Odaiba Oedo Onsen Monogatari is an entertainment facility perfect for a day trip in Tokyo!

Odaiba Oedo Onsen opened in Rinkai-Fukutoshin, Odaiba, in 2003, about 400 years since the Edo period. It is a unique space, a reproduction of Edo's streets in the form of a hot-spring theme park, in which you can enjoy not just a bathing day-trip but also foot baths, rock salt saunas, and even various foods.

They even sometimes hold exciting events such as a recently held TV animation collaboration, in which they held exhibitions and stamp rally games featuring the characters in the halls.

You can use the Odaiba Oedo Onsen Monogatari from 11:00 a.m. until 9:00 a.m. the next morning, and all kinds of people – families, couples, friends, and foreign tourists – are welcome to visit.

There are two access routes, the Yurikamome Line and the Rinkai Line, as well as a free shuttle bus that runs daily.

▲ Free shuttle bus. There are 5 buses to Odaiba Oedo Onsen that depart from the following stations: Tokyo Station, Shinagawa Station, Shinjuku Station, Tokyo Teleport Station, and the Kinshicho/Koto area.

1. Into the bath! Girls Get to Select an Adorable Patterned Yukata

When you enter you will receive your “transit pass” at the front, which is a wristband with a unique barcode. With this, you will not even need to bring your wallet to buy food and drink in the facilities. It will be calculated in the end so you can pay before you leave.

Admission is ¥2,280 for adults on weekdays and ¥2,480 on Saturdays and Sundays. Fee will be ¥2,580 on other specified days. (Admission price may vary after 6:00 p.m..).

Once you enter, head to Echigoya, which is located beside the reception area, where you can select the yukata to wear in the halls. There are four types of mens' and five types of womens' yukata patterns you can choose from, as well as four different colors of sashes for both men and women, black, indigo, mustard, or vermillion.

Just knowing that you could choose a yukata according to your own style and taste made my fashionable soul really excited to try them on. Each pattern was so cute, it was hard to choose just one. I had to take some time trying them on and had to keep asking my friend, "Which one?!"

After finally selecting my favorite yukata, I headed to the changing room. I changed into my yukata, and was ready to go forward! Once I passed through the curtains in the back of the changing room, I was transported to the streets of Edo.

The lively festival-like aspects of this place were very exciting! I tried to contain myself and headed to the bath first.

2. Natural Hot Springs from 1400 meters Underground!

There are 13 types of baths in total for men and women combined.

In the large public bath (11:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. the next day) are the Oedo Onsen, the 100 people bath, the lay-down bath, the lukewarm bath (women only), the sauna (löyly sauna - 11:00 a.m.. to 8:00 a.m. the next day, women only), and the cold bath.

The open-air bath (11:00 a.m. - midnight; 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 a.m. the following day on Fridays, Saturdays, and days before holidays; mornings 5:00 a.m. - 8:00 a.m.) includes a large and small outdoor bath, and barrel baths.

▲ You can really feel the charm of the Oedo Onsen in the wooden-roof bathtub (aka the Golden Hot Spring). You can even see a magnificent view of the red Mt. Fuji and the surrounding scenery through the window as you relax in the tub.

When I first entered the large public bath, I was surprised at the ceiling's height, decorated with a painting of red Mt. Fuji. There were so many baths in this spacious bath area... so I fully expected to be able to enjoy a whole variety of baths!

I decided to enter the Oedo Onsen large public bath first. This bath pumps its water from 1400 meters underground, a weak alkaline, sodium-chloride strong natural hot spring, so you can imagine how hot it is. The water is a brownish color earning it the nickname "the golden hot spring," and is silky to the touch. I could gradually feel myself warming up to the core of my body. After a quick break following this bath, I would enter a different bath.

I continued to the outdoor bath. In addition to the large and small baths, and the women's open-air bath, were also barrel-style baths. You definitely forget that you are in the city when you're here!

After that, we headed to the low-temperature, high-humidity mist sauna (mist bath). Because of all the variety of baths at Odaiba Oedo Onsen Monogatari, it is recommended to enjoy them all slowly, and be careful of overheating yourself.

3. Leisurely Footbathe! Let the Bumpy Ground of the Hot Spring Relax You in the Japanese Garden

My next experience was with the foot bath (11:00 a.m. - midnight), located in the vast Japanese garden of 700 tsubo (about 2,314m), which was also open to men and families.

The Odaiba Oedo Onsen footbath is a hot water path based on the relay stations of the Edo period's 53 Stations of the Tokaido. It is 50 meters long!

▲ I walked the 50 meter hot spring road. The pebbles on the ground really stimulate the soles of the feet - it was a good kind of pain!

It was easy to forget the passing of time while relaxing in the warmth and the nature. It is definitely a spot you will want to visit, where you can casually enjoy your trip while wearing a yukata.

At the end of the hot spring road is the "fish healing" area, where you can experience fish therapy (separate fee, please check website for up to date information).

This is where little doctor fish will nip away at the old dried skin of your feet and also cleanse your skin. You can expect to feel a slippery sensation on your soles, which also feels like a comfortable massage.

4. From Authentic Cuisine to Stalls and Sweets... Enjoy a Wide Variety of Gourmet Foods!

When you get hungry, you will want to head to the main street Hirokoji and Happyaku-yacho, or the "800 Towns" food stall village in the atrium space. You can enjoy authentic Japanese restaurants, including sushi and Korean food, as well as izakaya and stalls that sell takoyaki, ramen, rice bowls, and sweets.

You can eat and drink in the shop or sit out in the open space of the food court. It is a great way to be able to enjoy a variety of foods!

Today, I enjoyed a relaxing drink after my bath at Kawacho, a place well known for their fresh seasonal Japanese foods and their signature fresh tofu dishes. (Weekdays 11:00 a.m.. - 10:00 p.m.; Saturdays, Sundays and holidays 11:00 a.m.. - 11:00 p.m.)

There are plenty of sweets shops in Hirokoji and Happyaku-Yacho. Allow me to introduce a few.

Craving fresh fruit juice? My recommendation is "Yume Akari" (Weekend, Saturdays, Sundays, Holidays 11:00 a.m. - 10:20 p.m.). One of the most popular menu items, especially amongst women, is the Cajyutta grapefruit and orange juice. It is freshly squeezed and a good way to replace vitamins after sweating in the baths.

At "Kita no Watayuki" (weekdays 11:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m., Saturdays, Sundays, Holidays 11:00 a.m. - 9:30 p.m.), you can enjoy some fluffy shaved ice. Even though it is shaved ice, many are pleasantly surprised by how fluffy and smooth it feels, like snow. The base is actually called "ice cotton snow." The ice itself is flavored and comes in 6 different types, white milk, strawberry, green tea, mango, banana, and ramune. You can top it with fruit sauces and fruit pulps.

Today I tried the strawberry milk ice, which was topped with strawberry sauce and fruit. The strawberry-flavored ice base is very popular with women. The fluffy snow-like ice melts gently on the tongue as the milk spreads in your mouth, a delicious texture and flavor of shaved ice and milk!

There was even "Marion Crepe," a popular crepe shop originating from Harajuku Takeshita Street (Weekdays, Saturdays, Sundays, Holidays 11:00 a.m. - 11:00 p.m.), so I had to check it out. Along with the standard crepe menu, they also had a limited edition Odaiba Oedo Onsen Special Menu! I tried one right away!

5. Fun and Nostalgic! Let Your Inner Child Enjoy the Atmosphere of the Arcade

In Hirokoji, you can enjoy not just delicious food but fun games and attractions that are exciting whether you are an adult or a child. Shuriken throwing, ninja arrows, tama-korogashi (ball rolling), katanuki (ball scooping), nostalgic candy shops, and more!

While we were at it, I decided to challenge the super ball scoop and shuriken throwing, games that I can't usually play.

▲ "Shuriken Throwing" (¥400+tax per game) uses authentic shuriken made of iron. You can throw up to seven times (2 practice throws, 5 regular throws). Before we began, the staff explained to us how to throw correctly.

Playing these games really brought me back to my childhood. Even if you do not actually play, it is fun just walking around and checking out all the various shops!

6. Clear Body and Mind! Healing Bedrock and Relaxing Areas

In Odaiba Oedo Onsen, after spending time in the baths, it is recommended to spend some healing time afterwards. Their relaxation options include exfoliation, body care, foot massage, facials, and more.

Next I experienced the Rock Salt Baths (11:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m., ¥1,200+tax), which was reopened on July 14, 2017. The space is decorated in the theme of the four seasons, and there are two kinds of bedrock which you can enjoy with no time limit.

In the rock bath "summer room" is a romantic space decorated with a glittering starry sky and drawings of the Tanabata characters Orihime and Hikoboshi on the walls. It was really relaxing to lie there sweating and detoxing while gazing up at the starry night sky!

▲The starry sky is shown during the summer. If you are lucky, you may even be able to spot a shooting star?!

You can sit or lie down on the rock salt bath in the "autumn room" where there is a space with floor heating installed. Steam is generated from the center open-air fire, promoting sweat, and because it is wide enough to stretch out on, you can stretch your body and relax even further.

In the hall there is also a break area where you can even take a nap after a bath or eating, and another large hall for just relaxing and hanging out. This area is ladies only, so you can feel comfortable to just rest and relax.

7. Accommodations? Break time? How to Spend Time in Luxury Private Spaces at Iseya Inn

For those of you who can't get enough and want to do a little more, I recommend the accommodation facility Iseya Inn, where you can use tastefully-selected Japanese style modern rooms. There are 7 types of room, including special rooms, Japanese style rooms, and Western-style rooms that include outdoor baths.

I did not stay at the facilities this time; however, for those who just want to take a break, you can also stay here from 12:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. It's another great way to have a luxurious break time in your own private space for a while. (Reservations required, see homepage for details.)
