through prayer, memory, and local belief, and introduces materials from people who were born, lived, and died in Iwate, such as an iron kakebotoke from Raiden Shrine in Kuzumaki. The exhibition period also includes related lectures on themes such as burial and views of the afterlife, Chusonji memorial texts and sokushinbutsu, folk performing arts and prayer, and portraits of the deceased. Workshops and screenings are also scheduled during the event.

Taiwan Festival in Morioka 2026 will be held at Aeon Mall Morioka as the Taiwan Festival series comes to Tohoku for the first time. This year’s theme is Tainan, with lantern displays and food from Taiwan’s old southern capital. The food lineup is still being updated, but the official page lists familiar Taiwanese festival items like da ji pai and xiaolongbao, along with danzai noodles and shrimp rice. The event will also introduce Tainan fruit, reflecting the city’s reputation as one of Taiwan’s major fruit-growing areas.

The July edition of ZOOMO’s Real Night Zoo continues the popular small-group nighttime program from June. Guided by animal keepers, participants use night scopes and infrared cameras to quietly observe selected areas of the park, and see animals when their behavior may differ from what is regularly seen during daytime hours. The limited capacity make this experience a more intimate, quiet option for those looking for something more relaxed to do after dark.

This firefly observation evening is held around the Oirino Wetland Plant Garden area of Gosho Lake Regional Park in early July. Visitors can quietly walk along the wetland paths and watch Genji and Heike fireflies glow near the water, making the event a simple but atmospheric way to experience the preserved natural environment around Gosho Lake. Note that this is not a guided event; guests can arrive at the park and explore at their own pace.

Plaza Odette’s Unagi Festival brings one of Japan’s classic summer food customs to central Morioka ahead of midsummer’s Day of the Ox. Held at Odette Square, the event is centered on grilled unagi kabayaki, with sales beginning from 11 AM. Visitors passing through the Nakanohashi area can drop by for freshly grilled eel and get a taste of the local custom.

The Awashima-Konsei Festival is a distinctive folk ritual held around Morioka Castle Site Park on the Nakanohashi side. This festival honors the deities Awashima and Konsei with prayers for family harmony, fertility, peace, and prosperity. The ceremony includes placement of the mikoshi, Shinto rituals, Takinoshita Sansa, and the maguwai no gi, in which the two mikoshi are joined during the ritual. The castle park setting also makes it a convenient visit that you can easily follow up with a walk around the stone walls, park areas, and the nearby Nakanohashi district.

The Gosho Lake Festival is the main summer festival in the Tsunagi Onsen area, held on the south shores of Gosho Lake. It includes traditional Sansa dance, Tsunagi Mikoshi, taiko drumming, and other stage events before the evening fireworks. The fireworks are launched over the lake, with the Statue of Zion nearby as one of the familiar views of the festival.

This July home match brings Iwate Grulla Morioka supporters to the stadium for summer JFL fixtures against FC Tiamo Hirakata and Asuka FC. With the summer season underway, the matches bring together the physical intensity of the players and the energy of local supporters in the stands. The stadium is easy to get around, even for travelers who are not regular soccer fans, with supporters gathering around the stands and food areas before the match begins.

The Mercury Cup is one of the headline dirt races of Morioka’s summer horse-racing season. Officially listed in 2026 as the 30th Mercury Cup / Meisei Opera Memorial, the race is a JpnIII national exchange race held at Morioka Racecourse over 2,000 meters on dirt, with some of the largest elevation changes among Japanese racecourses, including a 4.4-meter difference and a downhill section from the third corner. For visitors interested in horse racing, this is a great chance to plan a summer racecourse stop in Morioka.

Morioka History and Culture Museum’s summer exhibitions give visitors two views of the Nanbu family, the former lords of Morioka. The main summer exhibition, “Proof of Family: Tracing the Nanbu Clan Through Crests,” looks at the family crests as signs of lineage, rank, and identity, and how they were used on armor, weapons, clothing, furnishings, and other historical materials.

The second exhibit, “Toyotomi and Nanbu,” is a theme exhibition displaying documents related to the Nanbu clan’s ties with Toyotomi Hideyoshi and other daimyo under the Toyotomi government. Together, these two exhibits give a closer look at how the Nanbu family lived through the late Warring States period, and expressed loyalty through visual symbols.

Note: Visitors on July 26 can participate in a hands-on workshop: “Let's make a family crest with cut paper! - Morioka Nanbu Family Edition” from 1:30–3:30 PM (100 yen), where you will use blades to cut intricate designs on special papers to make your own Nambu Family style family crest. Iwate Museum of Art’s summer exhibition is the first major retrospective of Kobayashi Tokusaburo, a Western-style painter born in Fukuyama, Hiroshima. Kobayashi was known for works featuring sardines, horse mackerel, family portraits, and everyday scenes, as well as book illustration, magazine design, and stage decoration. The exhibition presents more than 300 works and related materials, tracing the range of Kobayashi’s career from his early involvement with the Hyūzan-kai art group to the familiar subjects and colors of his later years.

Morioka Children’s Museum of Science offers seasonal astronomy programs for families and young visitors. The Solar Viewing Session is held with the Iwate University Astronomy Club, using solar-shielding plates and telescope projection methods so participants can safely observe the sun and sunspots.
The museum also holds evening Stargazing Sessions, where participants look for constellations and use astronomical telescopes to observe the night sky from the museum parking area.

Fabric Gallery is an irregular exhibition and sales event held inside a historic Nambu magariya farmhouse at Gosho Lake Regional Park’s Sakura Garden. Local makers display textile works such as sakiori weaving, lacework, wool felt, and dyed fabric pieces in the peaceful, traditional building. The thatched-roof Sakura Garden farmhouse can be visited as a rest and information space when open, and is a nice, quiet stop that fits naturally into a drive around Gosho Lake.

Hotel Metropolitan Morioka’s Metro Summer Fest 2026 is a summer restaurant fair held across four restaurants in the hotel’s Main Building and New Wing. The event is designed for summer dinners, casual gatherings, and seasonal outings near Morioka Station, with each restaurant offering its own limited-time menu.

Each restaurant has its own menu: JUEN offers a Chinese course built around Sichuan, Cantonese, Shanghai, and Beijing flavors; Giovanni serves a free-flow garden buffet with grilled dishes and drinks; Tai no Tsuru prepares a Japanese course using Iwate ingredients; and Mon Fleuve serves a French menu inspired by regional dishes from Bordeaux, Brittany, and Languedoc.

Morioka Sansa Odori is the city’s defining summer festival and one of Tohoku’s major festival events. Rooted in the Mitsuishi Shrine’s legend of driving away an evil demon, the festival fills Chuo-dori with dancers, flutes, and taiko drums. The final day includes the “World’s Largest Taiko Drum Parade” that once set a Guinness World Record for simultaneous taiko performance! Visitors can watch from the roadside for free, or buy a paid seating option for guaranteed comfort.

The Tamayama Summer Festival is held in Morioka’s northern Tamayama area, using the local baseball field as its main venue. The program usually includes stage performances, hands-on booths, food stalls, and fireworks at the end of the evening. It is a community festival, smaller in scale compared to other major events, but is worth checking out if you’re exploring the Tamayama area.

Morioka Tanabata Festival is one of the city’s classic August events, held inside the Sakanacho shopping arcade in central Morioka, filled with handmade Tanabata decorations from local shops. The full festival runs from August 4 to 7, with stalls and activities during the main festival days.

Because Sakanacho is close to Nakanohashi, Morioka Bus Center, Plaza Odette, and Morioka Castle Site Park, it’s easy to visit from a Morioka walk. The 2026 schedule has not yet been posted, so check the official Sakanacho page before planning around specific dates.

The Morioka Fireworks Festival is held along the Kitakami River downstream from Tonan Ohashi.and is one of the city’s largest fireworks events. After pre-event stage performances by local groups in the evening, the fireworks display begins at night with more than 10,000 shots, including rapid-fire star mines, creative fireworks, and character-themed fireworks. The combination of river, mountain echoes, and large-scale pyrotechnics makes it one of Morioka’s most dramatic summer night events.

Project 2026 comes to Morioka Civic Cultural Hall with “Fun Orchestra in Iwate: A Dream Stage with the Orchestra and Children.” The project features music, culture, and performing arts activities by children from around the Tohoku region, creating a concert program together with the orchestra. It’s a family-friendly option for those who want a seated, indoor cultural event during the busy August season.

Morioka Racecourse has several major race days across late summer, including the Cluster Cup and the Beautiful Dreamer Cup, giving visitors a chance to see a fast, high-profile race during the Obon period. The Cluster Cup is a JpnIII national exchange sprint over 1,200 meters on dirt. Later in the month, the Beautiful Dreamer Cup is held as an M1 race for fillies and mares over 2,000 meters on dirt. The race is part of GRANDAME-JAPAN and takes its name from Beautiful Dreamer, the important mare imported from Britain by Koiwai Farm in the Meiji period.

Continuing into August, this Morioka History and Culture Museum exhibition gives summer visitors and returning holiday travelers a chance to explore the Nambu clan through the visual language of family crests. The objects on display include armor, weapons, and furnishings marked with carefully designed crests, showing how these crests were used as signs of lineage, rank, and identity. It’s an up-close look at how the Nambu family lived through the late Warring States period, and expressed loyalty through visual symbols.

This large-scale Evangelion exhibition commemorates the 30th anniversary of the landmark anime franchise and brings the event to the Tohoku region. The display includes original production drawings, color setting materials, and three-dimensional exhibits that show how the series’ visual world was created. For anime fans and visitors interested in contemporary Japanese pop culture, the exhibition adds a modern cultural draw to Morioka’s summer museum and event lineup.

Tono Municipal Museum’s summer special exhibition focuses on Oshirasama, paired sacred figures traditionally made from materials such as mulberry wood. Oshirasama have been worshipped as sacred objects connected to households, sericulture, and local beliefs and traditions in the Tono region.

The display also draws on the story of sericulture’s origins in Yanagita Kunio’s Tono Monogatari. Colorful Oshirasama figures, clothing, and related materials show how prayer, household life, and local storytelling have remained part of Tono’s cultural memory. The museum’s permanent exhibits on Tono Monogatari make this a good stop for visitors interested in folklore, folk religion, and the stories associated with the Tono region.

From early summer rituals and family programs to August’s major festival nights, Morioka has plenty happening beyond the usual sightseeing route. The season moves between shrines, museums, parks, stadiums, and riverside venues, giving visitors lost of ways to experience the city outside the typical landmarks offered in guidebooks.
