Southern Kanagawa Prefecture's Miura Peninsula, located quite near Tokyo, is surrounded by mountains, seas, and an abundance of nature. The seaside towns on the Peninsula have developed a unique history and culture, not to mention delectable food.
This is a perfect destination for a day trip from Tokyo, and we're here to give you the lowdown about its geography and how you can get there from the metropolitan area.
Where is the Miura Peninsula?
Miura Peninsula is a peninsula jutting out of Kanagawa's south-eastern parts. This seaside town area is surrounded by the seas of Sagami Bay and Tokyo Bay. Five towns are collectively called the Miura Peninsula territory, and they are Kamakura, Yokosuka, Zushi, Miura, and Hayama.
The area is perfect for travelers hoping to enjoy the natural seas and mountains of Kanagawa Prefecture. We'll be taking a look at the following three scenic areas that you can reach in about an hour by train from Tokyo.
Miura Hot Spot 1: Zushi / Hayama
The Hayama Imperial Villa here is still being used by the royal family, and there are quite a number of villas belonging to famous people here as well. Zushi and Hayama are popular resort areas for travelers wanting to enjoy a peaceful vibe that's still somewhat near the heart of a bustling city.
The Zushi Marina and Hayama Marina are harbors with rows upon rows of parked leisure yachts. During summer, Morito Beach and Isshiki Beach become crowded with people wanting to swim in the sea. The fancy cafes and restaurants offering impressive ocean views here are perfect for those wishing to simply pass time at leisure.
Zushi can be accessed from Zushi Station on the JR Line, or Shin-Zushi Station on the Keikyu Line. Hayama can be accessed by taking a bus from either stations.
(Shin-Zushi Station will be renamed into Zushi/Hayama Station from 20 March, 2020.)
Miura Hot Spot 2: Yokosuka
Ever since the arrival of the Commodore Perry's black ships that forced a formerly isolationist Japan to open up to the world, Yokosuka has flourished as a naval port and you can still see traces of the United States and its navy around town nowadays. The town has developed an exotic atmosphere and unique culture of its own as well. With places of interest such as Sarushima Island, the largest uninhabited island in Tokyo Bay that was used by the former Imperial Japanese army as a fortress, and Dobuita Street, an area that gives off American vibes and is also known as Curry Street, you can be sure your cravings for scenic sights and delicious food can both be satisfied at the same time here.
If you wish to tour around Yokosuka, use the Yokosuka-chuo Station on the Keikyu Line as base.
Miura Hot Spot 3: Miura / Misaki
The southernmost area of the peninsula is the Miura / Misaki area. Misaki Port is well-known for its plentiful tuna harvesting spots, and needless to mention, this fish is one of the many delicacies being offered on the peninsula.
Kanagawa's largest remote island, Jōgashima, was featured in the Michelin Green Guide Japan, which saw it garnering a lot of interest among foreigners. Now, it is a popular destination for visitors. This is also where you'll find the primitive Koajiro no Mori, the only place in Kanto where there is a continuous stretch of untouched forests, swamps, and tidelands leading into the sea. It is a charming area where you can fully relish the sights and sounds of the natural environment without distraction.

Plan your mode of transportation around the place you wish to visit
Since Miura Peninsula is a rather big place, you may want to decide on one particular area to visit first of all, and then work your plans around that destination.
Why not research on and see if there are special tickets that come as a set with souvenirs, or a train/bus/food pass that allows access to all three areas? With a pass, you'll be able to reach places of interest that are a little farther from the station without having to worry about unexpected transportation costs.
It's little conveniences like these that make your trip much more pleasant and enjoyable, so be sure to make full use of set discounts and passes if you find any!
