What is Kawazu-zakura?

Kawazu-zakura, also known as Kawazu cherry blossoms, is a unique variety of cherry blossom that blooms in early spring in Japan. It is named after the town of Kawazu in the Izu Peninsula, Shizuoka Prefecture, where it was first cultivated.
One of the most notable characteristics of Kawazu-zakura is its early blooming period. While most cherry blossoms bloom in late March or early April, Kawazu-zakura starts blooming as early as February. This makes it one of the first signs of spring in Japan and a popular attraction for both locals and tourists.
Another unique characteristic of Kawazu-zakura is its vibrant pink color. The flowers are somewhat larger than other cherry blossom varieties and have a deep pink hue that stands out against the spring landscape. The petals are also slightly more elongated, giving the blossoms a distinct appearance.
The history and significance of Kawazu-zakura date back to the early 1950s, when a wild-growing tree was discovered and then transplanted to the residence of Sukenobu Ide in Kawazu, and the original tree can still be viewed today. It was subsequently developed to promote tourism in the town and has since become a symbol of early spring in Japan.
Kawazu Sakura Forecast 2025
In 2024, the Kawazu-zakura reached peak bloom around February 19. In 2025, they can be expected to reach peak bloom around that date and last until early March. Below is a live camera feed so you can confirm the situation before your visit.
Kawazu Cherry Blossom Festival (Feb 1-28): A Celebration of Beauty

The annual Kawazu-zakura Festival (February 1-28 in 2025) attracts around 1 million visitors who come to admire the breathtaking beauty of these cherry blossoms. There are around 8,000 trees that come into bloom in the Kawazu area, with some 850 lining the Kawazu River banks over a stretch of around 4 kilometers.
One of the highlights of the Kawazu-zakura Festival is the mesmerizing display of cherry blossoms along the Kawazu River. As the cherry trees bloom in early February, the riverbanks are transformed into a picturesque scene with vibrant pink flowers cascading down the slopes.
Strolling along the river, visitors can immerse themselves in the delicate fragrance and marvel at the breathtaking sight. Certain areas are lit up in the evening from 6 PM to 9 PM.
- Reserve train seats both to and from Kawazu so you aren't standing the whole trip. (Especially recommended for families!) You can change times via the web or ticket office later on.
- Given the large crowds, be sure to take bathroom breaks before you really need them.

No festival is complete without delicious food, and the Kawazu-zakura Festival offers a range of sakura-themed treats to indulge in. From cherry blossom-flavored ice cream and snacks to sakura-infused drinks, there are plenty of culinary delights to satisfy your taste buds.

Don't miss the opportunity to try sakura mochi, a traditional Japanese sweet made with sweet rice and wrapped in a cherry blossom leaf. It's a delightful treat that perfectly captures the essence of the festival.
Additionally, The Izu Kyu Beer Train offers a unique way to enjoy the stunning Kawazu cherry blossoms. On this train, passengers can enjoy local craft beer and delicious snacks while taking in the scenic views along the Izu Peninsula.
Best Places to See Kawazu-zakura

When it comes to viewing Kawazu-zakura, there are two especially recommended areas that offer a delightful experience.

The first is the original Kawazu-zakura Tree, still located in front of the former residence of Sukenobu Ide. Since this is located on private land, be sure to be respectful when visiting.

Along the banks of the Kawazu River, and even from the riverbed itself, you'll find wonderful photo spots all the way up to Mine Onsen.
Planning Your Trip to See Kawazu-zakura in 2025

Capturing the Beauty of Kawazu-zakura

When it comes to capturing the beauty of Kawazu-zakura, photography plays a crucial role in immortalizing the delicate blossoms. Whether you're a professional photographer or an amateur enthusiast, here are some tips to help you capture stunning sakura photos.
First and foremost, the right equipment can make a significant difference in the quality of your sakura photography. While a DSLR camera with interchangeable lenses is ideal, you can still achieve great results with a high-quality smartphone camera. Just make sure to clean the lens and adjust the settings for optimal performance.
Now, let's talk about angles and perspectives. Experimenting with different angles can give your photos a unique touch. Try shooting from low angles to capture the sakura blossoms against the sky, or get up close for detailed shots of individual flowers. Additionally, shooting from below the sakura tree canopy can create a dreamy effect.
Lighting is another essential aspect to consider. Soft, diffused light, such as during the golden hours of sunrise or sunset, can enhance the beauty of Kawazu-zakura. Avoid harsh midday sunlight, as it can create unwanted shadows and wash out the colors of the blossoms.
Composition is key in sakura photography. Consider incorporating other elements into your shots, such as architecture or scenic landscapes, to add depth and context to your photos.

Other flowers will be in bloom, such as yellow canola and even plum blossoms, which can provide a lovely contrast to the pink cherry flowers. Don't be afraid to experiment with different compositions and framing techniques to create visually compelling images.

Lastly, patience is essential when photographing Kawazu-zakura. Take your time to observe the surroundings, wait for the perfect moment, and be mindful of the weather conditions. Remember, the beauty of these blossoms lies not only in their appearance but also in the emotions they evoke.
